Depends on the players inside the server, as far as I know. I remember people in reddit posting images how good 3.1 runs on the test universe (that had no more than 5-6 players at the same time) with 60+ FPS. Then it hit the live universe and everyone wanting to try it and you could barely get 30 FPS.
I think this public Alpha, Beta etc just slow down the development too much instead of speed it up. Because now after every new version release they have to focus on optimizing the performance for the people who play it instead of just do all the features and think about performance after release of the next Beta stage or even full release. It's even worse that they have Public Test Universe inside a fucking Public Alpha. Or at least do less frequent live updates, like one or 2 per year. But now everyone get used to the 3 months updates (not that they ever release them on time anyway) and players will go mass rage mode if there are updates only once in a year... The whole development planning is screwed no matter what Chris Roberts and CO do now.

Yes. The curse of early access
You spend too much ressources, including time, on trying to provide playable builds instead of racing to your goals and only then making the game playable.
But their income relies on playable builds so.. the game is doomed either way.

I wonder if World of Warcraft was made this way. It would've probably made much more money for Blizzard since everyone was hungry for Warcraft at that time. But would it have been ever finished? Even at release there were bugs and performance issues. It took them 5 years to make that game without having to worry with building stable Alpha/Beta versions. Would've prolly taken them 10 years with Early Access such as Star Citizen....

Well... most MMO's kind of have something in place. A test realm and Alpha's/Beta's. Blizz has it as well. So I can't say its a good excuse.
But yeah some seem to fall in the pit that is public testing. M&B Bannerlord seems to be really stuck in the process, but... SC I just think that its more the combination of heaps of cash and Chris Roberts being Chris Roberts. The more you read about his previous projects the more this makes sense.

Me and a friend tried it out. Ran out of things to do in 4 days, well ran out of things we could drag ourselves to keep wanting to do.
If you strip away the loyalty people have, sunken cost fallacy they use, and fanboyism I can sum up what we feel we ourselves came to as the conclusion on it: Gotta catch em all SpaceShip edition.
Thats it, thats all there really is to strive for, do off the shelf bare bones throw away fetch missions on par with a late 90's MMO's missions to earn cash, to buy ships to do those missions in with a new ship to stare at.
The missions have no depth, purpose, impact, meaning or direction to them. They are literally randomly generated fluff missions meant to give you a reason to earn ingame money to keep you busy long enough to buy another ship.
We tried missions, mining, pvp, pve, FPS fighting. And its all so very basic and shallow. its the mechanics of all those put in, with JUUUST enough actual meat of content to not call it a system mechanics proof of concept.
If this game started a 1 ago, and alpha started 6 months ago I could at least say it feels like a good basis for a game in a few years down the road. But for 7 years of funding...its disappointing.
It has a very rough vibe of they did 5% of all the content and gameplay parts, and then went and spent the rest of the time doing eye candy and ship design.

https://kotaku.com/eight-years-into-development-star-citizen-fans-are-inc-1844551057
Quote: | It’s now nearly August, and fans haven’t seen or heard a thing, prompting Reddit posts and threads on the game’s own forums complaining about this, and asking, sometimes in less polite terms than this, what’s up.
In response, CIG released a new statement that says...they’re now working on a new roadmap, but that it’s not ready, and that “because that is still very much in development, we can’t share as much about it as [we] would like”. Hilariously, the statement winds up with:
While it’s not quite ready, it’s currently top priority on the web team’s current projects. In the immediate future, we plan to deliver the following communications:
Give an explanation of the goals of our new Roadmap and what to expect from it
Show a rough mockup of the proposed new Roadmap
Share a work in progress version of the Roadmap for at least one of our core teams
And then finally transition to this new Roadmap
Please note that last month Star Citizen’s funding drive, which began in 2012, passed the $300 million mark. And that in 2018 I wrote a post about Squadron 42 which ended with Cloud Imperium saying “we will publish the full roadmap to Squadron 42’s release in December”. |
Roadmap for the... Roadmap
The grift continues... xD

I got a copy of the Star Citizen Squadron 42 bundle recently for free and it can be fun and looks great but I am still not sure I would ever spend any of my own money towards it.
The upcoming 3.10 patch really will make some people that spent thousands of dollars on their virtual ships maybe question that decision though since they are adding almost all the ships to the in game stores for credits and the prices on a lot are low compared to the real dollar value as a $400 ship that was sought after as being limited is 2.4 million in game which a lot of players can make in a day mining or doing cargo trading. I am sure in beta or whenever this ever gets released that those in game ship prices will really balloon though since RSI is hoping to gain Rockstar Sharkcard like money as they are already selling in game currency now for the released version at $5 for 5000 credits.

And the backers are like a fucking religious cult, it reminds me of those crazies who donate to televangelists, so that they can afford a 2nd private jet.

I really cannot see how anyone plays this more than a week much less how they KEEP getting more money from those people.
In 4-5 days I was bored out of my mind, and that's WITH me and my friends realllly trying to drink the kool aid during that time. Giving it all the benefit of the doubt we could and convincing ourselves that "Yea! this is fun!" in our heads.
If you have ran around a static station, and then carried a cardboard box onto your ship to move it to another station..you have experienced 1/2 the gameplay. The other half is doing that same thing, but in a cave or dog fighting some of the most basic AI in throw away pointless encounters that mean..nothing really gameplay context wise.

DX that is longer than I, for me it was always an hour or two before uninstall.
Sure it looks nice, but its clunky and nothing of worth is there to keep playing.

i would invent legislation for these kind of activities - crowdfunding projects would need to deliver final product let's say in 5 years. If not, then funders would receive back twice as money they funded the project. It's the same as buying a house, if i pay upfront deposit for my intentions to buy a house, then it's up to house seller to hold his end of the bargain. If not, then he pays back me twice. I know that this fraud "Star citizen" is extremely rare, but even then it needs some boundaries. Because now how it looks from developers view? "If i finish a product soon, then i will receive x amount money and after that i'm done - no more y cash flow." And that's why now in this "Fraud Citizen" situation developers are getting neverending flow of money without providing any real product. They even don't need to end it ever because there is no legislation for that. There will be always new dumb backers because "developers" throw a rare and flashing bone of never coming product.

It's not like a normal preorder (game, house, car or whatever) at all. With Kickstarter projects it's the worst between investing and preordering. At least in investing you have chance to make profit at success. Here, even if the game is finished and released, you win nothing back other than to play the "kewl" game, of course {or sell your account on the black market perhaps). And in usual preorder you can still get all or part of your money back while here you won't get shit because the product has been advertised as "risky investment". Tho again you can sell your account at the black market before it loses all value.
I think the only interesting thing to do in this "game" as of now is to walk around the bases or bigger ships. It's fascinating how they made such enormous ships such as the Reclaimer or Carrack. But nothing else right now. Missions are boring, mining is a bit interesting for about 30 mins but since you can't do anything with it other than sell the ores for peanuts it's stupid, trading is same, dogfighting is lacking everything.
It's just a tech demo. There is no game right now so don't try to look at it as one.
