https://kotaku.com/square-enix-embracer-deus-ex-1848866849
From Kotaku:
The Embracer Group, a planet-swallowing mass of video game publishers that already includes the likes of Gearbox and THQ Nordic, tonight announced a deal to purchase a number of storied studios and properties from Square Enix.
While the purchase isn’t final—this is just “an agreement to acquire” them until everything is signed off later in the year—the announcement press release says that if approved it will be a USD$300 million deal. For the $300 mil, Embracer will get hold of:
The studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal (the latter of which will presumably be in for a name change), numbering around 1100 employees worldwide.
The “catalogue of IPs” owned and/or worked on by those studios, including Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Thief, Legacy of Kain and “the continued sales and operations of the studios’ more than 50 back-catalogue games”. Also of interest: “Crystal Dynamics is actively working on several AAA projects, including the next mainline Tomb Raider game that will deliver next-generation storytelling and gameplay experiences.”
Perhaps knowing that the first question most folks would have following a deal like this would be “so what’s happening with those series?”, Embracer’s press release says:
The acquisition brings a compelling pipeline of new installments from beloved franchises and original IPs, including a new Tomb Raider game. The acquisition builds on Embracer’s mission of creating a leading independent global gaming and entertainment ecosystem. Embracer has been particularly impressed by the studios’ rich portfolio of original IP, housing brands with proven global potential such as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, as well as demonstrating the ability to create AAA games with large and growing fan bases. There are compelling opportunities to organically grow the studios to maximize their commercial opportunities.
Note that Embracer spent $1.3 billion just on Gearbox. To get all of this, from the experienced studios to the beloved properties for $1 billion less seems...like a steal.
So why sell? Square Enix’s own press release says:
The Transaction will assist the Company in adapting to the changes underway in the global business environment by establishing a more efficient allocation of resources, which will enhance corporate value by accelerating growth in the Company’s core businesses in the digital entertainment domain. In addition, the Transaction enables the launch of new businesses by moving forward with investments in fields including blockchain, AI, and the cloud.

Hard to say what they might do with the franchise though, just look at what is happening with their Saints Row reboot. It is still surprising that Square Enix would firesale these IPs and studios so cheap as you would think someone like Microsoft or Sony would have paid $300 million just for the IPs alone.
Randy Pitchford must really be a smooth talker to get $1.3 Billion for Gearbox when Square Enix could only get $300 million for these 3 studios and IPs.

looking at the timing , Embracer did sneak out with the deal right at the perfect time when MS goes trhough approval procedure of ActiBliz .. so they probably werent able to bid.
As for Gearbox vs former Eidos here ..... its quite easy, gearbox deal was officially marked as merger and no sale .. so that changes things a bit.
But the main difference is easy , GEarbox has own publishing division with few successfull titles aswell as their own IP thats quite alive .... CD/EM on other hand has ben mismanaged under Square for decade and come after two huge commercial failures (GoTG, Avengers) with wealth of classic but preety much dead IPs

I don't think it means too much outside a chance for new Thief and DeusEx, new Tombraider is deep into development. Yeah I only really liked the original Deus Ex, Thief could be a big franchise in the right hands, Tomb Raider i hope goes in a new direction.

If they bought them, they'll use them.
I enjoyed the new tomb Raider games. Story not so much, but gameplay was as good if not better than uncharted series in my opinion. I enjoyed it more.

I guess have no idea what gamers want but Square seem to be failing almost all their franchises and IP. They lost a 100 million on some superhero mmo recently no one played. looking at their site / games:
Forspoken - looks bad
Outriders - tried it, too much grind 2h refund.
Recent dragon quest - meh
Babylons fall - god no.
Chaos Chaos - no.
Octopath Rraveller - looks alright but a low budget game.
Nier - yep decent game.
FF7 remake - should be a slam dunk, but they devided their fan base for whatever reason.
Star Ocean (in dev) - yeah okay but was never that big a series.
And of all these games about 5 of them feature virtually the same gameplay, I also find the IP arguably similar like forspoken, chaos, ff7 a new star ocean etc, the same anime fantasy world they like to create. I'd arguably Tomb Raider was one of the most solid franchises they had and they just sold it. They have these massively popular franchises sitting there like chrono trigger, xenogears, thief, deus ex, parasite eve (like resident evil isn't popular?), they own other decent classic stuff too.

