gamespot interview, the 7th feb., 6 days ago :
Quote: | IGN: How far along would you say the game is? Any estimate on a release date?
Gavin Carter: As I mentioned, we're completely focused on squashing the final bugs to get the game out on store shelves. Don't want to give out a definite date yet but the end is in sight. |
full interview here
http://pc.ign.com/articles/686/686663p1.html
Gavin carter is producer. He probably is more fitted to estimate the release date than editors. (He's actually working everyday with the devs, and can see how things are actually going.)
24 march is still just and estimation from the editor. It is a likely one, indeed. But until the game is finished, it can still be pushed back.

Deus Ex 2 was already crappy looking 3 months before release, plus the fact that it was an Xbox port which was known long before didn't raise the expectations. Devs were talking about "simplifying" the game more than a year before release, then devs leaving ion storm in protest in the middle of development... DX2 was the crap everyone expected who closely followed the game when it was released.
And btw, I thought Thief 3 was surprisingly good (especially after DX2). It was one the positive surprises of that year, better than thief 2 and certainly far better than the splinter cell series.
I tihnk something really terrible must happen to make oblivion the piece of shit DX2 was... Enough people previewed the game saying it's really good. I guess the biggist criticisms will probably concern low performance on certain PCs and maybe buggy stuff...

Played through a couple of times, to "win" the game it'll take u maybe 20 hours or so but there is probably another 200-300 hours of things to do. It's a really huge game. Tips would be to talk to everyone, take every mission and enroll to at least one guild.

Normal RPGs are quite incomparable to Oblivion, cause they are linear games.

All single player RPGs are 'linear'. They have a pre-set path of events from the beginning to the end.
A non-linear game would give you NO main quests. You would be responsible for levelling up, getting the right equipment, and completing whatever goal you set. Events would still happen around you, but they may have no effect at all on what you are doing. Or they may matter a lot and ruin your current plan.
Morrowind does not do this! There is a single set of quests that lead you from start to finish. If you pay attention, Caius leads you by the nose through them. This is 'linear'.
Having said that... a truly non-linear game would be extremely frustrating and probably quite boring. It'd be much more like 'real life' than a video game.
Oblivion will also be linear. You will be able to go off and do whatever you want, but there will always be a definite game-defined current goal.
If they DO make it non-linear, and prove me wrong that a single-player non-linear game can be fun... I'll be amazed.

Oblivion (assuming everything the dev said is true) has both a linear and a non-linear aspect.
It is true there is a main quest wich happen in a linear way. And well as some side-quest that are also linear.
But some events happens randomly, because of others NPC trying to reach their goals. One dev said that the NPC sometimes surprised them while playing. IF this is true, it means the AI is able to initiate action on it's own, and then it's not linear anymore.
they also gave exemple where NPC would level up by training, by themselves. Then decide to go in a dungeaon by themselves, and eventually you would meat them and cooperate or compete with them.
That is what I call non linear. PNJs / monsters are living their life, taking action, and the world is moving wether you are here or not. And yet, your action still affect the world.
But as you said, this would be frustrating, and maybe boring if this was al there were to the game. So they limmited some of the NPC's action. Like they randomly (or rather, when they have reason to do it) go into dungeon. But to avoid frustrating the player, they will never do so before the player. They will go after, or in the same time.
Kinda like saying that the world is non-linear, but to avoid boredom the player is extra lucky. The event are still randoms, not pre-scripted. But they happen more often around the player.
Also, this AI still has limitations. Wich is why it isn't able to generate complex events on it's own. Politicians don't set elaborate scheme to kill their ruler, NPC don't manipulate each others ... so, to have those real scenaeii happening, they still use good old linear quest in their non-linear world.

You're right, it isn't totally dynamic, but it is by far enough to call it non-linear. Oblivion is not comparable to linear games like FF-series where you are forced to go from a to b to c.

Nothing is truly non linear. Every game needs to follow a certain line, to be enjoyable. It can be flexible as hell but there has to be a line. But there are always gay people that will complain about it, even in a rich free world as Oblivion where you have the most freedom in a game ever, there are still punks whining.

