At least we had Hidden and Dangerous 2 on PC back then, the true king of the genre gameplay-wise. I wish we had something like that today Okay

I remember SWAT 4 as "the king" of these tactical-FPS games. Also Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear and Ghost Recon Adcanced Warfare.

But that's just what I remember reading in video games magazines so it's probably subjective which one is best. Me being just a simpleton back then and admit of never playing any of them except for Delta Force in muntiplayer. And also barely knew any English to understand them. Sad It's a mystery how I played almost every single strategy game in the 2000's but that's getting too much off topic....

Absolutely, each one of those classic tactical FPS games had something special that made them stand out. If you can stomach the vintage visuals and some shaky AI (but not worse than today's AI Razz), you can still have plenty of fun with them since they all received widescreen patches, community fixes and even big overhauls like SWAT 4's Elite Force mod. The fact that they were all games designed with the PC in mind is noticeable and it's the main reason why they still hold up so well.

SWAT 4 simulated handling a team of special police units in tight and very atmospheric spaces where you had to make quick decisions and neutralize enemies without any casualties, while H&D2 offered larger levels with various objectives to approach in a semi sandbox-y way, vehicles, sniping sessions and various WWII scenarios. Rainbow Six (which peaked with Raven Shield) and Ghost Recon (both the original ones and GRAW 1/2 on PC - not the derp console versions) had maps ranging from close quarters to more open spaces, but still retained the tight squad management and tactical lethal approach. Good stuff :')
