Interesting take on the Xbox vs. PS5 controller.
Quote: | The DualSense is an impressive piece of tech, but does it really add anything to a game? I would argue that the DualSense's haptics, while interesting, put an extra layer of distance between the player and the game. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X's controller stays laser-focused on what's important: the action on screen and your connection to it. |
Quote: | Where the DualSense falls short
Perhaps I'm just set in my ways, but after playing both Astro's Playroom and Spider-Man: Miles Morales with the DualSense, I don't quite get the appeal. The subtlety of the haptic effects is interesting, but it doesn't integrate seamlessly with the games. When I'm tapping along a metallic surface in Astro's Playroom, I stop to consider how the DualSense feels in my hands. When I'm web-slinging through Harlem, I wonder why the right trigger is putting up so much resistance against my finger.
In other words: Every cool thing the DualSense does takes me out of the game, at least for a few seconds.
To get philosophical for a moment, the purpose of a controller is to put as little distance between you and the game as possible. Just as a pianist needs to read sheet music, a gamer needs to focus on the screen. Stopping to consider your input is jarring. It's why great controllers make their layouts easy to memorize. It's also, I'd argue, why great controllers tend toward minimalism rather than cramming in a kitchen sink's worth of features.
The DualSense has innovative haptics, a built-in mic/speaker, a completely redesigned appearance - it's not the kind of thing you can just pick up and immediately intuit. Besides, the DualShock 4 had some legitimate problems - the oversized, underutilized touchpad being one of them - that the DualSense has done nothing to fix.
While Mike and other journalists have argued that developers could do some truly remarkable things with the DualSense in the future, I wonder how many of those features will draw players further into their game worlds, and how many will make them stop and say "Oh, that's cool." The latter can wear out its welcome very quickly. |

I can see it being a distraction.... but only at first when it's just a new sensation you're not used to.
That stuff can only help with immersion like VR haptics.
Of course some people dont give a fuck about immersion and would just be annoyed that there is resistance in their trigger
but surely you can just turn that off right?

I mean I get why it's irritating for some people as it's new tech/take on what used to be, so naturally some will have to adjust to that.
The technology is really intriguing, but I also always preferred the Xbox 360 and onwards controllers, I also thought the PS4 ones hurt my hands and feel like it was just too wide apart or weird (not only because of the touchpad). The simple and straightforward design from the PS1/PS2 era was peak controller design for Sony for me personally, didn't feel wrong or interfered with my gameplay, just straight up what it's meant to be, controlling the game.
PS5, optics aside feels like picking up from the old ps3 concept of the boomerang controller, which seems hideous and uncomfortable even looking at it now. No clue why anyone would want to go back to it, if it sat in a stand all day, maybe from a design standpoint, but for gaming?
Xbox has been doing the right move, they often can't score with the console itself, but the controller has always been dead on point, not changing it much so people also don't have to adapt to a new one, giving the same control feedback as the previous generation.

Yes, there is a system-wide accessibility setting which allows you turn off the tension of the triggers.
I don't know specifically about the vibrations, I wouldn't mind them, and enjoy them on the Xbox Elite and Switch, but I would definitely disable the tension on the triggers. I am not looking to literally fight with the controls when playing video games.

What makes it interesting? This guy feels it takes him out of the game, while others feel it makes the games more immersive as it connects you physically with that you see on screen.
Try it out and if you dislike it, disable it.

Heard the PS5 has got a few issues on launch day (USA) and not sure if the "Day 1 FW patch" fixes the firstone of em below but..
-Connecting an external HDD to the PS5 might cause a database message to appear, but fucking up the SSD inside. Not sure if it's only when you wanna play or transfer PS4 GAMES into the PS5 or play such games from the extHDD. Not confirmed if it also happens if you JUST transfer PS4 SAVEGAMES into the PS5.
-Rest mode to Wake up might sends a black screen
-Random shutdowns
Hopefully they solve all these issues before the EU date to prevent anymore troubles. Got mine preordered for weeks

So far it has been one shill after another. What is interesting is someone having a different opinion. One, that I tend to agree with, too.

I assume you call them shills because they got hardware from Sony...
In any case, I assume you don't own a PS5, so why do you agree with the opinion?
The old adage of don't knock it till you try it seems appropriate.

When all of them are parroting the same Sony talking points, they are shills. That's my definition.
I base my opinion on my personal taste, on the HD rumble, that is pretty similar, and already exists on Nintendo Switch, and the Xbox Elite haptics, which are way more precise than a normal controller. It adds very little, and if it goes the same as Switch, will go completely unused in but a few token titles, just like the touch area of the PS4 controller, which the same retarded shills touted as "revolutionary" and "game changer", or the "Sixaxis" on the PS3 before that.

They might be "parroting" the same talking points because it's difficult (impossible?) to explain in words/videos without actually feeling it. I'd say soon enough users who bought the console will chime in.
LeoNatan wrote: | will go completely unused in but a few token titles |
I tend to agree to that sentiment. I don't believe many developers outside Sony studios will have the time and finances to invest into this feature.

Even with Sony studios, I doubt it will be given the care and attention needed to achieve best results. For example, people area already saying that it's not used "properly" in Miles Morales, unlike Astro.

The new COD fully realised the DualSense features.
Also, PS is the most popular gaming platform by far.
I hope you’re wrong.

As usual in these kind of arguments, it's the ones who don't intend to get a PS5 who are slating, or claiming disinterest in, some of the DualSense features. Just so happens that it's the features of the controller that won't work on any other platform.
Funny, that.

Tactile feedback might improve immersion. That's on the basic level, I don't expect much beyond that. There might be some cases though where it can improve gameplay. For example, in racing games the ability to feel the traction of the wheels with the road and to feel when the rear begins to slip. I think some review of Dirt 5 mentioned something like that (maybe eurogamer).
In any case, being skeptical is a healthy approach but we are long before anyone could confidently claim this was a failed experiment.
I'd always rather have companies experiment than not experiment, as long as the features can be deactivated.

You don't even get 825 GB, it's 667 GB of available space. Non issue for me tho, I'm more worried about reports of both PS5 and XSX units not working, sew more then a few already.

My PS5 comes next week. In the mean time I’ve been getting to grips with the Serirs X, and despite it having more storage than PS5 I still ran out after 6 games. SIX FUCKING GAMES. Not looking forward to PS5 storage woes.
This generations biggest issue / mistake is storage. They should have found a better solution (eg two disks, one for primary games and another for games that make no use of the faster speeds (ie Warzone, the new COD, Fifa 21, etcetcetc).
And on the duel sense? I’m still excited. I play a lot of FPS and if implemented correctly there then I can absolutely see it significantly increasing immersion.

Jesus, that’s a dumpster fire experience. It boggles the mind how we have decades of user interface experience, and yet still we are incapable of creating a logical UI for such simple things. This is truly embarrassing.

lol but people can take a sec and see what they press on...
I saw a vid of someone getting the XSX Cold War disc version and on top it says both XSX and One X, but he only got the One X, so that's even worse situation. I guess we need to take notice as there are confusing stuff on both consoles.

Both sides are guilty for their shitty UIs, for sure.
In this case, why the fuck would anyone want the PS4 version of the game? Just doesn’t make a sense. Why is it even an option? Even after an upgrade, once there is an internet connection, the system should check the server, see there is an upgrade and download that.

If i'm not mistaken the PS5 gives you for some games both the PS4 and PS5 version, so essentially you get both versions for one, BUT yeah you're right, on PS5 i would expect that the main download option (and maybe the only option) should be... Dah the PS5 version!
Seems that both systems has their fair share of issues, shame really.