They are a lot of funny threads in which people speculate about Oblivion like :
"OMG, the gfx look crappy on the last screenshots : the devs have removed all shader options
on the game"
or
" According to a very secret source, Oblivion has gone gold but the dev's don't want to share
this information"
Several dozens of threads like that per day : they really should get a life ... |
Hehe, yeah, been a forum member there since morrowind and the last couple of months, especially right before the prior releasedates (november, christmas) have been so shockfull och bullshit, one out of thirty threads are worth reading, the rest is rubbish.
Just wish they'd release the game tomorrow

Amongst all the bullshit, i've found an interesting thread which summarises one Oblivion preview from PC Gamer uk (March edition) :
Quote: |
While in my local newsagents today, I stumbled across PC Gamer UK's March edition, which featured a lovely preview hands-on of Oblivion that, while not revealing the answers to some of your questions, I thought might be a nice change from the recent graphics-[censored]ing and bizarre water fixation.
Basically the reviewer had nothing but good things to say about the game, I'll list the main points I remember and I'll answer any questions I can (bearing in mind it was not a MASSIVE preview and didn't contain any info on Vampires, lore and guild setups)
- The reviewer started off by covering the arena combat. You enter the huge arena floor through the Gladiator's quarters, up a bloody passage and out into the spotlight. Apparently you are met with roars from the crowd which grow louder when your opponent enters. In this case the player was fighting a female combatant who he duked it out with for a while before unleashing a massive hit with his warhammer that sent her flying three metres back.
- Paralysis is, apparently, reason enough in its own right to pay for the game. The reviewer paralysed the enemy in the aforementioned fight with the "Lover's Kiss" power (a star-sign gift as in Morrowind) and fired an arrow into her, toppling her over. He didn't finish her off then as he could have, preferring to wait until she reagined her movement before commencing the two-handed warhammer twotting I mentioned earlier.
- After this fight he spent the night in an inn, but was rudely awakened by a member of the Dark Brotherhood who told him of the organisation's interest in him (hopefully the Brotherhood don't dress like [censored] C3PO's anymore). The thief/assassin left by way of a Chameleon spell through the back door.
- He left (as far as I remember on his way to a contract killing for the Brotherhood) on a horse and spent some time admiring the scenery while galloping onwards. Here is one little touch that had me chuckling in glee. The previewer rode on for a long time across the landmass and began to traverse a mountain path when poor old Tonto the Horse, knackered from the journey, collapsed from exhaustion and toppled down said mountain, leaving our hero to make the rest of the way on foot. Presumably, then, there must be some system that forces you to rest your gallant steed for a while (maybe campfire building?). Of course, this could have been a glitch or something, but the previewer made no suggestions that this was the case.
- He went over magic briefly, comparing the new fireball spells to FPS rocket launchers. Apparently there is much more of a kinetic feeling of impact with spells now, sending bodies and objects flying through the air.
Magic is a real force now.
- One thing that comforted me was that he said every previewer of the 15 or so that were at the event came away with a different story. While he had come from gladiator to contract killer, others had gone vampire hunting, foiled the plans of two twin temptresses who were robbing the local menfolk, explored dungeons, bartered with merchants and more.
Intriguing.
- Graphics were mentioned. Unlike the Danish chap who was kind enough to post his views on this forum, the UK reviewer played the game on max settings, presumably on a near-final build. The machine they used was a bit of a monster, a 4.2 dual core processor, 7800 GeForce GFX but only 1 gig of RAM, and it apparently ran at about 1280 x 1024 or something similiar with a silky-smooth framerate. The article made a guess at minimum spec, something like a 2.0ghz processor, 9800 or above GFXcard and a gig of RAM but this was just speculation. Oh, and the game looks better then Angelina Jolie, naked, frollicking in a giant bowl of whipped cream.
- There were a couple of screenies that are probably leaked on the net somewhere, but ones I haven't seen before. One had a tree-like female being raking with her claws at the player, one showed a guard on horseback and I can't recall the others, though I think I have seen most of them before. (EDIT) One other I have just remembered was a Khajit with a battleaxe attacking the player with a snowy vista and some kind of ruin in the distance behind him. Nice shot as i recall.
Waah. Those were the main bits, can't recall anything else except the fact that the previewer raved about the combat, saying it was rewarding and surprisingly deep. Quick slashes and parries with the shortsword can be just as effective as huge swipes with a claymore. Apparently well-timed blocks of the shield can stun opponents, according to the previewer it was especially fun to wait until a rat jumped at you before bruising both its face and its ego by slamming it away with your shield. Nothing majorly new I suppose, but some nice stuff nonetheless.

Oblivion's definitely shaping up for GOTY.
I'm no fanboy, but it seems to me that all the new tech we've been seeing for the past few years has matured from HL2 physics toys (which were, in their own right, pretty [censored] fun.) It seems this game's going to do some bar-setting for engagement, as Doom 3 did for graphics. Hopefully, the engine won't limp and bleed out the ass like Doom 3.
I can already see my GPA bleeding to death and looking up at Oblivion dressed in full daedric...
erm, you get the point.
