The second I rot with a ROT13 cipher, a simple letter substitution cipher.

It's very easy to create your own encryption scheme without using any modern encryption standards with insane math and security features.

Simple example that could be :

Binary file to be encrypted: "This is a secret message that can only be decrypted with the correct password".

Password: "This is the secret key" (the ascii values for each character are stored to be used for the next section, the number of characters used can be arbitrary)

Read first ASCII value of the password as byte A = $54
Read first byte in the binary file, byte B = $54
Add A with B which equals C (A+B=C). C = $A8.
Store byte to RAM.
Repeat this for every byte, restarting A from first position when reaching the last character until the entire binary file has been "transposed" by the hex values from the password string. Make sure the bytes are treated as unsigned and don't use the carry flag (depending on CPU etc.).

Next you can create a simple logic key from the password and use logic operands on the first-step encrypted version of the binary that you have in RAM. Use that key to shift/and/or/not (and store the carry result as well) the data to make it less obvious what this ultra-simple algorithm is doing.

Then add whatever obfuscation steps you want.

The weakness? Obviously there's no advanced encryption going on here, it's a simple clear-text encryption/decryption algorithm from the days before pgp and other smarter encyption formats.

If someone disassembled the code they'd easily see how it worked within 10 minutes which would make it easier to decode encrypted binary files without the password sentence although it would still take time (esp. on 80'ies CPU's) since brute force would be the only alternative when the unknown password can contain an arbitrary number of letters, symbols and numbers.

This was just an example of how the simplest of algorithms could be used to block the average user from being able to find out what a certain binary file actually contains.

I guess this is like the first chapter in "Encryption for Dummies". Laughing
It may help non-coders to understand a little about beginners low-level encryption "design".
