For me anyway it's the hobby of the PC itself as much as the hobby of games.
Games could not advance or change ever again and I'd upgrade my machine as parts came.
Me and my group of friends from waaaay back on IRC from the PC channel we was in, see that as much of the encompassing PC hobby as s whole, as what we do ON it.
It's why my friend Avi (the one I get parts from) and me wanted to start a computer store. But he did it on his own as I got this new good job and he was in OHIO. Because like a mechanic that loves working on cars and has 3-4 project cars of his own he works on retromodding. We like building things with new parts.

I understand wanting to have a high end pc, but upgrading for the sake of upgrading is a bit much isn't it? Not that i'm trying to tell you how to spend your money, that's your business not mine.

The new AMD cards will probably be monsters if they pull "Zen" of GPU´s, not sure where you need that kind of power tho, modern games are so bad.

@Stormwolf
No different than if I had the money I would have an overpriced, overbuilt Plymouth Barracuda with an all new modern engine and turbocharger that I would always enjoying browsing parts for. It's the enjoyment of doing it itself, not so much if I NEED that horsepower.
OR the guy that loves fishing that always buys the new reels, tackle, and poles. The old caught fish just as well. But the hobby of fishing to him includes the enjoyment of the new trinkets and do-dads.

there is no reason at all, but you know i still got a 970 and who knows, maybe it's dying in 1-2 years or there is just one game which i can't play then. would be nice if it would be better for customers then. otherwise i will probably go the console route then and just buy a small desktop pc.

'New AMD cards will probably be mosters' is just like 'this is the year of Linux Desktop'. I really do hope that I'm so wrong on this. Let's wait and see.
The only modern game worth investing in your hw will probably be new Battlefield if you are into BF games. Other than that the situation is indeed quite 'meh'.

Agreed. There just isn't much interesting being made anymore. I was looking forward to diablo 4 for example, but now i'm ready for that project to crash and burn. I don't think it would be a very demanding game anyway though. I don't know a single demanding game that's incoming atm that i really look forward to.

4k/1440p should be the focus for the next years.
I doubt there will be drastic demands for more than that, at least in the next 10 years until 8k will be realistically stable and achievable for the end user.
8k is basically for the rich or demonstration.

Yeah, I share the same sentiment. I have yet to find a game (in my sphere of interest) where I feel I need to replace my 1060. Thanks to my card being a pretty damn good overclocker I get a 24% increase in GPU clock and 18% increase in VRAM clock.

I'm also surviving with a seven-year-old GPU and an overclocked CPU from 2010, but that required standards to be lowered in order to accommodate the current scenario. Gaming at puny 1080p and resorting to quite a few compromises to achieve 60ish fps without clogging those 4-but-not-reallyGB of VRAM are part of the daily experience. It is doable, thankfully, since we're sitting in the midst of an unforeseen stagnation where low-end hardware is still the primary focus, but...yeah
That's without mentioning VR which is something that piques my curiosity, especially with driving sims. I wouldn't think about upgrading the PC if I didn't need to, though, since for me its only purpose is to provide digital entertainment - with no alternatives as consoles will never be an option. Let's really hope for slightly more reasonable prices in the near-ish-ish future before another apocalypse arrives

The only one giving my 1070 trouble so far is Flight Simulator on VR.
I gave it another try yesterday after the big performance update. The improvement is significant, but still VR doesn't look good enough, while also being choppy.

Hello from a friend who just had a look would it be worth investing 60€ into GTX 1050 Ti 4GB and hoping AMD FSR to save the day.
Spoiler: | It would be too much hassle and not worth money, time and effort, especially with an ultrawide monitor -> pass.

If it wasn't for my 970 death I might skipped this year altogether, would save me the trouble getting new GPU at reasonable price.
I should have just buy 1660 ti.

I mean, I don't see an issue with it...
It's to prevent people from selling their cards since they get them in advance before they send it theirs.

6800xt works great on MSFS. My 1080ti struggled.
Only places I have FPS issues is like flying low 100's of feet over paris, or new york. Then it's not 'bad' but can tell its not full FPS.

"DLSS is just a way to boost performance and specially if you are running out of VRAM which is like a bandaid for the RTX 3080 smaller VRAM compared to the RX 6900XT which tends to be faster in all scenarios except Ray Tracing in which depending on the game, can be almost as fast like in Resident Evil, Forza Horizon and Godfall; Luckily AMD's FSR is gaining faster traction.
And considering they use less power and are showing noticeable improvements in the performance with recent games that just underscores the 6900XT superiority over the RTX 3080."

Now that was a lot of nonsense. And isn't the 6800xt the equivalent to the 3080?

My current understanding is that FSR is just some sharpening or something similar. DLSS hallucinates details with a deep learning model, that can produce convincing details. Unless I hear anything else from FSR I have no use for it. They are not replacements of each other.
