The mechanics haven't changed that much since the PS2 days and the combat system is basically the same. It's a bit more boring (or rather "normal") since the series gradually went more and more over the top, but if you love 0 and you're planning on playing all parts, it's essential.

Holy crap what a fantastic game 5 was. Not sure which is my favourite 0 or 5.
It had a few asspulls, but the story was massively engaging and kept me hooked and could be pretty emotional at points.

I would gladly but I never played 5 and my PS3 is dead, so I am waiting for the 5 remaster on PS4.

None of 3, 4 or 5 remasters are confirmed for U.S. or UK yet. But there's been a good track record lately so I'd say it's pretty likely they will come over.

Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi recently revealed that his franchise was originally pitched to Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. Though Sony warmed up to Yakuza, both Microsoft and Nintendo remained firmly against publishing the game on their console platforms.

In an interview with Edge magazine (via ResetEra), Nagoshi admitted that even Sega was against Yakuza at the start.

"...I abandoned the idea of selling worldwide," he said. "Next, I decided I wouldn't mind if female players didn't like the game; then that no children were allowed. When I decided all that, the only target left was the Japanese male."

Of course, now that the Yakuza franchise has received critical acclaim--and even found worldwide commercial success with recent releases in the West--both Microsoft and Nintendo want in. "Back then they said, 'No we don't want it.' Now they say, 'We want it!'" Nagoshi said. "They didn't understand the reason why I created it."

Tried liking this but after like 12h eventualy quit it, i was bored out of my mind really.. the main plot is well done with nice cutscenes but at this point its not rly a game when u spend like 1h watching these.. rather watch something truly great in movie format tbh, and the sidequests bored the hell out of me, they are not voiced so its like reading boxes of text and pressing X every now and then, the mini games seem like padding to make this game seem bigger and open world and they are gimmicky after you try them once, but i guess im in the minority, ppl praise this game ..a LOT

As a huge fan of shenmue i had to give it a try but it seems they are very and i mean very diferent beasts

I think ppl that love this have not seen many takeshi gangster movies.. they are all high quality and much better options when it comes to watching a japanese crime drama, the combat in this is also rly boring, its always the same thing over and over..

I love both Takeshi movies and Yakuza games, so your statement is wrong.
These are 2 different mediums, and I have different expectations of storytelling in a game vs a movie with good actors.

Got with the series finally, played most of them, some to about half way and only Yakuza 6 to the end.
I like the series, Y0 probably has the best cast of characters, both good and evil. But my favourite one is Y6, really liked everything about the game, it's the only game in series to have all quests fully voiced iirc, that's a huge plus, the Hiroshima map is nice, the conclusion of Kiryu and Haruka was satisfying, and the end was perfect.

I played about half of LaD and exploring was cool, combat was meh, a shame they gone this road, like every 2 meter there's a group of enemies.
one minor(not to me!) added with this game was not needing to hold the run button! thanks heavens! so simple yet so much more easy and comfortable for a game you run around the city 90% of the time.

Judgment was nice game but sadly no Yakuza, Yagami is nice but man is outfit is blah, Kiryu is so much better, but not only this.. the only cool antagonist is basically Hamura, previous Yakuza games had many more great and cool characters.
also someone thought that having a none rotating mini map and no option to change it was a good idea ffs, can't remember in my life where this happened.

Now playing Lost Judgement, it's a clear improvement over Judgement no doubt, the gameplay, exploring, combat and graphics are all better, still i know this is no yakuza but man the antagonist in the Yakuza series are so much cooler, anyway it's still a good game and the main story keeps me interested, tho i wasted too many hours on school activities. It's one of my pet hates, cannot stand that. Who in their right minds would use, for example, a sat-nav with a layout like that? I know some people don't mind it in games but Christ, just give people the option.Dragon Quest XI was the only other recent game that I can remember playing that forced that design choice on me.
