I don't know if there is enough going on with this game to justify a sequal, it just looks like ck2.
3d characters, some quality of life improvements, some new mechanics. That's about it.
They could also just improve ck2 graphics and continue expanding that game (or that's what they have done )
It almost seems there running out of ideas.
They have been out of ideas for some time. Even the last CK2 expansion and the EUIV expansions were based on ideas first introduced by modders. Every single one of the new features shown in the CK3 videos have been in mods at some point.

my guess is that they reached some (engine) limitations that would make further development of ck2 problematic
For Sure. Still, previous paradox sequals had something new to ad.
Personally I would like them focus more on empire management so that it's fun to play even if you don't have big plans for conquering more of the map. I don't like the endgame in paradox titles when it's all about grabbing more land and managing bb rating cause there is little to do otherwise.
I wonder whether this will also have some sort of "challenge" to it, at least when one tweaks some settings. EU4/Stellaris are mildly challenging at least in the beginning of a game, but I didn't find that in CK2.

Yeah I suppose the more difficult starts (less prestigious noble title, less holdings, less heirs etc.) are good early on but once you learn how to game the system you're usually just fine even in those, barring some catastrophic RNG. I guess in a way CK2 already had such challenges, in form of its achievements, but integrating those further into the game somehow could be neat.
The problem with paradox games (HoI had the same), you always find a boat load of ways to cheese it.
So yeah I doubt there'd be much challenge to be had once you put some time into it.
Thanks! Vids are looking good and they've added more depth to old systems. How deep remains to be seen but I'm optimistic.
The stress system is a good improvement I believe. Should force you to play to your character's traits which could help with the challenge.
But how challenging the game is really depends on how good they can make the AI.
If there's one thing I'm hoping they improve it's the AI. Big part of how easy CK2 is because of how the AI works against itself. Either by marrying random lowborn couriers or by sending the better trait/stats sons off to become bishops and just leaving some shit trait son as heir. Or by sending the son off to become a bishop so that his 1 year old kid becomes heir to France when the current king is 60 and is afflicted with gout.
I don't think they'll be able to improve the AI much, but I do wish for it.
If the AI was less stupid, I think I could actually manage to stick to a tall playthrough, because as a vassal Duke, my liege always does dumb things that'll end up in a rebellion, his assassination, or some other thing that weakens the realm and I can't focus on building up my cities because of all the constant war that weakens the realm and makes it an easier target for claimants.
I will definitely pick this up at a later date. I enjoyed what I played of Crusader Kings II but I just don't like Paradox's "game mode"l of releasing the game and then overpriced DLC's, it feels like you are playing less than half of the game on release.
Yea, with paradox games, you gotta wait till they hit sale. There really isn't anything that that you should fear of missing out on. So as always, just wait. Not to mention bug fixes and such with patchings.
While I agree that these are not the most trustworthy bunch, the reviewer from RPS for example has played a huge amount of CK2 and has a good amount of knowledge. Also these were the only reviews that are up right now.
