"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
new type of brakes, priced between iron and carbon
still replacing them at x3 the price of optioning them??
I would probably use them if they costed about $3k and lasted 130k km
my old iron disks lasted about 100k, costed me 60 eur per disk to change and that was the premium option for 260mm
on the other hand I tend to do a lot of engine braking
My Golf4 is finally kaputt, not allowed to roam the streets anymore (several defects like broken break-thingamabop). The guy at the garage even said "how are you still alive" but i didn´t notice any life threatening behavior...
Anyways, bought Astra j 1.4 Turbo with automatic transition, 58.xxxkm on the clock, with my luck it just breaks down at 80k total and i spend 6.000€ for nothing

Why would it? I haven't heard any major issues with this engine. It's not a VW
And you got automatic transmission so you skipped on the faulty M32 manual transmission. Make regular oil changes and let the turbo slow down before turning off the engine and it should last you a long time.

Change the oil in gearbox around 80k km, do regular maintenance to the car and it will last forever.
...and let the turbo slow down before turning off the engine and it should last you a long time.
... Does this apply to all cars with turbo? When I turn of my engine the engine continues to buzz (sometimes for quite a while)... I guess that is the turbo cooling down, so I don't need to do anything else?
the turbo has engine oil going through it as your engine works, because of the oil pump
part of the turbo is very hot, and the oil line is pretty small
when you go full out on the highway, then suddenly stop at a gas station to get some soda, and turn off the engine, the oil stops circulating while your turbo is still very hot
this causes the oil that is in the turbo line to cook and loose it's lubrication properties, also to lay deposits on the oil line, which we said is pretty small
over time these deposits clog the line and cause fewer and fewer oil to go to the turbo, and the oil in general to be with less quality, which causes the turbo to work without proper lubrication and causes premature turbo failure, which could lead to total engine failure is some cases
newer cars, have systems, that after you switch the engine off, cause the engine fan blower to continue working for several minutes so that it cools the coolant and oil, and some cars even continue oil circulation in this time, to prevent the oil cooking in the turbo

Last year around this time, the gearbox went kaputt on the golf and i had to buy one from poland (restored, using better materials than factory to prevent going kaputt again). Cost me around 700€
BUT the motor is still fine, bet that fucker will last longer than i do
@difm i had planned to do that at around 80k runtime but i´m not sure if simple gear-oil-swap or a "proper" flushing where they flush the gearbox with god-knows-what to get everything out.
@StrEagle what do you advise then to stop the design flaw to kill the turbo? let the ignition on when standing around for a short while? i really don´t want to lose that car trough my own dumbass acting
with the golf 4 i was like "lol whatever,it´s a 600bucks car, nagger" but now that i am not a car hobo anymore,i´d rather keep it that way

in newer cars the fan circuit is disengaged from the ignition -> when you turn the ignition off, the engine turns off but the fan starts blowing
in older cars just let the car run idle for ~1-3min before you turn it off
and this is if you have floored it in the last 20km, or you've been in heavy traffic in the last 20km, or you've been going over 150+ in the last 20km
if you just drive normally with 50-80km with little gas - it's perfectly fine to immediately turn it off
also a good idea is to change your coolant every 100k or 5years with the thermostat
even if the dealership says it's "lifetime/not serviceable"
some garages offer a coolant flush service of the radiator if the old coolant is particularly nasty
edit: just to add - if you drove hard, but AFTER that you have driven 5-10 min normally - it's enough to cool the car down to normal and for you to just turn it off without waiting

I was just joking, VW engines has some reputation - I don't know if justified like taking oil. But in reality I heard about three failures - one major, some component just failed a week before warranty end but that means nothing in quality.
And two turbo failures in 1.4 TFSI, both after 50-60K KM. But that's because of what I and streagle are saying about letting the turbo rest for a while.
Ford 1.0 Turbo Ecoboost engine used to be pretty failure prone when it was introduced with engine blocks breaking due to overheating. They fixed it by now but I wouldn't buy a Ford with low literage Ecoboost engine from 2013-2016. And to be honest any car that has 1 liter engine doing over 120 bhp.
pretty certain I mentioned this before
my father's Polo's 1.8 turbo blew a fan at around 50k
under warranty the turbo was replaced
while replacing it they saw that fan parts went everywhere
so they replaced the intercooler and catalyst converter too, again under warranty
the car had to stay about a month in the shop while waiting for parts
but hey new parts and repair for probably over 4k eur for free
also the new turbo had a different part number, so I'd guess it's a turbo defect and they put a revised part in

Do a proper full-flush in a solid place.
Astra has to be cooled with engine running for a short while after motorway driving. That was written in my manual. Opel doesn't keep stuff running after turning off the engine. Maybe new Peugeot-based engines do that.

will do,guess the price is worth it.
regarding the turbo, thank you guys!! i´ll keep ignition on for a min or two after a longer drive. still, this shouldn´t be the way to go. i mean, how hard is it to automatically let the fan run for 2 mins afterwards? weird that there isn´t an aftermarked solution for this
anyways, the car is sooooo goood. if youre used to driving golf4,you feel like the honkytonk man coming to town, having automatic transmission makes it feel like you are driving a go-kart.
didn´t get stopped by the police in all my years of driving (around 2002/02) and NEVER got a speeding ticket UNTIL the first longer session with this car
it´s like it WANTS to drive fast, not 70 like i should have been going

How is the suspension? It was a bit too cart-like stiff on some roads for me but good for handling (I mean as good as it can get with a car like this).
Before my Bravo I wanted the Astra GTC (150hp) but the only affordable one I found had such a fucking wobbly clutch that I stayed faaar away from that broken piece of junk. The seller was super fishy too. I wish I had found an affordable GTC Luckily the Bravo was fine and 120hp (1.9 common rail diesel) felt really quick After that I swore to myself that I'll never drive anything below 120hp anymore
