Just a heads up that the base game is currently free on Steam.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/582660/Black_Desert_Online/

I haven't played it, so I'm not sure if you need to buy some expansions to get the full experience, because I see that there are some "packages" that are on sale.

It's free and definitely worth checking out.
It may be pay 2 win if you want to be best end game pvper out there, for everyone else it's just good f2p mmorpg, best looking one and with not too shabby combat at that.
I had a mmorpg itch for a while and this one satisfied my needs, if you're looking for one give it a go.
Did I mention it's free? Wink

'free'

In MMO terms that means you pay one way or another. If one has a real itch for an MMO just don't bother with these types and go with: WoW, ESO or FF. Hell, I'd even recommend KotOR:O before something like this.

I've been playing it for a month+ and while I have many issues with it, most of them stemming from the simple fact that it's an MMO and it was built around that, it really got to me and I'm enjoying it quite a lot. I don't like MMOs. It gets better the more you delve into it. I've had no issues making my way through the game by not paying anything extra and I still have some of the bonuses from when I started, about to expire the following days. There's an update every week and there are constantly events of some kind. I don't think it's that much of a pay 2 win game, there isn't even much to win. There's so much stuff you can do in this game that you'll constantly be bouncing around between things depending on what you want to do. You might be able to pay to speed things up, but otherwise I for one don't feel that I'm missing out on much by not paying extra. I even got myself the premium costume that the newest class came with, through the ingame marketplace that functions entirely on the ingame currency.

No, you don't need to, nobody forces you except yourself. Sure it's less grindy for paying users but grind is just part of the end game. I don't play this for the fucking end game where I clearly don't stand a chance, I play this becuase it's good game to chill and fuck around doing tons of different activities while enjoying the views.
BDO is a great alternative for broke ass hobos like me which aren't going to pay monthly subscription for the obviosly superior experience like FFXIV.

Just as above, you don't need to MAX OUT your inventory to enjoy this game.
But I guess without folks like you, with MUST BUY compulsiveness to get MOAR EVERYTHING, f2p games wouldn't exist and I couldn't enjoy some of them completely free, so I believe that thanks are in order guys Razz

BTW there are plenty of free ways to increase inventory space and weight limit like quests and login-in rewards.

You pay one way or another refers to: design. You might not pay money, but you will feel the design decisions that come with free to play. Not just end game, that's just an excuse. The entire game is designed around cash shop/F2p.

I know a lot of people don't want to see it, especially not in the first few months but it is there and has always been from the beginning.

That being said, if you enjoy it... all fine.

Yeah it's like that on purpose absolutely everything can be sped up by spending some cash and they use every trick imaginable to get you to spend some.

Dear lord this is an understatement.

I saw quite a few Steam friends playing this recently so decided to give it another go. I was hopeful but instead I discovered a game that was designed by a damn sadist. How the hell can people play this game?

Let's see:

- nearly EVERY quest is a fetch quest with zero depth and requires you walk across the map like a lunatic

- almost everything you do requires energy which replenishes veeeeeeery sloooooowly. For some elements it makes sense but you quickly run out after some harvesting.

- the game's quests are often tied to this annoying & tedious mini game where you have to chat to people to increase their "amity" (friendship) which ... requires energy.

- the game is incredibly vague about many things and the UI is waaaaay overcomplicated. Nothing is centralized and what is very standard in most games, is overly complicated here. Having to sift through menu after menu trying to find the info or window you need ... fuck me, shows Asians designed this game because Asians are notorious for being shit at designing an UI (look at Sony)

- the HUD ... dear fucking lord. It's a mess. And that's not counting all the many icons you see floating around the screen. You can disable a lot of it but many contain useful info which in "normal" games is given in a less screen-filling way.

- the whole node system is terribly explained - I get the gist of it but how it all ties together and why it's important to use nodes is NOT explained. Why WOULD you spend all that time if you can buy better food from a restaurant for example?

A lot of the game is like this: they explain mechanics but not why you should use the mechanics. With nodes, I presume you can produce items you can't buy or loot which are vital to the game but this is never said.

- Some of the quests are just ... evil. "Go fish for *insert fish name here*". After 5 hours in the indicated spot, two hours of active fishing, three hours of AFK fishing, no such fish! And then there's those quests that send you to an area for a specific creature ... which isn't even in that damn area but in another area not too far from there.

