I'm interested with what they come up. I don't think (or hope) they will release some half-assed shit.
hard to say.. i don't feel like valve are particularly in touch with gaming any more. still, even if they've been working on it awhile we could be looking at anything from vaporware to an award winner
they haven't failed on the hardware front so only when they release some footage will we know if we're dealing with mobile VR game or an actual block buster. either way i think it's gonna be pretty hard for them to release anything and meet expectations, VR or otherwise.
VR headset costs less than good monitor ... Anyway, sounds interesting, not what people wanted tho.
i can only imagine they wanted to get vr further off the ground by using the hl name, otherwise they might end up with a stinker instead of a system seller. as one of the vr defensive i would have much preferred a new IP (half-life has too much baggage with it now).
I suppose Valve also wants to push their own expensive VR hardware sales through this.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
"Right now we're building three VR games," Valve founder Gabe Newell confirmed to Eurogamer during a media roundtable at the studio's Bellevue, Washington office.
"When I say we're building three games, we're building three full games, not experiments," he later clarified when asked about Valve's free HTC Vive prototype The Lab.
Quote:
"VR is not going to be a success at all if people are just taking existing content and putting it into a VR space," he said. "One of the first things we did is we got Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress running in VR, and it was kind of a novelty. That was purely a developer milestone, but there was absolutely nothing compelling about it, the same way nobody's going to buy a VR system so they can watch movies."
Quote:
"If you took the existing VR systems and made them 80 per cent cheaper there's still not a huge market, right? There's still not an incredibly compelling reason for people to spend 20 hours a day in VR," Newell stated. "Once you've got something, the thing that really causes millions of people to be excited about it, then you start worrying about cost reducing. It's sort of the old joke that premature cost reduction is the root of all evil."
And the rumor:

It's compatible will other headsets. At this stage Valve aims for VR to grow, regardless of whether one buys their headset or not.
But they might offer the game for free with purchases of Index, who knows.

Well, it's to be expected. Steam is pushing VR and by using the name HL they'll probably sell a couple of headsets. VR for the people is still a looong way off into the future as technology is refined and made cheaper but ever since Oculus Rift was announced it's at least not stillborn as all the earlier attempts were.
They're absolutely right that going for something like this is the only way they're going to get people to get (their, ideally) VR headsets to more than the very limited demographics at the moment - PC/VR enthusiasts with comfortable funds and.. yeah.
I completely agree with Pickup though (don't get all the jabs at him), it's really a big slap in the face for those who have been waiting for a new HL game - I stopped caring a very long time ago.
It's basically twisting the customers' arms into buying VR gear, since VR seems to remain the only purely gaming perspective Valve has.
i hope this gets trashed on as bad as diablo mobile, i have no problem with a vr game, but not making a hl game to play for non vr gamers to come out in a similar timeframe is just a big FUCK U to all the halflife non vr fans, well fuck u too gabe
all u vr folks are going to find out how tiny ur vr scene really is now lol , let the twitter cancels wars begin (round 999)
Valve are pushing VR, why wouldn't they make a VR game to support their hardware? If they are targeting VR then it makes sense to design the game in a way that will be best played that way. To make the game also playable without VR would mean to compromise on the gameplay and deliver an experience that isn't as good as it could be.
I don't have a VR headset but this is probably the final straw that will push me to get one. We all know PC gaming can be an expensive hobby, but we aren't casuals and expect that.

Don't be an idiot, it will be a casual experience when it's a VR game. Might be a higher quality one, but it'll be a casual experience nonetheless. Expecting walking simulator with a few twists. You're essentially paying 900 Euro +/- for this game.......................... Is that worth it?

ohh a full fledged VR game. Finally!
Hopefully it is as good as all the other full fledged VR games like...erm...?!?!? well guess only VR users know those or maybe there arent any.....
This is not a entry in the main series and not Valve's first fail.
Just recently they went with artifact and ppl didnt like it.
They clearly dont care about the fandom but money.
This will be a simplistic game with a simplistic story maybe with a gimmick in it and thats all about it. Forgotten after a month or two.
Those who think otherwise and act as if HL3 got announced dont worry i'll remind you after its released and bombs.(which it will sinc emost ppl DONT use VR)
If they wanted to make a megahit of a game they would just do that.
If they wanted to milk their franchise to make more money or sell their Vr headset with pulling on people's nostalgia strings well that's what this is. No doubt about it.
The quality of the product doesnt matter for them.
Expecting anything extraordinary from this is stupid. Doesnt matter if you own VR or not.
Most ppl that are mad are mad because they waste their time on bullshit like this instead of giving us real games.

See we shall, but i'm gonna be very skeptical about this game (or experience) until proven otherwise.
Yeah, it's quite pathetic to watch if i'm honest. I wonder how low he'll sink
Mate, you just said the cost of a VR headset to play the game is 900+ so excuse me

And who do you think is providing us stats about the VR market, if not Valve? They must have budgeted the game accordingly, they are well aware exactly how big/small the market is. Much better than you do. Pachter v2.0

yeah they budgeted it accordingly.
That's why this game is called Half life Alyx and not Half Life 3 The return of gordon freeman
Yeah, it's quite pathetic to watch if i'm honest. I wonder how low he'll sink

Companies like valve bethesda etc are dropping the ball lately at least in regards to their franchises.
No doubt about that.
Collecting user data and basing your decision on that doesnt mean they know what the userbase wants.
Anyhow be back after this gets released to trashtalk people . *hint hint*
But till then:

Yep, I agree also. The reasonable approach would have been to allow for a standard/non-VR version as well - which would definitely be possible with some adjustments, despite the inevitable "but it's soeinnovative and 100% designed with VR in mind1!" claims from the marketing machine and whatnot. Of course though the company has other financial priorities and missions in mind, and old-time fans sadly aren't part of that.

Please explain how do you play this without VR:

What a silly question. By incorporating normal non-VR mechanics for handling weapons and items of course. Sure, we'll miss out on the "fabulous experience" of using hand controllers to manually pick up a weapon or item but I could live with that just like the other ~99.5% if I believed the game would actually be any good.
This won't be a triple-A title, it will be all about VR which means it will be a VR showcase, not a full-blown Half Life game. There's no point for the developers to spend years and tons of money to create a game that only a tiny minority will even be able to play. Niche.
