Yes, just because he/she has it for like x amount of years? Well, if one wants to upgrade just because of that then it's fine it's his/her choice but I find that justification pretty dumb.

You know it's like buying a PC and then: why did you buy it? Because I can run checkdisk on it!

Normally you do an upgrade because there is an application (game) that is not running the way you want it. This is why I have asked what is the name of the application(s) that he/she wants to run, because some might require more CPU some might require GPU.

Like He/She wants to run borderlands 2 at 60FPS all the time maxed out, then I would say don't upgrade anything since no matter what you do it won't hit 60FPS all the time.

If so, what?

For playing. Apps and other things work fine.

Games don't run well or at setting I want to play and I often end up playing in window mode or fiddle with settings for 40-50 fps.

2600K + GTX 970. I could slot in 3080 but I saw like 30-40fps loss/heavy bottleneck. Embarassed So thinking to upgrade full PC and hoping it will last well for another decade like my current PC. Never had any experience with AMD stuff but 3600 seems to be super popular choice at the moment.

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

You know, sometimes we just want to upgrade our old stuff. What an truly outlandish thought.

Even I, who is anything but rich, lol, aim to upgrade my gpu every 2-3 years and my cpu every 3-5 years, at the least.

When you start playing games on medium, you know it's overdue Smile

I've been using my 2500k for 9,5 years Laughing (nice deal for less than 250$ back in the 2011) and although nowadays I don't play much I'm very happy with my upgrade. Especially with 3060/3070 upgrade in near future - i5 was even bottlenecking 1060 6GB.

Thanks. Any suggestion on cooler? I have working air cooler but not sure if it still work. Else plan to get Noctua NH-D15.

Ryzen 3600 + MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX good?

be quiet! Pure Rock 2 is more than enough for the 3600. It can even handle the 3700x easily, btw.

They are already pretty much on par with intel in this regard, AMD has very good IPC, only problem they have currently is the memory latency due to chiplet design vs intel monolith core design, this is where intel wins if the game engine is shit.

So I got my "new" setup:

- MSI B450 Tomahawk Max for 60€ (used)
- 3600x for 125 € (used). I wanted (and still want) the 3700x, but for that price I had to take the 3600x now. Probably will always be able to sell it on for that price later.
- Crucial Ballistix 3200 Mhz / Cl16 RAM 16GB for 60 € (new)
- Pure Rock 2 fan for 30€ (new)

So overall 275 € for quite a decent update I think. As well as the possibility to upgrade to Zen3 or 3700x if I get a good price.

Cheers.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

My 3800x handles the wii emulator to play breath of the wild perfectly. Together with ascynchronous shader compilation I'm basically at 60FPS + all the time.

Most will run the same, some a bit worse and a few better.
As in: no need to worry much.

I forgot to ask above: Does anybody have experience with using Thermal Pads instead of Thermal paste?

I know it's slightly more expensive, but otherwise they seem to hold up and are way easier to install and not so messy?
