why would they go for someone who looks "grown up", Paul Atreides in the book is 15. |
Because not everything works/translates as well as in a book, but its fine, im sure a lot of ppl will like this movie, i respect opinions.

Back from cinema.
Liked the movie well enough. tbh it was a bit boring and had way too many premonitions.
But I loved the visuals and audio and cinematography. The movie felt like 1 long trailer for better or worse. A lot was happening but I could not feel the weight of events
I have a question about watching 4k hdr releases on pc connected to lg oled tv.
I am using madvr and mpc hc. Does it matter what audio release has? aac, dts, atmos... if all I do is watch on tv stereo speakers or headphones ? In some movies, the audio is really quiet to the point I have to use mpc hc audio boost when I watch on headphones.
I have dolby atmos disabled on TV. As well as all enhancements. And the Cinema mode on this lg tv sounds awesome. But headphones connected to pc are normal stereo.

For the audio i just use VLC's compressor with default settings with the threshold set to rly low, will give you loud dialog and the booms wont blow ur socks off, pretty easy fix.

Nice, should try that instead of the Auto Volume feature on my LG. Does the picture still looks washed out and grey as fuck? Cause I remember VLC playing video grey as fuck.

Whilst I wouldn't consider myself a massive Dune fan, I have read some of the book, played many of the games, and watched the various mini series, so I have a good idea of the world and story which may have influenced my views.
I enjoyed it, yes it's quite long and has a slow pace, but I like that. It's trying to build an intricate world and story. People seem to either love it or hate it, it looks like a few people left early during the screening. Looking forward to part 2!

Glad that it's confirmed, the movie was essentially a Spice-flavoured appetizer but with untapped potential ready to be unleashed. Fingers crossed

Thank god, I can never have enough of slow and atmospheric Sci-Fi and lately there has been way too little of it.

This movie was okay.. a 6.8/10 for me. The visuals were very impressive. The characters were less engaging though. While the old movie was a weird dreamy mess I enjoyed it for what it was and I give the Lynch version 6.5/10 (the visuals were of course fantastic in comparison with the 1984 version). We'll see how good Pt.2 is since it will probably cover more material than David Lynch's weird version.

3/10
Emo-Paul, black dyke "Liet kynes". Miscasting and bad (sometimes non-existent) actor play.
No Irulan, no Feyd-Rautha, no Piter de Vries. Very SJW.
They did pretty good visuals, though.

Dune - 5/10
In someway I wanted this to be great but it didn't deliver. It felt too long and rushed at the same time. Too much time spend on Command & Conquer cutscene - look at our harvesters, harvester is attacked evacuate. I literaly was waiting to take control of the troops and do some missions.
Too little spend on character development - I didn't care for anyone, almost no one was flashed. Baron Harkonen is fat, floats and it's evil because someone said so. It was like read the book and then watch it because then you will know the back stories.
The dialogues were IMO cliche and short. 'Honor, honor - pat on the back - money, profit, kill, honor, destiny, Paul'.
It's a pretty movie in terms of sets and costumes - really gorgeous but when there's action it was CGI Westwood quality tm in high resolution.
As goes for music was waiting for fucking Wonder Woman appear on screen anytime her theme played.

7/10 (even do I agree with the flaws pointed out above)
The visuals/ world building carry the movie, "but I could not feel the weight of events" (like Vurt said)
Question: Do the books also portray sword fights between regular soldiers? It always bums me to see this in Sci-Fi settings

If I remember correctly, the reasoning behind this in the books was that when one shoots a "lasgun" ( i think thats what they where called) at a personal shield, you get a nuclear explosion, so since personal shields where in wide use, everyone used swords instead of pewpews.

Thanks, another lazy excuse for the mismatch between interstellar tech and war tech.

Frank wrote it knowing they'll make a huge blockbuster movie out of his work and back then CGI was very very expensive so he used as little gun play as possible so they can use VFX budget on his visual ambitions.
I gief this first quarter of the book 7.5/10 it's a faithful adaptation, but much like the book I mean the tome it's fucking boring page by page by page until you get to the nice stuff. Also don't like Paul that much just yet. Everybody else is great.

Some technology is banned in Dune, anything with a computer chip for example. That's why stuff seems archaic.

Islamic? I noticed influences from mainly the ancient middle east and the bedouin desert-nomadic culture but I didn't really notice any allahu akbar or any other particular islamic stuff.

they removed the word "jihad" and renamed it "crusade".
I don't think they even know what they're upset about, it's just important for them to be constantly butthurt no mater what.
