Looking forward to playing the reworked original as I never played it originally and it has aged horribly graphics wise. Mafia 2 was a big improvement there (I played it a few years ago), the only negatives that come to mind would be its relatively short length and the small map.

I wish Mafia 3 had all-scripted missions as those generic takeover ones are horribly repetitive because otherwise the setting, the story and the map are pretty good.

Do you think Mafia 2 will still have the Physx effects? No game seems to use them anymore, what a shame.

Odd though since you would think a definitive version would include DLC ...

Well there's some update happening looking at SteamDB but it could be anything.
Mafia 3's bugs are also only part of the issue the second is the very repetitive gameplay loop before you get the actual story moments and major developments just dividing the city like a pizza to a bunch of winy kids.
(Vito's nice I suppose, Burke's well he's OK and then there's the crazy lady who I only kept on board for the upgrades.)

Yeah it's a instant pizza because the game felt a bit half baked and there's pineapple on it because the game has elements not everyone liked. Razz

Bugs and other problems well there's the classic delayed SSR update times.

Or the infinite people holders.
The telephone booths.

These days, the "drepx" effects can be easily simulated on GPU using compute shaders, or even the CPU.

It's bad and i mean a bad, game was for few hours on AU PSN store someone streamed it and:
audio is broken, it's mono (dialogs in one ear and other sounds in other)
framerate is so bad on ps4 pro sometimes it's below 20fps (and yes there was already 1.0.1 patch and it didn't fixed anything)
sounds of guns and fights and now new and it sound so weird
not to mention it's buggy
facial expressions look worse than in normal game, but sometimes it looks great
and a lot more
remaster is made by d3t ltd so that explains everything

From Era, one of them also linked to this video clip.
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/624850518

And then this.
https://clips.twitch.tv/EmpathicHappyGazelleSwiftRage

EDIT: Seems someone attempted a comparison as well.

EDIT: The big one is the Mafia 1 remake though these are touched up and re-released although I have no idea what studio is doing what, apparently these devs were behind the Shenmue re-release from what I read.

EDIT: As to PhysX it's too old it'd need a complete remake against the newer SDK and changes to a lot of stuff so I'd imagine it'll simply be ripped out entirely and also some features with it like how some of the comments mentioned the cloth simulation is now gone entirely even if it was also present in the console editions originally.
(The full on particle and smoke effects would be too demanding but it makes sense it's all gone if it's stripped out or replaced in full rather than rebuilt.)

It feels a bit like what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed 3 and Rogue updating and enhancing certain elements but against old assets and the older engine so you get a bit of a mixed effect and the engine optimizations and updates would be partial at best so more demanding lighting and shadows and less work on CPU and GPU utilization and framerate drops ensues.

Possibly one reason as to why the game hits sub-30 here from reports but it might be better coded against the Xbox console but we'll know in a few hours when the game goes live as intended instead of this early Australian PSN oopsie. Razz

1.0.1 update seems to have added a 2k logo and so far no-one has found much else about what it does but it doesn't seem to address concerns like the audio quality and FPS drops.

Hopefully Mafia 1 will be handled better but it could also end up like Far Cry 1 remastered to use Ubisoft again ported across a new engine but overall inferior to the original other than being shinier.

I don't expect many of the smaller details or nuances to carry over at all personally but we shall see but I assume it's Mafia 3's engine and flaws now brought into a remake of the first game at best with less tech issues.
(But it's a full remake so I expect these things too.)

Wonder if HDR support is a thing, might also explain the differences in tone mapping and lighting making them go for the obvious brighter and more saturated approach instead of something more toned down but still utilizing the hardware to enhance the presentation but without the whole marketing thing on super bright overly contrasted visuals.

That or we're just in the new age of the 2006 bloom fad again. Razz
High dynamic chromatic aberration now there's a new terrible idea. Very Happy

EDIT: Maybe making developers read and watch more classic works too instead of 1990's special effects CGI stuff could help...

EDIT: Hell do it anyway, make them understand wide screen properly while at it.

(A decent FOV would be a bonus but that's probably fucked by this point. ~ )

10 minutes of gameplay from the Definitive Edition of Mafia II

A warning that the video is a little bit loud (especially at the beginning).

In 2014 Ubisoft released Far Cry Classic - a HD "remaster" of the first game for the 360 and the PS3. It was part of those "Summer Arcade" thingies that Microsoft was doing back then.

Good ol' lazy and low-effort Remustard, a trademark these days. With the Mafia 3 one being merely another repacking job, all our "hopes" lie on the Mafia 1 Remake. It really is difficult to be optimistic though, no matter the promises.

Apart from the rock-solid narrative and visuals for the time, Mafia 1's strongest points were the realism and cohesiveness, with incredible attention to details and physics/sense of weight applied to the gameplay. From the guns' kickback to the driving model and collisions, everything felt believable and immersive in a non-gamey way.

Will a modern remaking job manage to retain all that without unnecessary arcade additions and excessive consolitis? That's the biggest question mark really, considering that Hangarsoft's previous attempt was essentially The Godfather 3.

It has been 18 years and no game in the genre managed to beat Mafia 1 in the car handling and weapon recoil. It still feels incredible once you get used to it. The Colt 1911 headshots. Me Gusta

I hope you liked Mafia 3's shooting, since apparently they have turned the 1 remake into a cover shooter, so presumably it is just reusing all of 3's mechanics.
