Sure, to be clear here, i have no respect for any devs "meant to be played like this" mentality. If i don't like something, and i can do something about it, i will, won't think twice. Both kojima with Sekiro and Id with their press C, Press R, Press E cycle can suck ma balls.
Finished it. I will not be replaying it. I absolutely hated it near the end and it got annoying/tiresome around 3rd of the game. Just constant cacophony of monsters everywhere around you, systems and pointless upgrades... I rarely felt in control of the fight while in 2016 Doom, I felt like a badass all the way.
Why the fuck is this getting such a nice reviews. Technically, I feel like 2016 looked a bit more detailed but this one has some amazing looking vistas.
And all the arcade shit and platforming. MY BOY

I mean, sure the visuals are quite nice, but like the previous version, I just can't be done with this glory kill to survive gameplay.
Playing on any difficulty other than easy is frustratingly annoying when you constantly run out of ammo, and easy is just perfect for console kiddies who want to just show off to mum or their mate.
Absolutely no skill whatsoever. Dodging makes no difference.
I might have to review this just for the hate

Super Doom Mario Eternal brothers, Doom 2016 is better 10x, you just shoot and kill and progress, here they forced chainsaw kills to get ammo? When you desperately need ammo in some fight you will go out of ammo, and risk dying. This is very annoying and frustrating. It happens a lot. Game is forcing you to play with different approach. It's ok to see animations for a few times, but every 5 second for hour or two is annoying, and all that upgrades and tutorials? I got lost in all that. Did not even bother to try to understand, i downloaded trainer, turned on unlimited ammo and bethesda can go fuck themselves with "2020 innovations".
Not sure why everyone praise the visuals. Sure they were impressive in Doom 2016, but over 3 years later I'd imagine there will be more significant improvements in that department and not look almost identical to its precedessor. It was great before, now it's just good.
On the other hand Doom Eternal is one of the best optimized games in history, not a single dip in fps, not a single microstutter, all buttery smooth on max details, now that's hella impressive work!

seems like everyone is cheating on this by look of the rin forums because its too difficult (i suspect most of them are not understanding the chainsaw/health mechanics well)
it's pretty amusing watching shroud play on normal difficulty and still have so much trouble he seems to be having fun though
watching him play it like quake 3 makes me want to buy it
still its not hard to see why people are raging because the game does force you to play a certain way, and certainly nothing like doom
That is the issue. Forcing a specific game mechanic which is utterly repetitive is, to me, no fun at all.
Each to their own of course.
As for the graphics, it's impressive that there is 144fps at 1080p on Nightmare settings without absolutely no slowdown. Ray-traced graphics in this game make no sense, it's too fast to stop and appreciate, but the effects and the number of things going on while looking good is noteworthy.

How far in am I? Just reached Mars but turned it off as it was getting tedious. Might drop down to easiest difficulty just to finish the game.
Level design is pretty ridiculous haha. I know it's for gameplay, but if the bad guy don't want doomguy murdering them, maybe don't put up floating coffins that he can grab on to. Bam, problem solved and doomguy is now stuck outside your fortress.
Yeah thought it was just me. Not having fun with the constant chainsaw / flamethrower etc. Also too much platforming imo.
Liking the optimization though. Plenty of headroom left for raytracing effects when they do come.
Another thing i don't like (maybe i'm just getting old, dno), even at 144hz and gsync, motion blur disabled to have max clarity, either the game is just too cluttered or it's my eyes/brain that can't process that fast anymore. Getting overwhelmed, that i can't stay alive too long and not being able to figure out what's attacking me or where it is (way too many fast monsters that get up in your face / sides / back ). Haven't tried on easy but... from what i've reading that one is too easy then.
Also, too many upgrades of upgrades of upgrades, too many things to keep track of etc.
Feels like Doom 2016 had the right idea. Here it's just, hey let's put in this feature too, and this, and this and this and this and this and... fuck off already, wanted an FPS. Shooty shooty bang bang yes? No. Ok
Anyway, glad i didn't buy it.

you are just old.. or more realistically it's because of the sheer amount of noise on screen, games with more realistic(?) graphics take far more mental processing. obviously when you put 10 or 15 guys on screen with a complicated backdrop and level, there is so much shit going on it's very difficult to process compared to older games, particularly at the speed doom expects you to be running around.
it actually reminds me a lot of playing old deathmatch games where there were simply too many people in the match for the size of the level you stick to a corner while fragging and move periodically to not get overwhelmed or hit in the back.

