Played about an hour. Bearing in mind I've not touched this till now, so I have no idea how far it's come.
Excellently done. I'm going to gues it's a licensing thing, but I don't remember the voice actors sounding quite like they do so I presume these are different actors - so far they sound good, nothing too stilted.
I notice a few little changes here and there, so far mainly cosmetic, but the game certainly plays like I remember.
I'll give it a full review I think, after I've given it another hour or two of play.

I haven't been following this at all. Played the original about 20 years ago...
What engine did they use?

Branched off Source 2013, i.e. TF2's engine.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."

"a phenomenon."

Alpha, featureless, incomplete (aka buy my DLC for a cumplete experience!).
Star Citizen is at 3.8.2. And it's still in alpha...

Well... this is pretty damned good.
There are a few little niggles, like getting stuck on ...seemingly nothing while moving through doors, or even just corridors, but nothing gamebreaking...
I don't remember the game being quite so...easy. Or perhaps I'm just a bit better than I was back then!
Graphics are about as good I think they probably can be.
Sound/Music is pretty good.
No arrows...maps...stupidly obvious NPC hints... Proper old school gaming. Millennials will hate it

This was released to market in alpha too.
It's not like they were giving it away for free in the 5 years it took them to make the rest of the game.

There is only one release of the mod version. Script and level design is largely the same, so fairly similar. Biggest difference is the AI.

"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."

I don't think so, but nonetheless even if there was, that would have been the mod version, which only had 1 version (no updates).

Truly a wonderful game.
For me, this game, System Shock 2 and Deus Ex are beyond any modern game to me. Yes they are dated in some ways (obviously) but they're still so incredible.
Vampire Bloodlines The Masquerade is of course also a classic but to me it's a tad too buggy to be considered in the same realm as the above three. |
Absolutely, they truly don't make 'em like that anymore. It's not the nostalgia or some phantasmal goggles speaking, it's the way the quality level design merges with the PC-centric controlling method and overall direction which never interferes with the player's decision making and is devoid of lousy streamlining techniques. The same applies to Stalker, Gothic, Thief and so on.
Black Mesa is like a magnificent dinosaur standing among chickens, the bittersweet image of 20+ years of reverse evolutionary processes.

To me the one modern game that really stands out as feeling somewhat similar is Prey (2017). I know a lot of people on this forum dislike that game or think it's average.
I won't disagree that it has its flaws, enemy variety and design being one (though I still kind of like it). And I'm by no means saying it's as good as the above three...
But fuck me if that game didn't give me a similar feeling of freedom, exploration, sci-fi and discovery that Half-Life (in spite of being linear), Deus Ex and System Shock 2 did.
And I absolutely love the story and intro-set up.
I recently played through it (Prey 2017) once again and now that I know where stuff is I went for a sort of completionist non-stealth playthrough, I STILL found little nooks and secrets I hadn't discovered the last time when I went through the game. And I got mighty overpowered real fast compared to last time. That's what I love about old school game design, it rewarded those who had intimate knowledge of the game. I feel like there are very few games nowadays who do that.
And yeah there's Dishonored, Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided and I love them but none of them gave me the same feeling that Prey did. |
Arkane are among the very few developers that still adhere to the classic formula and care about level design, and as you said, it really is a pleasant and rewarding sensation. There are obviously some compromises coming into play, but both Prey (which I thoroughly enjoyed as well on Nightmare difficulty + Interface customizer ) and Dishonored 2 definitely represent beautiful anomalies in today's panorama. Talos I is especially one of the finest examples of how proper exploration and interesting lore can coexist in modern gaming without stepping on each other's toes *and* without unnecessary cinederpmatic tricks. It's a real shame that the reception in terms of sales apparently was a mild one, to the point that we might never see a sequel.
The scenario for single-player enthusiasts who loathe mainstream approaches, shiny colorized RPGizations designed to boost the grind factor, greedy practices, and similar tripeA embarrassments is not an idyllic one on PC. Thankfully though, from time to time, we can still count on titles that break the stale mold and make us breathe again. Kingdom Come: Deliverance definitely is one of those, as well as Subnautica, Disco Elysium, From Software's games (+ their clones to a degree), TW3 and quite a few other examples that share the same quality of not insulting the player's intelligence. We must hold onto these precious gems, since with our hobby that's slowly sinking they're our only lifeboats.

to say that games like black mesa and hl2 are better than todays games is just ignorant or you dont play many shooters to begin with.
