I'm really sad that there is literraly no good space sim game out there.
NMS is a game that I just can't get into. The randomly generated creatures are laugalby bad and cringy. And it's one of the rare game where I just can't stand the graphics. It's just an ugly game.
To top it off, it's mostly a crafting game with elements of flying ships.
SC is a scam.
ED has such a big potential, but it's stuck in a limbo. There is nothing to do in that game. Fly around, scan, and grind. It looks like this update won't change that. Insteaad of just flying and scanning from orbit, we will be able to do that on foot.
The game is drastically missing some quality content updates, storylines, narrative, hand-crafted missions and planets, alien species, and just far better economy and rewards for playing it.
Its a wast, but shallow game

I am saying, that I find NMS to be a boring game. Why do I have to give an example of another game "of the genre" to prove that I find that game boring?`
I find both of these games boring. |
If its impossible to name anything better in the genre, then perhaps you don't even like the genre? If you don't compare then how would anyone know what your preference is or if you're just dreaming up some better game in the genre?
I do however know you've said you like Empyrion (which is like a super poor man's version of NMS tbh..) I just found your argument odd when you do seem interested in the genre.
It's also funny when people have played a game for 100h+ and then claim "it's a crap game" or a boring game (not saying you have, but i've seen such posts).. its one thing hating a game after 2h and then stop playing, and quite a different thing of getting tired of a game after e.g 100h... which i absolutely can see happen with NMS.

not sure why you would care about the animals, it's not a big part of the game anyways, like in most games. I think the graphics is a mixed bag, but for a game of this scope i find it and its performance quite impressive..
i do wish there was more mission variety + ground combat with bandits..
other than that i'm pretty happy with it, i can't name anything better in this small genre, i've spent more time with this game than almost anything else.. as someone who's been into gaming for 30+ years (and getting bored of it) its quite an accomplishment. only rimworld has captured my interest more.

What genre are we talking about? Because NMS is hardly a space sim.

I agree, it's not.. it's a open world (with big letters!) survival sim i would say. i've played quite a few open world survival games and this is the only one i can stand.

Which was my case. After 40+ hrs. got tired and lost motivation to play it through. It was the lack of objectives or story or missions, whatever you want to call it. Besides that, game was stellar.

Quoted for truth. Which, incidentally, would be a space sim game like ED or NMS with proper written content.

Well since you want to argue...
Empyrion is a million times better.
Poor man's NMS my ass, lol.
Having a near infinite number of randomly generated planets and animals, doesn't makes a game deep or meaningful.
It just makes it an ocean an inch deep...

nah, you don't have real arguments so far, you have opinions (though you never go into details, so its pretty useless).
I doubt anyone is arguing that X amounts of planets or animals makes or breaks a game.. it's certainly adding to the exploring aspect of it though, which some might enjoy..
@jackbomb hmm i don't know. i actually do like the "create your own story" style they have.. if this was a well written, story rich game it probably also would be very linear and no where near as big. I just think it needs e.g more fun combat, and especially good ground combat and more interesting ground missions.

What kind of argument is that?
"You're wrong, because your opinion isn't valid to me as an argument"
You're clearly a NMS fanboy, so I see that any discussion is pointless.
PS: NMS sucks balls.

? i've never said you're wrong, i was just curious why you prefer something over something else, i was interested if you could come up with some type of deeper reasoning than "boring!!1" or "sucks balls!!". but yeah, i guess that's a bit beyond your intelligence. Sometimes i do assume that i'm discussing with adults here, not with angry 14-16 year olds..
I'm not much of a fanboy overall, i've criticized that game tons, i was one of the first here to say the game would suck, and it absolutely did at release. i've criticized it (=giving constructive criticism) on the Steam forums too, a lot, and i've also gotten some of my wishes for it granted and implemented.
It's far from a perfect game, but in this genre, yeah, there's nothing even close, imo (ofcourse). It's a vast, though flawed universe, still love exploring the planets, seeing what the the generator has come up with..

