Well guys this is looking rosier, He has manged to put the image and the virtual drive xbe on a normal size dvd and its working apparently.

The reason this seems to work is that the default.xbe in the image is original and unpatched.

I looked up "gormless" in the dictionary, it said "without gorm" .... so i looked up "gorm" but it wasn't there ????

I just have to second the statement that Codemasters really are geniuses. All you PC gamers probably remember their FADE protection scheme. It seems like they made a version of FADE for the Xbox. An uncracked game that used said protection would work for a while but gradually degrading itself until you would be left with a demo of the game.

The smart thing about such a protection is that you won't immediately notice that the game isn't 100% working. So, hats off to Codemasters!

PS. I admire Codemasters but it's not like I don't want this protection go bye-bye Smile

Yeah that was for Operation Flashpoint I believe but it was never implemented as far as I know.

So the problems with the first Xbox scene release of Toca3 are really down to a new form of defense against piracy?

May the NFOrce be with you always.

I looks like it. I tried to fiddle around with a self made ISO from the WORKING MRN release.

But my Idea didn't seem to work out. I tried recreating the iso it with a .lyt layout file from the original disk (which was kindly provided by the person getting the toca 3 backup running), but that didn't work. Same results as every time: World tour not working, game freezing after Profile creation etc.

I then made a Backup of my only original game (Splinter Cell) via the method rocky5 used to get TOCA 3 working. After That was done, I extracted that iso (to make sure I used the exact same files) and recreated a new "Conventional" iso using a selfmade .lyt layout (created from the original disk). The Goal was to create 2 ISOS that I can compare to each other to find differences. But there were too many differences to get it working at all.

I surely hope a working iso (using the iso_ripper method) will be out soon. Until then, I will try to fiddle around further. But I suspect this will not help much either. But hey, I have holidays

I can't see why there is no working scene release of this yet. The boys at xboxscene have this licked already, see the last couple of pages from this thread http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=492703.

There is no chance of getting the MRN release working as it reports the wrong TOC size for the protection. The new working iso is 4.3GB big and is created by using the xbox iso ripper from the virtual drive tools for xbox, theory on why this works is it reports a TOC size of 6.7GB, but the second part of the ISO is not needed as there is no game data on it. So you can just burn the first part to disc. (The 6.7GB ISO is split into 2 because of the FAT size limitation on the xbox, for those who were wondering)

Here is my summary on how to make a working backup from the original.

All credits go to rocky5 for working out how to get around the protection and make a working ISO.

The copy protection checks the TOC for the disk size. The original ToCA DVD is actually 6.7 Gb.
Using rocky5s method below using iso-ripper results in a TOC of the full 6.7 Gb on a 4Gb Iso. Therefore the TOCA copy protection is happy with the game.

  • Download Virtual C drive and CD/DVD drive image utilities 1.0.1.
(This is normally a tool used with softmodded xboxes - however ISO ripper will work fine with any modded xbox).
  • Transfer the program ISO Ripper to a directory in the apps directory on your xbox.
There is a file backup.cfg that you can change the backup location to what you want:
    \Device\Harddisk0\Partition6\games
    F:\Games\isoripper
etc or where ever you want to put the ISO on your xbox.
  • Now put your original copy of Race driver 3 in the xbox
  • You must have over 6.7Gb's free on the hdd
  • Now locate ISO ripper.xbe and run it. Now wait!! The screen will go blank.
  • After about 1hr it should go back to the dash now you should find a folder called race driver 3 in it you will have 4 files
    default.xbe, errorsectors.bin, race driver 3 part 1.ISO(~4gig), race driver 3 part 2.ISO
  • Transfer part 1 to your PC and burn to dvd... thats it.

Just a note to add to Kero post...

If you are running nkpatcher you can just mount the ISO on the Hard Drive if you want to, modchip users, unfortunately the virtual mount won't work for you so you have to burn to DVD as Kero showed.

Seems that th egerman PAL Version have an extra copyprotection.

I read the Original on an Samsung (the one with the two holes in the tray) DVD from the box and it hangs at around 507 MB after nearly 2 hours.

I will start another try ... but it`s real strange.

I got bad news for you unfortunately, if you check the thread at xbox scene (link is on page before this) you will see evryone with samsung drives (at least the older type) gets the same problem when ripping. Either download the Spare release or try ripping on another xbox which has not got the old samsung drive.

edit.. I got the Spare release and it works fine.
