I have a huge "phobia" of dentists and I have to go a visit one this Wednesday Sad.

I feel pain in one of my molars and I feel some pain in my lymph nodes below my jaw, I'm kinda ashamed to say that I haven't visited a dentist since 2010, but I generally didn't have any issues with my teeth, I'm using the proper precautions, wash and floss regularly, use mouthwash etc.

I'm really scared since I had terrible experiences in my childhood, please tell me that things are way better now and technology is more advanced, a couple of people told me that they went recently and they did not feel any pain, but stil... Crying or Very sad

I also have dental fear, had it my entire life. Though the past years I've done better with it (My wife is a dental hygienist) through just biting the bullet and going regularly.

My fear was because of the experience of two shit dentists in the past. I also kept years away from visiting the dentist. Try to find a good one. One that actually takes into account you have dental fear (my dentist does and so does my wife). And DO say you have dental fear, they are schooled for dealing with that these days.

And yes, its all became better over the years. Its harder to find shit dentists these days. Don't be afraid to ask for anaesthetics, paste or needle. My dentist was an inexperienced one/just out of school and he was better than the ones I had in the past.

So expect to be nervous, sick even but bite the bullet and get it done. Postponing it will just make it so that you have more pain, work and visits later on. Better to avoid that and the extra costs from something small turning into something bigger.

Almost always when I visit a dentist I have a conversation about not having anesthesia or getting it when it hurts. But when it hurts it's always too late for that. Myabe I have high pain treshold or diabetes and my nerve endings are fucked dunno.

But contrary to you guys I find visits at dentist relaxing. In the last couple of years I had one root canal treatment - which was borked and badly done and it ended in sinuses inflammation. But apart from that - two broken teeth, replaced old silver filling with new one and pulled two teeth.

Hold on there it's not as bad, especially with anesthesia (if you are not afraid of needles;) ).

Thanks!

I will definitely bite the bullet and hopefully after I see that there is nothing to fear, I will start going regularly.

I'm definetely gonna ask for anaesthetics, I'm not afraid of needles or such, so at least there is that Laughing

In 2016, I had to have a root canal procedure made. anaesthetics barely worked, so she had my tooth bathe in an anaesthetic bath while drilling. It was almost of no help, because the nerve got so inflammed it couldn't be put to rest without anything outside her arsenal.
And she had to do the whole procedure as-is.

She was sweating and asking me if she should stop. I asked (or rather "chu hoo it, conhinoo" Laughing ) her to continue because I knew it was the only way out of the otherwise constant and lingering pain.

I left litteral claw marks on the chair, I was trembling like a little bitch. I never was in so much pain in my life.

But I sucked it up, because she went fast and hard, and it was over, well, in a matter of 2/3 minutes? Then it all went away, and it never bothered me again.

I hope (and I sure you won't) be faced with such odds. But if so, just take it. Better than suffer all the time!

My dentist is a 30 something year old really good looking woman, so there is that.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

what pisses me off the most is my healthcare provider never asked me why i never handed in any dentist cost or visit receipts for years

these bastards can clearly tell when someone isnt doing the smart thing for sometimes very understanding reasons, yet keep their mouths shut . and then their slogan on their website and in their mails is : "how are u doing"

when in reality it is : " how is your money doing"

but oh boy, they called me a ton when i was in between jobs and they didnt get their money automaticly anymore

fucking wankers, i need a gun to my head to visit these fucking sadists cause of also very bad experiences

My lasts few visits it helped a ton telling them upfront of the phobia and asking them to keep talking to me during the procedure every step of the way, and when i raise my hand they know they need to suck the huge pool of spit developing in my mouth from the stress every few mins or so so i can breathe again in comfort lol

oh and for the love of god, dont expect them to tell u anything when it comes to ur future procedures or they barely communicate with predecessors for info, u have to ask them everything. any doubts, ASK , do not assume anything with them cause they dont think ahead for u, they just think job done, next cash cow into the seat when ur not a regular

so once ur one painfull tooth is done FORCE them to tell u how many more holes they saw and make appointments, get it done, we are fucking apes when it comes to dentistry and cant fix shit while the teeth just dacay even just from fruit juice these days ... so every delay is a tooth a t risk and the costs of replacing teeth are a wallstreet rip off still

its 2020 and we still pulling teeth, how fucking sad is that, once a tiny hole has formed, time will destroy it no matter how much u floss or brush

I plan to tell them immediately about my issues and hopefully everything will be okay, although I’m still dreading it as of right now Sad

What kind of shit place are you going to pickup?