Your not using the the god-mode ammo button + watching cinematics enough in firefights.
Many game developers add much, unneeded clutter / objects to their environment scenes, just for the sake of 'art' or adding more 'realism'.
For me, it's unnecessary, annoying and truly unrealistic.
Some games I've played that suffered from this 'trend' were World of Warcraft (Retail) and Battlefield V. And since my brain tends to process absolutely everything including all the very small details (professional skill, I guess, as I am a designer), playing those games was annoyingly tiresome.
The game feels a bit like some of the early 90's shooters in that way, what clutter or objects exist are either sparse both for performance and the combat arena perspective or it's a reference or easter egg of which the game appears to have endless amounts of them.
Only truly detailed area is DOOM Dude's DOOM Cave of manliness up in the flying fortress which apparently also runs on (AMD) Vega now.
Just one of them:
Think the only other recent game I've seen this type of design in lately was Postal 4 though with a much darker brand of humor attached to it, expecting Borderlands 3 to have some of it too but nowhere near what DOOM Eternal does with so many of it's various assets when it's not the floors or walls surrounding the combat arena or the somewhat more detailed but still sparse exploratory corridors around it.
Oh and I really dislike Bethesda / id Software going with the lowest common denominator and then somehow under that into negative spectacular as it is of a achievement.
A circular arena is most of what you get from area to area with Big Doom Slayer Man Dude coming into A and the exit is always B and there is no C.
So far a few levels in every single time the game has color coordination generally via green lighting and yellow texturing for the platforms usually with a trail of armor shards or similar and if that wasn't enough there's a cutscene zooming right in on where and how to get to the exit.
Breaks up the pacing a bit as everything forcibly stops and it goes into swishing camera mode because apparently this one and only exit out of the almost empty circular small area is otherwise going to be missed.
In a way that this ended up being required is impressive but in a less good way.
EDIT: Build engine in a way perhaps though these used a lot of props and clutter much as anything and everything could be some odd easter egg or reference, might be better examples.
EDIT: And as the most cluttered area in the game the hub area also has even more references though far less hidden.

Spoiler:
Famous literature.
"Famous" games.
And a whole lot more particularly that room and nods to the previous DOOM's and so on.
EDIT: What more, oh yeah while less of a major point compared to the gameplay and just killing demons the added story and plot points and character just feels confusing and is divided up by these collectibles for anyone wanting to get something like a explanation.
(Feels like 2016 handled it far better introducing and revealing characters and progression much as the plot was simple enough overall just kill demons.)
Some of it existed and was added as DOOM 2016 went on but here it just starts confusing and more is added in short order.
Guys is it possible to limit the FPS somehow in the game itself? I'm not talking about V-Sync, and I know you can use other apps for this outside the game (RTSS, NV Control Panel, etc.), but I'm curious if this could be done in-game, in-engine with console commands, command line arguments, or editing config files.
That's quite odd to be honest, I've never had any kind of issues with every recent IdTech Engine (Doom '16, Wolfenstein 1 & 2), I've always used MSI AB+RTSS and everything was flawless. I've tried uncapping the FPS and returned to the 1st level, in a particular area my FPS was about 90's-100's and everything was fluid enough, then it tanked down to 70'ish and it felt choppy like 30FPS
Might try closing AB+RTSS+disable Reshade or even try the CODEX version later, to see if there's any improvement.
So, after some trial and error, I think I've managed to solve my issues, switched from Borderless to Fullscreen (I always tend to use borderless on every game that supports it) and done, no more choppy framerates and now MSI AB+RTSS+Reshade are working without any issues
So, to anyone having the same FPS issues as I did, there it is

Tried to beat it on Ultra-Violence (hard) but the game broke me with the third boss. I don't know if the game is balanced around normal difficulty or just they didn't give a fuck. Dunno but a boss fight where I run out of bullets, couldn't chainsaw basic mooks but had to headshot them with an assault rifle to which I could or could not have the proper mod while dodging bullets, "lava floor" and falling out of the arena. No just fuck it. I'm too old for that shit.
And that last level and last boss I was running on cheats, unlimited ammo and last boss - the sentinel armor. I just didn't care at that moment - the game stopped being fun and become an exercise in pain and your luck. Because there was no strategy only frantic mashing of buttons and counting that I will freeze or burn something. I never felt I was in control of the battlefield - just running and jumping in circles watching for an opening to get a few potshots.
The worst enemy was Maurader - immune to the sword and BFG weapons with spawning of that dog just pain in the ass. Especially when apparently not all (with auto aim off) shots from shotgun register or the damage is not a constant number it was a chore sometimes. Especially when to hit him while he attacks, you had to stay a little bit still to initiate his attack.
I mean it's not a bad enemy but maybe not on UV.
Some vistas was great. And the level design I wrote before just arena after arena with various level of good placement. The graphics were meh for 2020 game but you rarely enjoyed them due to pace. When look upon closely you see a lot of low poly models and textures.
And that Urdak platforming can go fuck itself.
The story and writing was gibberish and garbage. Just a back story for the Doomguy that was really unnecessary. Just say who he was don't make him what you made him. And the story itself tries to be grim while on the other hand the intermissions just put you out of it when in Fortress of Doom you have all the unlockables and 4th wall breaking.
Overall from my early 8/10 to 6.5 weak 7. I dunno why it gets some much prise from the reviews (except because of free codes that were given to the reviewers and probably NDAs). They shouldn't have overdid it.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
