Director Scott Derrickson Is Coming Back for More Doctor Strange
December 11th, 2018:
The Sorcerer Supreme is coming back, with the same director at the helm.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Scott Derrickson, who directed 2016's Doctor Strange, has “quietly finalized a deal” to direct Doctor Strange 2. Marvel is now out to writers and the super tentative plan is for the film to be the studio’s May 2021 release.
According to the report, Benedict Cumberbatch is expected to return as Strange, along Benedict Wong and even Rachel McAdams. No word on Chiwetel Ejiofor, who played Mordo in the original film—but since the first film set him up for a villainous role in the sequel, hopefully he’ll be back too.
Update:
November 17th, 2019:
The sequel will be the fourth movie of Phase 4 and will hit cinemas on May 7, 2021 in the US. It's not clear if it will have a traditional earlier release in the UK.
Cumberbatch's co-star Benedict Wong had previously said that he believes the movie will start filming in 2020, adding: "I know they've now got a writer on board who I met at the [Avengers] Endgame premiere."
But, as we expected, Doctor Strange made his comeback in Avengers: Endgame to rejoin Wong in defending the universe yet again, and Doctor Strange 2 was confirmed as part of Phase 4 at Comic-Con with a seriously trippy title.
Say hello to "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness".
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as EP.
That sucks, he was one of the main reasons why I found the first film to be halfway decent That and Michael Giacchino contributing to the unique OST and not make it sound like a typical bombastic superhero soundtrack.
Sam Raimi, who helped launch the modern superhero movie with 2002’s “Spider-Man,” is in talks to direct “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for Marvel Studios, Variety has learned.
Raimi replaces original director Scott Derrickson, who Variety reported on Jan. 9 had officially departed the project due to creative differences. Derrickson will remain as an executive producer. Raimi, meanwhile, will need to get up to speed before the film’s scheduled production start date in May.
Quote:
This is something of a coup for both Raimi and Marvel, given Raimi’s reputation with comic book fans — 2004’s “Spider-Man 2” is still widely regarded as one of the best superhero movies ever made. And with 15 features to his name as a director — including the beloved horror trilogy “The Evil Dead,” “Evil Dead II,” and “Army of Darkness” — Raimi is also the most established filmmaker to join the Marvel Studios fold since the earliest days of the studio, when Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston respectively directed the first “Thor” and “Captain America” movies in 2011.

Rachel McAdams, however, will not reprise her role as Strange’s colleague Christine Palmer.

Michael Waldron, the head writer of Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Loki, has been tapped to work on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
This will likely get delayed as they are likely to be discarding the previous script and starting again with a new take.

That was always the plan. Derrick's on and his buddy who wrote the first, already had a sequel penned knowing disney, but feige wanted new characters, and a concept for the new phase, and they didn't like that idea.
If they write it and Raimi is ok with it and to do what he wants it'll be a lovely schlocky marvel b-movie.
Why did they make him have an American accent. He sound so idiotic with it just like Tom Holland. Very few actors are naturally able to pull it off like Christian Bale and Colin Farrell.
Since they are basically confirming Patrick Stewart is in as part of the Illuminati with that scene in the trailer, it seems the Reed Richards and Iron Man casting rumors are probably true as well.

No they explain it.
Vaguely but still explain it.
"Are you here cause of Westview?" Blah blah blah.
And sprinkle bits throughout as well. So it isn't needed.
Motivation for characters works either way (good acting). Writing does not.
Movie is pointless once you look past the visuals and the paper thin plot.
6/10
Raimi still manages to surprise with some moments though.
Then again I gave up with 20 minutes to spare. a lot of bits pulled me out throughout. Who knows maybe last 20 minutes redeem it. But right now it feels like a chore to continue.