i personally believe the FF7R crap development is to set up grand finales for each installation and not have them end in simple "to be continued". Fight against fate will always be retarded as fate is but a concept, but whatever floats peoples boats. Most god like final bosses in jrpgs are retarded and feel shoe horned in a already grounded story
And DQ11 is fantastic

What I'd like to see: a proper conclusion to Adam Jensen's saga, a new Thief that doesn't smell like taffers' poo, new Legacy of Kain and Tomb Raider titles that aren't cinedurrmatic carousels
Reality: probably more disappointments, wasted opportunities, half-arsed attempts and remustards as per tradition these days. A man can still hope though..

You either make a game for the casual masses or for extreme gamers, never in between. Square seems to be making games for the inbetween, adding monetization and gamifying the games. Gamifying is good for non game products. Not games themselves. If you make f2p you can make monies, nobody wants to shell 60 dollaroos for a f2p game and majority of their shit is f2p mechanics in a big budget game. It's fucking stupid.
If they could make a 60 dollar f2p deus ex with cooldown abilities, and p2w mechanics they most certainly would. And the game would bomb, blaming a dying franchise not greed. Ubi has gone down same path as well. They see f2p making monies, so let's make a AAA game and make it f2p for 60 Buckaroos. Nobody is gonna complain it's a solid franchise, yop.
At the hands of a competent non greed incentivized studio any dead franchise can come back. Gamers hate being treated as cattle.

50 million is pocket change in today's world. |
Does it mean that the next TR games will be AA/cheap games ? Cuz I think DS3 was kinda low budget indeed... Scary if you ask me if they don't put good money on TR games. |
I dont think they're gonna be exactly cheap, its been a fair number of years since the owner made that claim ($50 million is ridiculous, i cant afford that), but i doubt very much that any new game will get the frankly ridiculous amounts of money these games got.
Reading about Shadow of Tomb Raider:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and other different AAA single-player games, cost $75 million to $100 million," Anfossi admits. "And that's production only; it's close to $35 million on the promotion.
So you have Shadow of the TR, a four year old game that on the high end cost 135 million dollars. Looking at the recent Guardians, i'd easily put 150 million at the low end in total. We're not gonna get anywhere close to these figures from Embracer, and these are 4 year old figures.
Honestly, i wish Microsoft would have bought them. Unlike the sony shits, we would have gotten every game ever day one. When they bought Inxile, Fargo said microsoft handed them a pig pile of cash and told them to do the best game that they can. Also, they moved them here:
https://www.gamereactor.eu/check-out-the-new-hq-for-inxile-entertainment/
Double Fine said how they had to cut content from Psychonauts 2 and after they went to microsoft they could make the game they actually wanted. Microsoft are cool with their studios now. And there would have been no concern of cheapness for future games. Imagine waiting 10 years for a new Deus Ex and to get some neutered game where you can tell they didnt have enough money

damn square .. kinda mixed feelings about this.
squaresoft was a cool company until they changed to square enix...
their decline started pretty early.
Lets just remember their DLC preorder backlash from Deus Ex Human revolution. Then their FF13 trilogy fiasko and well FF15 didnt do that well either besides the fact that their remasters are subpar. They heavily invested in the mobile industry mobius ff, ff brave exvius etc. but well didnt have turned out that well i guess. Now going all epic exclusive with ff7 remake, stranger of paradise, kingdom hearts for the exclusivity money? (Not to mention the 3d render cinema movies that are generally not well received)
Maybe the franchises they sold got saved instead of trashed since their plan is to heavily go in on nfts etc. Maybe the games that got released till now are the last proper ones by them..

Thats my problem with it, I enjoyed the first maybe second reboot - but its a flat out uncharted clone (not that i played uncharted) with a lara croft model. They threw away anything unique about the franchise in terms of gameplay..
I actually like skill based gameplay jumping, swinging, exploring... i.e tomb raiding. I can play Rambo in 100 other games, i can open world collect bullshit 1000000x games as well.

hmm , that would make thinghs interesting as , Embracer already owns Titan Quest and Sacred IPs would be cool if they continued at least one of them
i guess biggest chance atm has Titan Quest (given they made 3 new DLCs for it recently)
