Hey,

So the TV i gave to my dad like 2 years ago died. Sony XF9005. Only green led was still on after trying power on + volume up button (to force reset firmware).

Now he called the Sony service and had the motherboard replaced for 250 euros (they gave him 3 months warranty on it). Technician left with TV working, dad unplugged it, then connected the Samsung Soundbar HW-450 to it via hdmi, plugged the TV back into the outlet and same thing AGAIN.

Now, the technician said he'd be back tomorrow to take the TV into service since something else is probably also broken (maybe the psu).

Now i ask, any chance the soundbar could damage it? both motherboards actually? Could the hdmi cable do this? Or the soundbar? Tried searching the net for info but best i could find was basically that it might burn the port but not the motherboard completely.

Would like to know before he gets it back from the service, just in case, so he doesn't end up breaking it again out of his unintentional "fault".

Thanks guys.

Afaik the soundbar acts as a receiver, the only thing is sends/emits is towards the speakers, so hardly to be the culprit.

I'm thinking about something else, a defective wall socket which somewhat overloaded when your dad powered the soundbar and the TV was more sensitive and took the hit ( that if they're both powered from the same socket )- it's just a guess.

Could that be it? He didn't plug it directly into the wall socket, but into an "extension cord" with more sockets (he has a laptop and his phone charger in that).

Soundbar is on the eARC hdmi slot (so also receives and sends? i think?)

Also worked fine until now (2 years ~), laptop and phone still working fine in there.

Any way to check if the socket is still ok without breaking anything else?

Could be that stupid "prelungitor", as we know, we have fairly cheap ones around the stores.

But it's just a wild guess, the TV might be defective.

Agree that HDMI works both ways, but in this case, the TV sends the signal, soundbar receives it and sends it towards the speakers, not the other way around.

Very hard to troubleshoot online, curious what the tech guys say.

Yeah i did read something about some sony tvs breaking the motherboards several times. Will see tomorrow i guess after they take it to the service.

I did order an expensive extension cord for him, hopefully that helps for when he gets the TV back.

Sadly the apartment they live in (my parents) is kinda old and the outlets are old as well (30 years or so? ).. sucks.

I hope he doesn't plug in a vacuum cleaner or electric heater to that multisocket extension. Plugging in 1-2KW+ stuff to a socket where other things are already connected since that may cause some short overload and/or unstable power delivery. It depends on the quality of the power delivery and the wiring. If the house/apartment is using old/cheap/shoddy wiring it may even be a risk to turn on 2KW+ equipment in other sockets/rooms.

However, if that model is known for issues I'm fairly certain it's a matter of replacing a bad component/part in the TV.

Wiring should be fine, at least i think it should. Afaik buildings from the communist era were built solid with good materials. Now, i also know the wiring needs to be replaced every 30 years or so just to be safe, first thing i did in my apartment when i renovated.

But yeah, can't do anything about the old part though. I offered multiple tmes to help him find an electrician to check the sockets/redo wiring. But he's stubborn, same with mom.

Just found it weird how a new motherboard got fried as soon as he turned off the tv. Guessing the TVs power supply must be at fault or something then. Gonna try to at least convince him to also get an electrician to check the apartment before he gets the TV back, if it iis indeed related to the outlets or whatever, he might llose the warranty on the mobo he just paid for + other stuff around the house.

Not the case. They live in an old building ( communist era ).

Weird update for anyone interested.

The new motherboard seems fine, tech checked the tv again today, my dad had a usb "bluetooth" adapter plugged in and that was somehow screwing up the tv - preventing it from booting normally (not sure why he had it in, he wasnt sure either ... ook? ). Anyway...

The old mobo died from other reasons though, this one wasnt dead, just bugging because of that adapter.

Anyway, he plugged in all things with the tech guy there, turned it off / on 20 times, i also got him that expensive extension cord / multisocket whatever it's called and seems fine now.

Thanks all.
