New cases finally get rid of the 5.25" front slots, that's a huge difference right there.

Not very effective at fighting dust? I don't think I've had that much dust on the inside in 4.5 years that I have the Define R5.

Thermalright SilverArrow TR4 has a TDP of 320W. Noctua doesn't state TDP in the specs of its cooler, but I see people recommending this one over that.

Edit: https://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2648080#2648080

That cooler was never available to buy in Finland for example, not sure what is going on with the product, its like urban myth, no real reviews either.

Started with orders, but not everything yet.

Corsair Dominator 3600CL16
Meshify S2
NH-U14S TR4-SP3 + two "chroma bla bla bla" black NF A15 PWM fans

Still undecided on the motherboard. Will likely go for MSI Creator TRX40. Has a 10Gb ethernet, good VRM and overall looks good, while at OK price. Would have gotten the Gigabyte one, but it's fucking XL ATX!

Any suggestions with regards to thermal pasta? I will be getting some Noctua NT-H1 with the cooler, but I see they have NT-H2 as well, which is superior. I used MX4 for the current built, but apparently the Noctua stuff is better. There is Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, which is touted as "best", but requires a lot of maintenance, and breaks down above 80c ( ).

Ordered the CPU from B&H. They have it in stock at MSRP, and with shipping+tax, it will still come quite lower than local prices. Ordered MSI Creator TRX40 from Amazon. So basically, the only thing I will buy locally is the thermal paste and case. Laughing

Just go with the MX4, its proven good and seriously, you won't probably see any real difference at that level anyway.

I have used Gelid GC-Extreme or Phobya HeGrease Extreme, cheap enough and is like 1 degrees worse than Kryonaut which is overrated expensive shit paste that dries out atleast on GPUยดs with hotspot temperatures. For editing machines and servers at work i have been using Thermal Grizzly Carbonaut pads, you dont need to ever swap those out, performs around the same on CPU as cheap paste (like 1-2 degrees worse than MX-4).

@StrEagle You sure it wasn't the Conductonaut (liquid metal)? Scratch Head

I read about the Kryonaut that it breaks under 80c, and so requires frequent maintenance, sometimes in spans of months, while Noctua is rated for 3 years, and MX4 is 8 years.

Conductonaut is better than the Kryonaut, but I preffer paste - liquid metal is too hardcore

did some digging
apparently in 2018 there was a bad batch
except for 1-2 posts I cannot find other examples of people having problems with it
my 3900x is currently with it, and I will monitor and tell if there is any issues

and here is a 2019 review of the grizzly liquid metal and the thermal paste

From your Reddit:

https://hardforum.com/threads/best-long-lasting-tim-in-2017-mx-4.1931508/#post-1042980124

Quote:
- "long-term durability"; "Kryonaut uses a special structure, which halts the drying out process at temperatures of up to 80ยฐ Celsius."

Quote:
In sum on the Kryonaut, it's stable up to 80C, then it breaks down. Ryzen shuts down at 95C. On air cooling, I could see 80C+ being relatively commonplace if you work your CPU enough to warrant having it. TG Kryonaut is intended to use between an IHS and a liquid cooling AIO or custom loop, hence the low 80C breakdown temp.

That's no bueno at all, especially on Threadripper 280W TDP, because those CPUs can get hot. So can your 3900X, so be careful. I'll stay with the Noctua 2 pasta for now.

Thats important info right there. I use Kryonaut on my Vega64 but I keep it under 65ยฐ so I'm all good, but still.

My CPU uses Noctua NT-H1.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

still I don't see anyone actually complaining from Kryonaut
many ppl say that they've observed 1-2 degrees falloff over a couple of months but after that the temps stabilized, while other pastes continue to degrade
additionally they say that even if the paste degrades over 80c, cpu temps rarely reach such high temps except in stress testing

Remember that I buying a 24 core CPU, so temps are naturally higher. I'll be using air cooling for now, so it's less efficient than liquid cooling (no liquid cooler exists for AMD TR bar one, which is an abomination). I am hoping the Ice Giant will be good, and I will order that eventually.

Is that 65C hotspot temperature or core temperature, you should be monitoring hotspot temperature on AMD cards, its usually nearly 20C higher than core temp. Hotspot can very easily make "bubble" in the paste and will dry out on that spot.

Case arrived from local storeโ€”there is no side door. This is why I hate buying locally. The incompetency is just staggering. So now they are sending a taxi to collect this case without the door, and tomorrow will they will open a new case in their warehouse to check that everything is OK, and send that one instead. Laughing (Why can't they just send the door?)

To be honest, I was surprised by how good the service was after I complained yesterday on the phone. Very un-Israel. They sent a taxi to collect the old case, the guy I spoke to had a new case delivered to his office, he checked that the case is ... whole, and will send the new case in another taxi. That's unheard of service level in Israel! Laughing I will remember that, though.