- Or how about the game requiring 5 or 10 or 20 or 100 of some items for them to be worth something - meanwhile they clutter up your inventory which is precious because this game throws a ton of crap at you all the time.

- Oh my fucking lord, and then there's crafting ... a convoluted mess of workshops and stuff you can do yourself. Except it's a massive mess. Say you want to produce a drink and you know the name but not the ingredients. You have to go through a HUGE list of drinks which ARE NOT ALPHABETICALLY SORTED. Heck, there is NO order to that list at all. I figure they just translated it from Korean and couldn't be assed to re-sort the damn list! The game is full of such idiotic design decisions.

- The way weapons and gear works just does not feel fun to me. Instead of finding progressively better stuff, you have to upgrade your current stuff over and over and you CAN find some really good stuff ... but it's probably extremely rare and requires tons and tons of grinding. The game relies on you leveling your skills (most of which you get early on) more than your gear from what I can tell which is about the worst thing a MMO can do because it means that from start to finish, you pretty much do the same thing.

- You can own a house which is cool but from what I gather, the only way to get decent furniture is to buy it with Pearls which defeats the entire damn point of a house in a MMO!

The combat mechanics are much better than in most games but here combat seems to be about area attacks a lot - mowing down entire fields of enemies at once. Again, very Asian since they love this OTT stuff but it just doesn't feel right to me.

The combat and the graphics are is about the only positive thing I can say after 20 hours of playing. Time to go back to the vastly superior Elder Scrolls Online ...

No worries, soon we have Cyberpunk for the bobs and vagene sliders.

@Red
Fuck, that sounds like they haven't even bothered with things since they released it in the Western market. It's been ages since I played it but some of that nonsense was there in 'beta'. Would have thought they at least made it somewhat better (not the energy crap, of course they going to milk that shit system)

Thing is, there's a LOT going on and I mean a LOT. You can even breed horses. On paper it seemed like it could be like Eve: boring at the start until you got into the game's economy but while Eve got rather tedious before it became fun again, this game didn't show ANY reason why it would become fun again. It's grinding after tedious grinding after tedious grinding.

In Eve you can build massive fleets of gigantic ships but what can you do in Black Desert ? Grinding. And more grinding. There's no raids, no dungeons, no nothing. You got Node wars if you're in a guild but it all feels rather pointless.

But yeah, this game makes NOTHING fun except perhaps combat, sometimes. Except BDO's idea of enemies is constant endless re spawning with a ridiculously short timer. How long do you think it takes to respawn an enemy? In normal MMOs it's what, 10-20 minutes? In BDO it's 2-3 minutes. Take a breather to type in chat and it's all respawned again, it's insane.

Yesterday I was so stupid that I wanted to do all side quests before I moved on. Here were the side quests:

- find 3 cats on roofs closeby
- deliver grapes to a farm
- pick up a bag of grain and walk (very slowly) to someone on a farm
- fish up 2x fish A
- fish up fish B
- fish up 3x fish C
- bring a letter to another farm
- kill 5 animal A
- kill 3 animal B
- kill 10 animal C
- kill 5 animal D
- cut 50 logs
- fish up dirty laundry from the river
- bring meat to a guardsman
- deliver a letter to a farmer
- find 100 silver keys (I only got 7 silver keys after 6 hours of fishing!!)
- find 3 matryoshka figures (reward for that turned out to be really shitty)
- take a porter from farmer to town (walking very slowly or he stops following you)
- sweep a chimney (right next to the quest giver)
- sweep ANOTHER chimney
- find a caterpillar (game does NOT say how to do that)

And if you find these simplistic, here's a more "complicated" quest:
- place fences, go buy empty bottles, fill bottles with water, boil water so you got distillate water, go buy rose seeds, plant rose seeds, water land every half hour, wait three hours for roses to grow, then prune roses, then give twig from pruned roses to a little kid so he can use it as a fake sword - all this for a shitty reward.

Anyone who has played BDO can verify these are all legit quests and it's insane. Besides the rewards being ridiculous, they're so boring it makes no sense. Even the smallest ESO quests were well written and fun - this game is just torture.
