Maybe it's the rose tinted glasses, but I thought what I played was considerably less tactical than ye olde Commandos. I hope it opens up later on, I stopped at the bridge mission.

You're not wrong, the Commandos series (especially Commandos 2) required more micro-management in general and also had the inventory/backpack system to take into account, though one could argue that those mechanics made it more cumbersome than it needed to be.

From what I've played, Desperados 3 is almost like a carbon copy of the original Desperados in terms of features, with a more modern presentation/tone and a more responsive controlling method that gets rid of some of the ol' junk while introducing some useful stuff like the paused strategic showdown. The level design is rock-solid and gets more complex as one progresses, it's essentially the perfect sequel as far as faithfulness goes. These guys clearly care about the genre and perfectly understand the mechanics that make it engaging in the first place which is very rare these days. I hope Commandos can receive a similar respectful treatment in the future, but...with Kalypso one never really knows.

Nobody mentioned the replay yet, which is a brilliant feature as well. Was this in Shadow Tactics too?

Shadow Tactics doesn't have that feature (it doesn't let you explore buildings either), but it more than makes up for it with the brilliant missions and characters Very Happy

Using tied up guys to get the ponchos and overcoats to move was a really good tip Very Happy
The level were doc is missing and you have no weapons would be quite hard without that trick Smile Especially with Sanchez, who can throw the guys some distance Very Happy

You need that trick for the last mission too, don't see how you would get past some dudes.

And did you return the money to the bank in that mission Very Happy it's interesting who has the money in their possession.

No, I did notice the level had an entire story about the failed(?) bank heist, and there are conversations to check on the far side of the map. But I didn't get the disguise (how do you even get that??) which made it even harder to get there.
It's a bit of a weird designed level, I thought.

You can get the disguise with that same trick when you tie up someone and lure the big coat guy away.

If you listen to the Sheriff conversation that will tell you who has the money.

That's probably my favorite game in the genre. An underrated gem with an all-time great soundtrack. Thanks to the fantastic sprite work it still looks beautiful today.

The first chapter was OK, but it really turns into a great game from chapter two onwards. The only problem is that the gameplay becomes a bit repetitive, but that's inherent to the genre.

easy way to take them is with the witch, link them to someone. kill the other guy which stuns the long coat them stab him in the back.

she can solo them herself

^ well she only has 3 of those, maybe even less on hard difficulty. You could also snipe the long coat with McCoy and then back-stab. ofc you can't do any of it if someone is watching the longcoat which they are in the last mission.

Starting the second "real" level. Awesome so far, they really nailed the spirit of the first, while adding great improvements. Will defo buy when the price drops.

Check out some of the speedruns of the later chapters, they're amazing Laughing
Some really cool techniques there, lots of running and gunning too Very Happy

You can throw bodies on the long coats with Hector, and then take them out when they're down (at 4:45 in video below)

Didn't know that either, I tried to shoot a couple of other things (including some signs) but that didn't work, so it's probably just a couple (or just this one).
Third mission maybe in Flagstone, there is a loose sign near the tracks.

Desperados 3 is as good as I hoped it would be. It’s a bigger and more ambitious game than Shadow Tactics which still stays true to the original series. I had a sweet time wrecking havoc through the Wild West and I look forward to the new content, free or otherwise.

Pros:
+ Fantastic level design
+ Complex tactical gameplay
+ Great group dynamic
+ High quality soundtrack and voice acting
+ Artistic direction
+ Replay value

Cons:
– Tells a rather simple story
– A few issues with targeting objects
– Some minor bugs

Finished it, great game!

I had played Shadow Tactics a while ago but that one didn't catch my full attention really, I think I might have played a few missions but then abandoned it. Desperados feels like a huge step up in the map design game and utilizing all abilities. The story is generic as fuck, but it's serviceable.

The only annoying downside was the voiceovers. "Let's take a gander", "My, aren't you handsome!", "Soul for papa guede!", "time to use bianca"...

It's really annoying in Shadow Tactics where the NPC's / enemies repeat a certain sentence every 20 seconds or whatever, it made me turn off the volume after a while when i wanted to be strategic and slow in some areas.

Does this has the same?
