Since Ram is so expensive these days, I suppose 16GB should be enough until prices come down.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Only laptops for gaming I'd ever order from is anything from Sager/Clevo/Whoever else buys their laptops from Sager and rebrands them

Since when is 2000+ € a "middle of the road" laptop price... wait, don't even want to know Laughing
And I'll look into sager/clevo but those don't seem likely to find in the UK...

What about getting one from here
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptops/

or some other site/shop like that instead of buying a branded laptop from amazon, etc?

Try XMG laptops, they are rebranded clevo machines.

Yes, grab a Ryzen 4000 Laptop paired with a 1650/ti or 2060 (non max-q) if you want to game. Are there 1440p laptops? 4K is absolute overkill and 1080p has barely enough space to display everything I need Sad

It's not gonna be special laptop or the level of the xps 15, but It may be enough for most stuffs I need for handeland computer, and I am already mostly gaming at home or streaming.

Back in this fookin thread.

Looking for a middle of the road laptop, no gaeming or workfriendly stuff. So far the lists I've been seeing for 2020 single out the HP envy and Acer Swift 3, I'm more inclined toward the latter.
Any other suggestions? Looking for something aroud 800€ max, with a discrete GPU (no onboard garbagio, thank you very much) and a solid CPU.

It's over, the nightmare is finally over! So Much Win
 Spoiler:

What a mess, where to begin? Maybe next time spend more than the minimum on a "gayeming" laptop? Or monitor it closely so shit like this never happens again.
So add an i7-7700 runni- er, throttling at 100ºc frequently + back exaust + stiff hinges + couple of years and you'll end up breaking the shitty plastic where the hinges are screwed on. Ordered a new top cover, because poor design on this also means that the hinges are only attached to one of the covers. But holy shit:
- the touchpad is GLUED on the top cover (was able to pull it out in one piece though, but it was one hell of a fight)
- some unknown board GLUED to the top cover too, but after following the wires it turns out that it's not even connected...?
- turns out that the bottom cover is also fucked upon closer inspection, but it's only some cosmetic damage and it doesn't quite close the gaps correctly at the back
- and all this using the double heatpipe cpu cooler, can't even imagine how hot this shit gets with the single one Laughing

Still need to try and loosen the hinges with a small enough wrench, use better thermal paste than coolermaster high performance and try and "polish" the cpu heatsink with some very very fine sandpaper to see if it's possible to turn on turbo for the CPU again. If not, it will stay off with Throttlestop 8.70 while using RLECViewer for more aggressive fan control. It's a bit depressing to have an i7 running at 2.7GHz vs 3.GHz turbo mode, but so far it's the only way to guarantee that it stays below 95ºc.
This shit isn't even mine, if it was I'd give it a hand trying to see if it would be possible to undervolt the CPU while keeping turbo mode on but I'm not that bored anyway.

POS Clevo 850! Mad

What is venting on bottom cover like?, if poor, is there no way to modify it yourself whilst you have the unit apart?

IIRC even without the bottom cover in place and with turbo mode active it still hit 100ºC under heavy load. I'll test it again when replacing the thermal paste.

Are fans loud @ MAX? You could throw a step up voltage regulator in there and run them at a slightly higher voltage (have done this before on a laptop I used to have), thus increasing the airflow, perhaps placing it where that useless unknown board was instead Wink Easy to do, and cheap as chips. You could also possibly replace the fans with quality alternatives, if the design allows you do do so? 5-15 degrees can make all the difference, so it may be worth doing Smile

Very thin copper shims & liquid metal (although not a job for the faint hearted) would be a benefit also.

They're a bit loud and might be a bit busted up if that's what you're getting at (then again maybe not what you mean if you're thinking of overvolting them into spinning even faster ). But I'm not sure I could replace just the fans:

Ideally higher quality thermal paste and a nice smooth polished heatpipe surface are going to help. Then I'll see where we go from there.

And now the correct advice: don't bother with a "gaming laptop", buy a console or computer instead if you want games.

---
Buy a Dell XPS or Macbook Pro, they are built well, have good performance and power draw. Intel GPU or APU if its an option is the best option for a laptop, else you get an overheating, noisy as fuck, battery draining laptop.

I'm now trying to convince my old man to buy a HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec1017np (AMD Ryzen 5 4600H/16GB/512GB SSD/GTX 1650Ti/15,6'') for 700€. And not for me but for himself Razz
Even if it will be used mostly for internet browsing, with a little luck that shit will last 12 years like my last Acer or ~20 like the ol' HP DV5000 that I still have up and running.

Looking for a laptop too. Just for playing emulated games really (PSX, PS2, GC etc) and watching movines when i'm on the slow shift at work. It's hard finding one as there is always one or another fault with them.