Over here. They always tell me about possible issues, future procedures and plan check ups with me. My dentist constantly asks if I'm fine or need a break Also gives detailed steps on what he's about to do.

Hell, they even tell me which area I need to brush better.

Oh god that is the worst. I don't have any fear and it annoyed me to hell. "JUST GET THE FUCK ON WITH IT", but all you can do is "yorgllgll *thumbs up* ".

But guys, I can understand the stress and apprehension. Like Morph said, just ask to be briefed and/or vocaly helped during the whole thing. My sister is like that, and it helped her relax. Also ask the mirror on top to be put aside (I personaly like to see what's happening, but hey).

These are professionals who should take their patient's will into account, and if they seem bothered, look for an other pratictionner, because it's not only quite understandable, but common.

Hehe I can get that, they only do that for people with dentist fear though. It's less with the regular folk. As my wife explained it: it's to put a sense of control into the patients hand, makes them more relaxed.

That totally makes sense, and it's a good way to go about it. But when you have a patient that's just mildly annoyed by it all and wants to get it over with, the first 18 and associated short Cthulhu chants should be enough of a hint.

That old dental witch did a hell of a fucking job though Everything Went Better Than Expected

I had some pain in a molar and it turned out part of the tooth had rotted away and it had to be pulled out.

The dentist got his pliers out and I'm not joking, he really went to town on that tooth. He kept moving back to wipe the sweat from his forehead. He was really putting a lot of effort into trying to get it out.

Anyway, eventually the tooth broke and he had to try and get the roots out. He got most of it out but there is still a bit of root left in there now that is only just starting to become loose. I think I might be able to pull it out soon

Good luck with your appointment Smile

Ask for a diazepam or similar, it will at least help with the anxiety. Most dentists here will give you a mild tranquilizer if your anxiety level/phobia is through the roof.

I have risen Laughing

Everything went great, I still can’t believe it.

My dentist was shocked that I only have 2 problematic teeth despite not going to the dentist for 10 years. I explained the situation to him and asked for an anesthetic and we started working on one of them and I didn’t feel a thing.

He removed the one nerve that was still alive and I need to go next week so we can finish the procedure, but I’m feeling way better about the whole thing now.

Let this be a lesson to everyone that is still scared of going to the dentist, it really is better now and I’m not lying to give you fake courage, because I was scared shitless yesterday. Don’t do my mistake and go asap when you feel pain.

WRONG!! DO NOT WAIT FOR PAIN

remember, they took ur nerve out now, u will not feel pain anymore, ever in that tooth, aka a hole can start growing without u ever kinowing it untill its too late or it disintegrates

go every year , period

The whole food industry is designed and getting away with allowing to rot your teeth with the sticky sugars/carbs sticking to ur teeth and in between providing the energy needed for caries ( the food and energy carries needs to survive in ur mouth), and u have to get checked every year to prevent/fix the well documented damage the food industry is ALLOWED doing to them Sad In essense toothpaste and dentists visits was completely a reaction and necesarry byproduct to the corrupted food industry impact on health

toothpaste and brushing wasnt on many peoples minds untill coca cola exploded in populrity after ww2 with add agencies and marketing campaigns , their sugar drink caused everyones teeth to start rotting at an alarming stupendous pace and it wasnt untill like 15-20 years later even the army told their soldiers to brush in vietnam ...

brushing alone is TOTALY insufficient, flossing with fluor floss is the only way to protect urself seriously, just test it urself, brush ur teeth two times, flos after and see how much shit still comes out of ur mouth attached to the wires

and to prove my point, animals in the wild dont get holes in their teeth unless they are fed with human foods, the only exception is the honey bear (honey= pure sticky sugar) i think i remember when i dug into this fucking cespool of kapitalism > human health and wellbeing and how they copy pasted textbook marketing tricsk and ploys like bribe docters and cause confusion and chaos marketing tactics from the tabacco industry
