While there is a current trend towards making "realistic" (i.e. ugly) women, I think a big part of the problem is that all the character head/face models in that video are shit. As I said above, it's really surprising how mediocre they are, especially in a pre-rendered marketing video.

The black guy in this video also looked shit.
Spoiler: | |
Clearly that model isn't as good as the one you posted, nor any of the one in the videos from years ago. Like I said, all the heads were mediocre, regardless of sex.

A lot of the character faces in that video look like they were made with the actual ingame tools as opposed to the actor likenesses shown in the Squadron 42 videos. It feels like they do not really care much about character faces you can pick on the Star Citizen side as most are terrible since you will end up having a helmet on most of the time.

They say this was their most profitable year yet. They've passed 400 million dollars in funding right now. Almost 80 million he says were in 2020. I doubt this kind of money makes the company be in any hurry to finish this.

They also said that once the game goes live they would stop selling real money ships, I guess instead they would sell the UEC in game currency like GTA to be used to buy the ships if you do not want to grind for them. But like you said they make so much now from a business standpoint just keep going at the same pace since people are still pouring money into the game.
One of the bigger SC streamers on Twitch just revealed how much he had spent on the game in the last 7 years as he had a magic number he had to hit before he would reveal it and it ended up being 50 thousand dollars. He did say some of it was from viewer donations and he does do a lot of giveaways but still that is a crazy amount but he did say it all was considered business expenses for tax purposes over the years thanks to being a Twitch Partner.

Cause if they actually managed to make a decent game out of this the potential for money making ala. Fortnite etc. through continuous purchases like skins, exclusive gear and bonus subscriptions would be infinitely higher
Right now it's still niche despite everything. Not everyone who wants to play a game like this is, given the reputation and it's alpha status.
All they need is mainstream appeal.

This will end up as the biggest hype bubble waiting to burst, or the biggest scam in the industry.

I think biggest hype bubble was Cyberpunk. Just because Star Citizen made so much money, doesn't mean it's overhyped. The majority of people just moved on. Chris has his dedicated followers that keep throwing money at this.

Its not just old players. He says in this news letter there were 400 000 new accounts added this year. Their active monthly and daily users grew by 40 and 70% since last year.
For some reason they got 17 million dollars just now in november. Its pretty insane to grasp that over 400 million dollar figure. This is the most expensive game in the entire history by a large ammount. Its probably the most expensive piece of entertainment out of all, moveis, music, everything.
Its gonna be a project for life for Chris at this rate. An infinite source of money

But can you trust the relevance of those numbers? There was a free to play week not too long ago, developers/publishers usually take advantage of such events to bolster the statistics.

I don't believe for a second its making that much money in any legitimate sense.
400,000 new signups, sure. But how many actually paid anything? At this rate, Elite Odyssey is going to be better developed by the time SQ42 is in even an alpha...

i know how this is gonna end, dont know when, but once IRS gets a few tip offs, and they vet the company finances, its all gonna get confiscated and shut down, there is no way he resisted the temptation of not paying all taxes n shit, and he has plenty of enemies of people who have been defrauded by this guy who finnally woke up from the scientoligiy spending spree they got caught up in
they gonna fire everyone, sell all assets and he will buy himself a get out of jail free card with all the backers money and all those virtual pixels will go POOF

Absolutely sure they are paying taxes for every backer's dollar. They are not opted as a charity so no reason not to. But still 270 millions is an enormous sum for game development. Especially when they don't spend 1/3rd of it for marketing, like Rockstar did with GTA V.

They're at 402 million with the 2 investments they had recently. Not 270 million

Haha, that letter is a goldmine. I especially like this bit:
Quote: | It is better to treat Squadron 42 like a beautifully wrapped present under the tree that you are excited to open on Christmas Day, not knowing exactly what is inside, other than that it’s going to be great. |

Quote: | What we’re most proud of this year isn’t the revenue, it’s the fact that we provided an appealing enough value proposition to compel hundreds of thousands of new players to invest their time to try out our game. It’s the fact that we had enough content and enough of an enduring experience to retain a high percentage of those players for weeks and months afterwards. It’s the fact we were engaging and exciting enough with new and revamped gameplay to bring back hundreds of thousands of lapsed backers. When we pull back to regard 2020 in its entirety, all of this shows us that we are making tremendous strides and moving Star Citizen ever closer to its ultimate goal. When we’re playing every day and mired in the day-to-day, it can be hard to see the forest for the trees. But we wanted to arm you, the community that has supported us along the way, with the perspective that we possess internally when we see all the holistic metrics in aggregate that tell us the game is enjoying its healthiest year ever in growth and engagement. |
Whoah. Did I miss something? This is a game with gameplay and content now?
