But we arent in the early stages really. It's game development itself thats the problem. Barely anyone wants to invest where there are even the smallest uncertainties, leading to no one bothering to make fully fledged VR games as it's niche.

Nothing wrong with niches, without them gaming would be very boring, be it Flight sims or super complex strategy games - all niches.
I'd say we've moved from the very early stages to early mid stages of VR, we are still figuring a few things out but things are getting way more solid then they were in the early stages.
They key to VR is to take long breaks from it, then when you pick it up again you're as immersed and amazed as when you bought it. For example I picked up my PSVR after like 1 year, i was so happy i hadn't sold it off.. i bet it's going to be the same with Quest 2, fun wears off (like with everything), you wait for some months, pick it up and have a blast for a week or two.
There are many full fledged VR games that are great and entire genres that you really won't enjoy in the same way after playing in VR - flight sims, racing, golf (and similar sports games), or games like NMS or Subnatutica, Alien Isolation etc.

hasn't facebook sold over 4 million quest 2 in the US alone already?
globally its estimated north of 8 million units
that's less and less niche with each day. and thats just one VR headset variant, albeit by far the most popular one

yeah this is me, i lose interest in VR for a couple months - literally dread putting on the headset, and then end up finding something fun to try, end up playing through all the newly updated games, i'm back
right now, i just picked up Ironlights (crossplay and buy!), great fighting game. lots of singleplayer content with mocapped bots and even hundreds of usermade ones which gives you plenty of variety to fight against.
Spoiler: | |
also playing a bit of Contractors VR from time to time, these guys seemingly keep improving the game while making infinitely less money than their competitors

ugh this game really needs workshop support to shine and the dev kind of just shot it down saying it was too much work
https://store.steampowered.com/app/751630/After_the_Fall__Launch_Edition/
interested in this new one, but also quite skeptical of the price tag and possible dlc infestation have to wait for reviews. looks good if nothing else.
we're still getting some good titles here and there, but you have to be damn patient. would grab another headset in the blink of an eye if mine died though, get one if you still like fun

Just got myself an Oculus Quest 2; my first VR since PSVR which I didn’t think much of due to all the wires and low resolution.
Other than beat saber, what other games should I sideload? (The only reason I bought it is because the games will all be free)

+1 walking dead
jamming a knife into zombie heads is awesome, and I really enjoyed the scavenging
great game imo despite it's limitations graphically and in environment interactivity
vader immortal was decent but I didn't like how everyone was a robot or wears a mask because the quest (which it was made for) is so underpowered they couldn't do faces.
had it's moments though. for free it's worth playing, not that long anyway

64 here, didn't see any benefit of getting 256, I only bought Beat Saber from the Quest store. Quest 2 games look like shit in most cases. I'm streaming Steam games with a Wifi 6 router via Virtual Desktop. Haven't even tried Air Link or whatever the Oculus Feature is called.

Whats a realistic price currently for a (used) Quest 2? ~300 EUR for a 64 GB?

Oh so you can stream games, not install them onto the device itself, got it.
How does it work if the PC is connected via cable in a different room and you want to play in a different room where there's wifi signal?

nah, 300 sounds expensive. i gave 390 new for 128gb. 128 was cheaper than 64 too, for some reason. vr is kind of disgusting second hand, thus it lose a lot of value.
edit: new here are now 350 euro, for 128GB..

how it works? it connects to wifi..
there's always the disadvantage of latency and worse picture quality over wifi since you're converting it to a streaming video so it has to process all that. quest 2 games looks better picture wise, but worse graphically (laughably bad often).

How is the yarr-availability for specific software for this? If I understand correctly, many of the software titles are only available in the Oculus store. Are there releases for those games?

When it comes to PC VR titles they come from VR-VREX group

So I got the Quest 2 and it's really great so far. However I have not yet managed to play pirated games on it, at least not PCVR games.
The normale "Oculus"-games work fine via Loader. Also games launch as normal via SteamVR, as long as they are "bought" (I tried it with Google Earth).
However when I want to play HL:A for example, it shows up on my normal PC monitor instead. And yes, of course I checked the box "Show in VR library" when adding it to Steam. I also tried launching those games via the Oculus Link Application, doesn't work.
It's probably just something really stupid on my end, but how can I have those games being displayed on the Quest 2?

Wish there was a headstrap/facial interface for it as qualitative and comfortable as the Index/Reverb G2 one
It's basically why I haven't gotten a Quest 2 yet. Even though I think It would be a nice complementary HMD to my Reverb G2 given the wirelessness and exclusives
I tried friends' Quest 2s with after market Headstraps that they swear by and it's god awful, feels crazy cheap and flimsy and is miles less comfortable

Yeah, the pressure against the face is rather high. The PSVR is miles ahead on that part. I will try the Elite strap, which is supposed to be much better than the OG headstrap.

Everyone I know that got the Elite Strap switched to something else eventually
Elite Strap sounds like some quality first party thing but its cheaper than some of the aliexpress headstraps.
If you want the real deal you apparently gotta go with the Vive Deluxe Audio Strap
