Seems like it's a Guybrush kicking another Guybrush off the cliff at the end ? As some commenters have pointed out, there could be time travelling shenanigans with multiple characters to play (much like Maniac Mansion and Thimbleweed Park, more recently).
It's a bit of recurring mechanic for Gilbert at this point..
PS : It's a shame it's not coming out this summer, my fondest gaming memory ever is playing 1&2 throughout the summer holidays (instead of enjoying the sun and stuff  ), discovering this new iteration during the summer would have been peak nostlagia for me  |
So hold off on playing it until next year summer. The deunovo should be cracked by then, men.

I'm not really a fan of the style either, however Gilbert/Terrible Toybox did a great job with Thimbleweed Park in terms of old-school mechanics and charm so I still have some hope (kind of)...unless the fearsome three-headed monster of streamlinization and howdoyoudofellowkids-like humour joins the party, that is.

I wonder if adults had this much to complain when Monkey Island 2 or 3 came out
I know I would have loved this as a kid - unless ofc it's just generally bad.
Does everyone just grow up to be cynic?

Yes, you didn't have social media to see it then but the forums/message boards were full of it. The change of art style from 2 to 3 was and still is divisive to this day.
1 and 2 are still amazing. |

i kind of like it tbh... i mean lets be honest, no artistic direction in 2022 will ever come close to what we have in our heads (and hearts <3) of how monkey island 1-2 looked like when we first played it on our x386 pcs
haven't played any monkey island game after the first ones, but this one i will try

Same thinking here - I was similarly surprised to see how different Guybrush looked in CMI (beardless, no jaw, not the same hair colour/cut, more basic clothes) and people back then were fairly pissed off about it - imo partially because they grew older and couldn't stand the cartoon artstyle. I was still a kid back then which might have influenced my opinion, but it was a brillant transition to me, and it fit the chill Caribbean vibe of the game perfectly to me !
This new style might end up growing up on me too, it does look better in action.

That blog was pretty much pristine and a very good place for conversations on adventure games' design before the reveal. It suddenly devolved into "DONT MAKE IT LEFTIST SJW WOKE SHIT, ELSE" "ART IS SHIT KILL YOURSELF" in a matter of 24 hours. I can understand the bitterness even tho I'd personally just ignore/remove that crap.

The problem here is that the valid criticisms are now all clumped with the "OMG WTFBBQ" clowns. These morons need to learn to criticize the art, not the creator.

), they want cleverly designed games - at least people susceptible of purchasing the game to begin with. Catering to an audience which is not interested in those kinda games is stupid as hell. Regardless, Monkey Island games excelled in providing subtle (or not so subtle) clues to lead you, what else do you need ? They weren't even super difficult games to begin with compared to the likes of Myst.
Don't like the art style either though, the characters' faces look so emotionless.
