You can't say this is just an "experience", it's a full blown game.
I expect several games that are currently in development are going to get a good increase to their budget to become AAA now that HL:A is on the horizon.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."

"a phenomenon."

Well, Arizona Sunshine and Fallout 4/Skyrim. Elite Dangerous looks beautiful in VR and then American Truck Simulator supports it. Not sure about the Euro counterpart.
and I'm like "no way, these people are totally getting sued by Valve, this almost copy pastes the assets and style of Portal 2 (among other Valve games)".

Though she hadn't played the games herself before booking the role, Akagha says she had heard of the game series through her brothers, who are "big gamers, for sure," she adds. "The magnitude of what it was didn't set on me until like two weeks ago," she says. "Which is good. I think if I knew, I wouldn't have been able to do the project. There’s so much pressure and preconceived notions that I think I'd be so in my head."

The star did not speak with Dandridge about the role of Alyx, saying she "leaned heavily on the writing and the world that these characters live in" to form her own "interpretation of what this character is and who she is, as well." Akagha says the response she's received since her role was revealed has been nothing but supportive. "Half-Life fans are the warmest people," she says.
It's been a bit of a whirlwind few months for Akagha, as recording on the upcoming project only began back in September. "With a game like this, recording it too early had us concerned about it leaking," says Sean Vanaman, developer at Valve. Recording is not completely wrapped, but given that the game is set to launch in March, Vanaman says the team is "pretty far down the line" in development.
"Being able to get Ozi back in the booth because the [Alyx's] voice is unedited and coming out of [the player's] head is just a huge advantage for us," he says of the process.
Quote:
Vanaman says that fans can still "expect the same sort of narrative impact that hopefully they received in other Half-Life games."
"If we don't deliver on that," he says, "that would be unfortunate."
Meanwhile, Dandridge - the original Alyx - has liked the fan petition to bring her back.
What I can say? I’m involved
What I can’t say? Literally anything else #HalfLife #valve #vo

So @MerleDandridge
blocks people who congratulate the new Half Life actress playing Alyx.
Merle that is a selfish, petty, and cowardly move. But based on who you are now allegedly dating, Rick Fox. I'm not surprised by your actions. #hl2 #halflifealyx #greenleaf
"With 10M Views in 24 Hours, ‘Half-Life: Alyx’ Has Thrust VR Into the Mainstream Gaming Spotlight"
Quote:
Racking up more 10 million views across YouTube and Twitter in its first 24 hours, last week’s release of the Half-Life: Alyx trailer is likely the single fastest spreading exposure to VR of its kind (the trailer is now at 12.4 million views and counting).
Damn. The thirst for HL is real.

edit: stormlands with a laughable 8k..
you'd think facebook could push these titles into mainstream.

One genre I think would be really nice in VR is a well-made horror game in the style of Amnesia: The Dark Descent or some other haunted house style game that really puts emphasis on atmosphere and don't cheap out with jump scares every 30 second.

If a game is GOOD, people will talk about it / recommend it. It COULD break through. See Terraria & co.
IMO the reality is that VR is used by VERY, very, veryfew people. That number is lower than most people think or the industry leads to believe. A hobby that requires a decent PC + ~ 600 Euro is not something people would afford OR consider worth investing in.
I legit don't know anyone personally that owns a VR headset.
It's a gimmick for most.
Which I'm sure Is mostly due to the VR game library.
Here's hoping Alyx can nudge that in the right direction.
Same but i know lots of ppl who spend stupid amounts of money every month on their cars...
I only ever tried VR on conventions and events and that was allrdy enough to know that i don't want to spend that amount of money to feel sick for a while.

I was on a VR rollercoaster once and it wasn't a great time. As in, a real rollercoaster where they put a HMD on your head so you see fancy fantasy stuff.
It worked better than expected but still hurt a lot and made you thrice as neaseus as the ride would have otherwise.

If I spend 4hrs pissing around in Arizona Sunshine vs The Witcher, why is one a gimmick?
It's probably also because when most people think about VR, they don't immediately think of the few more fully-fledged experiences like Arizona Sunshine or Stormland
They think of games like Beat Saber, GORN or VR Chat.
Which, to be fair, seem to be the type of games that dominate that particular market.
I mean just compare the views you find on youtube for videos that are about Beat Saber or shit like that, and for something like Stormland.

Page after page the "600 euro" cost has been debunked (which mind you started as "900" in this thread), but here we are again
Performance is a non-issue for many. VR was very heavy to run in like 2012, but today people are buying 4K and/or 120Hz monitors.
There are so many games being made to run on the Quest! If an SoC can run them, PC can too..
The only issue has been lack of games, which is changing.
Whether it will succeed, no one knows, of course.

Hah, just the hilarious VR fail videos coming out of that would be great. People trying to wall-walk, jumping into their TVs, kicking their SO in the face... YES PLEASE!

I don't think that cost / performance are the main reasons people are not investing / spending in the VR zone. (Mind you, we could drop that threshold to 200 Euro and it would still be too much for the majority.)
Some people don't feel comfortable wearing a device on their head, some find it silly, some have motion sickness and I am sure the list could go on, as objective as it can.
I DID experience VR over a friend's Vive and it was... cool, new, fun with multiple games / apps. But for some reason - personally - there was never an URGE (or simply desire) to play again or even the plan to buy a set for myself. Even junior - he played same VR games, he's also an avid gamer - was pleased with the whole experience, but not terribly impressed.
Simply because VR is there - like any other product - doesn't mean it's for the masses / for everyone.