I think overall these games needs a lot of cool gadgets to buy and loot to find and/or buy.
Something that drives you to 1) explore and/or 2) to make money to buy these gadgets (weapons, new means to explore, ships, upgrades, pets/droids etc).
For NMS there's a few things that are cool to get or find, but it's also often a missed opportunity where it's just given for free, or there isn't upgrades for it to get (instead you'll have to use mods).
I don't even mind grinding if it means e.g i can explore a new area or planet or get a new ship, fun gadget etc.

I gave you plenty of reasons.
One of the main reason why Empyrion is way ahead of NMS, is that exploring is actually fun and rewarding. You can find weapons and armor and blocks, that you wouldn't have access, too. You can dismantle or take over entire bases. etc. Only someone who hasn't played Empyrion, doesn't know, just how addictively fun it is to play. I am actually holding myself from playing right now, because I know, once I start, I wont stop for several hundred hours, and I have a lot of games to finish already

Apart from boring and sucks balls, no you haven't.
See? Wasn't that hard.. It was all i was asking for. I have played it for a few hours, and tbh probably not enough to say it's "a poor man's version of NMS", but that's the impression i got after a few hours. i still think the controls needs some work and I've been holding off too... infiltrating bases is something i've been wanting for NMS.. there's at least abandoned ships to explore now, with enemies to fight, has kind of a cool space horror vibe to it.
I'm pretty sure NMS is overall deeper than Empyrion though. What i've gathered on the Steam forums for the game is for SP = NMS, for MP = Empyrion. I'm not that into MP..

Well, in all fairness, one could argue the same about the 1st and 2nd Elites. I only played number 2 back when I was in the Navy, as the primary source of entertainment during a 6th month cruise. And honestly what you are listing there was pretty much all you could do back then. But the difference from then to now is back then it was new and fresh as I don't believe other than the first Elite, there were other games on its scale. We had never seen a game like that before as vast as it was and it was just a huge sandbox to fly in. There was no plot within it, nor were there any pre-scripted missions. You'd explore space while trading legally or illegally, carrying out missions for the military, ferrying passengers from system to system, engaging in piracy or any combination of the above. Ultimately, Elite 2 could not be completed or "won." Yet people loved it.
I agree with what you are saying. I'd love to have more storylines and missions. I'd also like more AI traffic. I swear there was a lot more flying around Elite 2 than there are in ED.

Game servers are currently down so good luck everyone. But at least you can download it.
Btw, are there griefers or cheaters in this? If yes, then it's gonna be a bad time to play for the next few months. |
It's not quite as easy.. but yes, cheating is a thing... Due to the p2p nature of instances, there have been the usual cheats you'll find in most p2p games but to be honest unless you hang about the PvP haunts (Jameson Memorial for example) in Open Mode, there's really nothing to actually gain by cheating other than imaging your enormous e-penis expanding ever onward...

When I played I just went into the galaxy and explored. If you go into an area with heavy neutron-star/black-hole population and you're the first to discover that place, you can get hundreds of millions for a couple day's work.
Of course you need a couple mills to buy and kit out a decent explorer ship to begin with. Plus I have no idea if they nerfed the exploration payouts since I last played, but back then it was pretty good money. AnarchoS wrote: | Is there a way to jump more than one system at a time? | What do you mean? You can buy better jump drives that get you farther in one jump, but you cannot "skip" a jump if that's what you mean.
Plus there should be a kind of fuel-economy setting in the map to calculate routes. If you tell it to be fuel-efficient, it will make lots of small jumps, if you want to get there faster it will calculate at your max jump distance, but then you'll have to make either fuel-stops along the way or install a fuel-scoop and harvest it from stars when running low (that's how people are able to stay out in the wild indefinitely).
Plus there's neutron-star boosting, but that's for covering HUGE distances, like when travelling to Colonia or Sagittarius A* or some other far away destination.
