Games are a matter of opinion.
Some people like games on the PS2, some like games on the Xbox.
I could argue all day that such and such a title is good enough reason to buy an Xbox alone, but you may think the game is shite.

well if u wanna go by facts then
fact: xbox is more powerful... but seriously why would i fiddle more with my xbox after forking out about 1500USD on a comp? it can be modded, you can store games and play directly off the HD... uh so what? whats so hard about opening a disc cover and actually putting a game in? oh and if u wanna look at it from a bad pov well harddrives can break down which means u could lose everything as opposed to only a disc or two due to scratches and whatnot.
fact: ps2 has an infinitely larger gaming base and i doubt anythings gonna change about that even after the ps3 launch.
fact: xbox is frowned upon by japanese developers which happens to be the place where the world's best games come from... the creators of practically almost every popular console out there cant go wrong now can they?
take a game like shadow of the colossus for the ps2. it looks ugly and edgy as hell... but did that stop ppl from buying it? uh dont think so. u can say what u want but cosoles are for gaming and gaming only. chatting, surfing the web, doing all kinds of weird crap etc. i leave that up to my trusty powerhouse of a pc.
sheesh if they want the xbox to be popular they gotta stop thinking of it as a damn miniature pc. i mean the whole marketing concept of the 360 was based upon nothing but pure power.

What a PC can do is irrelevent. We're making a direct comparison between the two consoles, so that basically nullifies your whole argument.

ok give me a better explanation of why xbox is doing shitty in japan then. because apparently if we followed ur logic which means power= sales then apparently it should be top of the line which coincidentally enough it isnt.
so it still comes down to the games and for points on that look above.

oh no i do have an xbox though i didnt mod it myself. i agree its easier just to transfer ur games and play directly off it but to say that its a reason why should choose the xbox over the ps2 is just =/.
and perhaps i missed something in the whole vs thing but all im basing my asnwers upon was *which do u prefer and why*.
as for the games im sure that the fanbase for japanese games is just as big(if not bigger) in the western world as it is in japan. they can break into the western market while MS have failed to break into the japanese market with their console from the west.
as for xbox being easier to develop for... does that really say much when there arent that many great games to play with? aside from a few shiners(which theyre totally whoring the crap out of if ur asking me like splinter cell and halo etc.) almost all the above avg games are either multiplatform or pc ports thus leaving no originality for the xbox.
i think im losing focus so ill just stop here >_>

ok i'll have a stab.
XBOX is prolly failing in japan due to lack thereof of "quirky" japanese titles. And the fact that japan has no natural resources and it is drilled into them to buy their own products.
Japan makes the best games in the world does it? Id disagree because whats best is all down to a matter of taste. I think the bioware rpgs from the xbox are better than any of the rpgs ive played on ps2. dragon quest 8 is prolly the only one id put on par with those rpgs. What i would say instead as a truer statement is..japan HAS produced SOME of the worlds best games but the same can be said for the west (doom , quake, half life 1/2, splintercell, far cry, grand theft auto series all genre defining titles in their respective genres the west for FPS/ACTION is what the east is for RPG/PLATFORM)
My point is (again) its all a matter of taste, i think mario is over rated (but i do contend the original is a classic and the mario64 had some defining things) and there hasnt been a good sonic game since sonic 2. Other people of course will disagree. I think the xbox is better not bacause of games alone, but because of its capabilities and the amount of functionality its gives me and its relevance to how i want to use that functionality. You're happy with your pc and ps2, thats fine, i'm happy having a game/media centre and streaming solution all in one lil $150 box set underneath my tv

japan:
best survival horror : silent hill, fatal frame, resident evil etc.
best fighting games: no need for examples since we all know its true.
racing:well... matter of taste(GT/burnout/need for speed etc.)
best soccer/football game: pro evo series. fifa doesnt even come close.
best rpgs: i prefer story driven rpgs as opposed to mindless hack n slash. bioware is an exception although star wars 2 didnt live up to the original and jade empire was crap in the fighting department. indeed the quirks are what defines japanese rpgs but maybe thats why they shine more than anything else in that department. i mean kingdom hearts... who the hell wouldve thought of that concept? lol.
as for WoW im pretty sure blizzard came up with the concept after the mmorpg genre garnered interest from lots of players and they rode on the success of wc3 in order to attract a huge fanbase.
best tactical stealth/action game: M G S(blows SC outta the water... my opinion obviously and ive tried all 3 and never did complete any because i got too bored of the exact same gameplay throughout the entire game. the attention to detail alone in MGS games... holy crap hideo kojima is a perfectionist O.o
best platformers: not a fan really but havent seen any platformer from the west rival japan although prince of persia was inded something marvelous... the first installment that is.
best original games: the latest of which is of course shadow of the colossus for ps2.
the west wins in terms of strategy games, FPS and... psychotic behaviour: manhunt and gta >_>. and i also think its appropriate to give them racing too. oh and ADVENTURE GAMEs... i LOVE a decent adventure game(cant wait for sequesl of longest journey and sam n max and a 4th broken sword perhaps?) so props for that too.

sorry to resurrect this thread..
my vote goes for PS2..
most of games on xbox are on PC too...true, there are some crappy exclusives or games that eventually be released on PC (HALO-2) but one game is not enough to buy console..
ps2, on the other hand, has way too many exclusives...to name few: God of War, bunch of RPGs, GT3, GT4...
BUT...if you really dig consoles you should get both Xbox and PS2...

when deciding which of these two game consoles is best for you, you should certainly take into consideration what types of games each offers, and which games you are most interested in playing. PS2, having been around a little while longer, tends to have the larger game library, but Xbox is not terribly far behind. In addition, Xbox tends to produce games geared more towards adults than children. The graphics seen on the new Xbox games are also clearly a step ahead of PS2 graphics. There is, however, nearly a PS2 game for everyone, and there are lot of PS2 games geared towards teenagers. If you are looking for games for kids, the Nintendo Gamecube may actually be a better choice than either of these two - and it's cheaper.......
the bottom line is, PS2 is a little older than the Xbox, and is geared for a younger gaming crowd. If you are buying this console for a teenager, the PS2 may actually be your best bet - they have more games, the console is cheaper, and the games are more appropriate for that age group. The Xbox is a little more expensive, has fewer games, but it out-performs PS2 and has more adult oriented games
