Me, clearly. And I wrote that because it's the closest I could get to what it was namely pretend-clever (which sounds way worse).
And NO, it's not the same as pretentious - the result would be in this case, but in itself, it is what it is: people writing something thinking it's clever when it's not. Then again, Meta is pretty damn lazy in any artform - it's rarely if ever clever and in this case it had too much random shit to work for me.
The only half-decent part, was the referencing of the bible as a way to kill mass appeal with buff Jesus - that got half a smile. The rest including the dead ticketman was just meh.

But yeah... on topic: Was a rather dull episode. We'll see if it picks up. Seeing how much of a mess it was just to get this season going I'm not expecting much.
Directed by ‘Tower of God’ director, Takeshi Sano, Morty goes on an adventure to Tokyo, Japan to try and help stop “The Genocider”. Nothing weird happens. Produced by Sola Entertainment and animated at Telecom Animation Film.
I prefer the less structured show.
While post season 2 some episodes are strong, a lot are weak and feel dated in the edgy humor. Whilst the other feels fresh in humor just less structured in plot outline. I'd rather have a fun time watching a get baked and relaxed show than cringe at old reddit jokes.
The writers changed after second season. This episode is just recycled ideas and no smarts. OMG Morty fucks up another civilization, Morty can't fuck Jessica, OMG Rick has nemesis whom he wants to show his superiority with no smart writing and low humor. It's written by the guy who did dragon fucking episode *ugh*.

Episode 2 was pretty good, a bit predictable progression after the 2nd-3rd clone reveal, but was good I think.
Episode 3 with the planet girl seemed a Mad Lib rehash of ideas they already did a few times, to me.
For example:
Random toss away character Morty gets involved with on his own, everyone warns him about them and he gets mad, they turn out to be bad because he is naive of judging characters and situations..It's the space super hero group episode all over again.
And Rick going on a planet bender is rehash of the Hivemind being he was having orgies with: Rick going all out on full on bender, falls for them which is out of character for him, then a lesson learned (?) about getting attached only for a love of partying and sex as a common interest is bad.
Thinking about it, BOTH the A and B story of this episode is the same story:
Character meets someone, falls for them, realizes they are shitty people, Character gets sad..

It was a spoof of a short horror about giant sperm and a tale about incest and bestiality.
I even didn't paid attention to episode 7. Rick and Morty become stale. Watch Venture Bros or Metalocalypse or Mr. Pickles. Venture Bros. is IMO best adult cartoon.

One good episode out of five thus far, not quite the glorious comeback that I was hoping. While it's objectively difficult to always find new effective stratagems to surprise the audience after the show has done and shown the unimaginable by subverting expectations(tm) in tons of unique ways, I wish they didn't try to push for such a juvenile and ultimately hollow type of humour. We need brilliance in our horse semen program, dammit.
Rick and Morty embraced the cringe edgy humour it was labeled as prior to recent seasons.
Before it toed the line of edgy cringe. To the point where people called it edgy but it never was. It went back to the bttf short they did for this. It is a shell of it former self if the episodes continue they way that they do.
It's all tumblr writer now all about out edging themselves cause being edgy in a cartoon is dope.
I still enjoy the episodes, but they're no longer the same off beat humor they had before. You'll get a laugh here and there, but the hysterical lolllery is targeted at a different audience.
