Does it work on modern systems without those glitches with lockpicking and what not?
What glitches? Played the game with no issues just a few months back on win7 64.
Recently, I tried this (W8 64) - and when you lockpicked or interacted with certain objects - you'd lose control. Something to do with VSYNC or something. I tried a variety of things, but never got it to work quite right. It's a known issue, by the way.
You're right, it's to do with vsync. If the framerate is too high then it sketches out, on ladders too, just force vsync or cap framerate at 60 and it'll work. Or .. well, it works fine on Win7x64, I don't know about Win8. Also make sure to have JohnP's pack and Sneaky Upgrade installed as it fixes the resolution and texture issues.

Thanks
I believe I tried forcing VSYNC, but I might have messed up. I didn't spend a lot of time with it.
I'll check out this new mod, as it sounds pretty great.

Casus, are you using d3doverrider for vsync?
It is the best tool for older games.
In addition, if you are on nv, prolly best to set the frameratelimiter as well to force 60fps or 58 ideally, but make sure you're on the latest drivers, as some previous versions disable vsync when using framelimiter.
Too bad the author cannot get paid work to keep updating it, msi and evga don't wanna invest in it..

Yeah, I sometimes use d3doverrider when games ignore my control panel settings. I do seem to remember getting the game to stop fucking up during lockpicking - but the performance suffered a lot.
I don't really remember, and I think I was semi-drunk and was just on a nostalgia trip
It's really good, I tried it last week. Just follow the procedure carefully from the readme/description (since other fixes are required) and everything will be fine. Models are still low-poly sadly, but the textures are in glorious HD, quite impressive!
If you are unfamiliar with the mod, it gets rid of the loading zones outside of the tutorial and between-mission city hub.
Per the latest notes, pathfinding for AI has been improved, the nine main missions have been reworked, ambient fog has been reduced, and among the tweaks? You no longer have to steal Widow Moira’s inheritance on Expert level.
Noice!

In time, Thief 3 Gold will be integrated with the Sneaky Upgrade mod/unofficial patch, which you really should be playing with anyway. It brings oodles of improvements, like faster loading, adjustable field of view, better resolution support, a framerate limiter to stop things like lockpicking and ladder-climbing from wonking out. Sneaky will envelop a few other key mods too.
The Gold gang aren’t done yet, mind. Beyond fixing bugs, they plan to create Thief 1-style intro videos for missions, turn the tutorial into a proper mission on higher difficulties, tweak Garrett’s movement, and more
