The guy (that was an environment artist in Mirror's Edge) that was working on remaking Dear Esther has been granted a license by Valve to use the Source Engine and sell the game on Steam.
Video from when it was simply a mod and utilized the aged "Source 2007" version of the engine:
Coming in Summer 2011
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
The new water shader for example is now much more sophisticated and has optimisations which Jack and I had planned to add but were already implemented – saving us a lot of work. There's also a neat vertex wind shader that will allow me to add realistic sway to static prop foliage along with the detail sprites, proper multicore support, fast model rendering and a queued material system and much more which results in super-speedy render times that in some cases improved performance by 50-60fps! (And we haven't even added in our detail sprite optimisations yet!) This is exciting as it means DE should be able to run smoothly at full detail on even the most moderate of PCs, and hopefully at some point, Macs! – Also made possible with the new Engine.

It’s been a while without any updates as we’ve ported Dear Esther across to the Portal 2 engine, but we’re finally done, and work has now started on integrating Steamworks. So we’ve started discussions with Valve about a launch window, and this is looking very likely to be either the end of January or the beginning of February next year.
There’s still a bunch of stuff to be done –lots of testing on lots of machines, tweaking and fine-tuning the environment and audio, getting all the surrounding work done that goes along with launching a game but isn’t the actual build itself. But it’s very close –we’re pretty comfortably at beta (without Steamworks) so it’s a major milestone for us.
Right now,we’re being judged for IGF and fingers crossed we make the final there. We’re also going to be presenting at GDC in the main conference track, which is brilliant,so it’s all hopefully shaping up for a great 2012.
Sin317-"im 31 years old and still surprised at how much shit comes out of my ass actually ..."
SteamDRM-"Call of Duty is the symbol of the true perfection in every aspect. Call of Duty games are like Mozart's/Beethoven's symphonies"
deadpoetic-"are you new to the cyberspace?"
Not sure how much I'd be willing to pay for what appears to be a prettier, better version of Myst (which is what it kind of looks like), but definitely interested in it.

It's often referred to as an "interactive ghost story." By exploring the environment, you discover more pieces of the mysterious backstory, which are presented as voice-acted journal entries from an unknown narrator. There aren't any enemies, and I don't remember there being any puzzles. You just explore, and try to piece together in your own mind what happened, because it doesn't really spell it all out for you.
Most people think "ohhh, so it's an adventure, right?"..... before they hear there are no puzzles and you just walk, listen to the naration (which varies a little every time you play) and try to piece together the (a) story.
It has more in common with a(n interactive) movie than a game. There's no "game" (eg the goal to win) in this game.

sounds to me like waste of sources and beautifull graphic design :/
the first thing came into my mind after i read your coment, was the old quests i played on my c64 with minimal graphic images and alot of text to read and type (some were only text with no visuals) and you had to use your imagination to complete the "missed" visuals...it is actualy like book:)

No. It's just beautiful graphic design being used for something other than a traditional game. Computers offer so much potential for new kinds of artistic projects, and this is a great example. If it's not for you, that's fine, but you have to understand that just because something has 3D graphics, doesn't mean something is going to be a traditional videogame.

@Cedge
i guess i will check it out when it will be out just to see what is it about or how it feels, but right now from the descriptions,it sounds like it is not for me but it is nice to see new idea's and creativity:)
