The bottom 10 nations in the survey, beginning with the last, were the eastern portion of Germany, Latvia, Sweden, Slovakia, Poland, the western portion of Germany, Taiwan, France, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.

Why? If you have a great country, be proud of it.
Sweden people should be proud, you have a good country.

lol @ south africa, proud of what, its crime problems?
i cant really understand how people can be so proud of their countries sometimes,
being proud of your family is perfectly understandable and normal, but being proud of your country is kind of farfetched.
if your country wins a gold medal it doesnt mean you have anything to do with it or any connection to the people who achieved it, you just happened to be born inside that country, thats all.
i am proud of my family, but i m not proud of my countries (croatia/bosnia).
not because of the wars and suffering, but because i never really liked the concept of nationality, its all about being insecure.
nazis in ww2 germany were the greatest patriots of all times, to the extent where they didnt see themselves as individuals, but just a tiny piece of the nation.
thats where american patriotism leads to nowadays, be a lazy fuck and dont try to make the best of your life, because your country rocks anyway and will kick everyone´s ass.

Haha, its just how things work. When you live in a good country you think about the small things not poor people have time to think about. Small things other people give a shit about. We are used to live in a good country, so we need to make it better, by compaining.

We can´t love or be proud of our country as openly as the americans, cause there´s a very big risk of us being misunderstood. One of the main reasons for that is that almost every nazi pig in this country is just so very open about their "pride".
I´m pretty sure, that if i took a swedish flag and walked down the street shouting how much i love sweden, atleast half of the poeple who saw me would think i was racist/nazi.

I don't think patriotism is a particularly admirable trait.
I do really like my country, and am grateful for the amenities it provides. But if my country is in the wrong, I have no problem with admitting to it, like alot of americans seem to have.
I would have no problem if in the far future, all nations joined into one democratic whole. It would benefit mankind immensely.
I think this quote from that web page is self-explanatory: -

Our country is the world, our countrymen are all mankind. We love the land of our nativity, only as we love all other lands. The interests, rights, and liberties of American citizens are no more dear to us than are those of the whole human race. Hence we can allow no appeal to patriotism, to revenge any national insult or injury.

I think you have a mixed up view of patriotism. Patriotism is the ability to admit that your country fucked up and still love it to death.
I love Canada. I love the ppl, the standard of living, the entertainment, etc etc
But if our Government fucks up, yeah, Im not going to turn a blind eh and say "well, we're canadian and we cant fuck up"...that has nothing to do patriotism, rather sheer ignorance and lack of information/intelligence.
Im a Patriot for sure. And I dont knock anyone for thinking their country is best. when ur blind to all the facts and use patriotism as a cop out, thats when shit hits the fan.

wtf has Venezuela done in 'science and technology, the arts, sports and political influence in the world.' ?
I rarely feel national pride but sometimes I do get flutters of it. when I look at a brief overview of the UK though I can't look past most of the negatives such as n. ireland, scotland wales, the south of England and the north east

Why people are proud of being born in some specific coordinate, and it's surroundings is beyond my comprehension. But it's something to laugh at when I'm bored.
Nationalism/patriotism is like a religion to me. And I despise religions.
Yes, yes I'm back.

same view, although i do rank religion somewhat lower, after all nations have their own specific cultures and artists which are important aspects of humanity as a whole;
religions hardly offer anything - most of the time they re of destructive nature.

Making up your own definitions of things fucks up in the end. If people was to make their own definitions we will have to turn Australia into a prison again.
We should adopt the same kind of nationalism that China has. Nationalism will raise the morale of the people, what so bad about it? Nationalism doesn't say that you have to hate other countries or people, those things evolve.
And the idea of turning the whole world into one democratic nation yes, a nation requires a nation it will be overthrown really quickly. Democracy in such a scale would never work due to all the stupid people out there, that is one of the reasons why I despise democracy, they vote for bad things. Think of it as a forum, it is a dictatorship and a police state, once you get banned you want to get back in again. The moderators got absolute power (except the admin(s)). I never see people complaining about the fact that the users don't get to vote about things happening around.

Nationalism can be about thinking your country is the best, which by definition means other countries and their people are lesser then you, that's the bad thing. It's easy to then have a false sense of superiority to others, nothing wrong with being proud of your national identity, just don't let it cloud your judgement on what is right and what is wrong with your country.
Personnally I can't see myself dying for my country or for my countrymen just in the name of patriotism, I would fight for my family, my friends and my ideals, but never my country.

It sounds like many people in this forum have low self-esteem. You should be proud of yourself, your family, friends and country.
I actually feel sorry for some of you.

Hmm why feel sorry for them if they get all their values fulfilled with their friends and families?

Actually i dont think anyone said their not proud of themself, their family or friends. This thread was about national pride right?
I actually feel more sorry for you and people like you with lots of national pride, whats the point? It aint some kind of contest, national pride is just a bit childish.

imo people who are too proud of their country are just weak individuals and lack self esteem,
hence they try to make themselves feel better by thinking about how great their country is.
family is important, friends, but fuck the country.
