2 hours Confused I don't believe that, unless you run Windows 10 on a toaster? I don't think I've ever waited more than 10 minutes for a normal update and 30 minutes for a "feature update". There's 5 PCs/laptops here running W10 (ranging from recent to ~8 years old laptop which is by far the slowest). All modern systems update within 5 minutes normal update and 15 for feature update.

Well, finally installed 1909 forced up somehow and working via Media Creation Tool

Bitch tooked quite a time..15min around even. Good thing stuff has been saved and still in place..

...Now let's see how we'll resist grinhurt

EDIT: When starting the OS, if ya press the key/click on the start button, while having Classic Shell installed, the old W10 menu will pop up.. However, after a few seconds of loading apps etc, the CShell will be recovered..Also Open Shell hasn't been updated since Sept 2018, so no many changes will help that out

1909 was totally quick, the computer just rebooted two times in succession and then it was done.
Didn't even get an update % done screen. Had to check to make sure it was installed.

Classic start in the first thing I install. Be it my machine or any 2012/2016/2019 server I work on for work.
The windows 10 menu annoys me to no end, options are too big, I dont need 1x1 inch squares to open something. Nor any live tiles for anything..
And if I goto programs I don't want to scroll for 20 feet as it lets me know:
"By the way this is all the apps that start with letter 'A'...ooh look the ones that start with 'B' are coming." No thanks, I know the alphabet windows. I dont need you to waste space reminding Adobe is listed under A, before B or C..

If I use something a lot, I put it in a quick launch bar under my taskbar (I also do not like 'pin to start'...ONLY programs running should be in the taskbar buttons area. If nothing is 'open' it should be blank.)

This is exactly as much 'direct and to the point' of a menu as I could want:
 Spoiler:

I want a program search the first few letters and enter. Dont remember the name, one click and I can see all my programs in plain compact text, about 20 at a time.

Maybe I'm honestly missing something or I'm using it wrong? Because I find it far far worse in every possible way I need it to work.

I hardly ever use the start menu. I just use the taskbar to launch my pinned applications, and large desktop folder icons for games, movies etc.

You might already know this, but maybe it helps. With WIN+[number] you can bring up (and open pinned) programs in order from left to right (WIN+1 opens the first). It helps when they're static (pinned) Smile

Fucking Windows Defender re-activated itself and now killed my W10 activator, wich is not one of those "KMS" nor similar, but one that , once patched, it created a HWID file where the .exe file is at

I need help to recover activator but i don't know the name. All i remember is that the options you could choose to activate it were at the top right side of the window

JUST THE NAME, NOT WHERE TO FIND IT

EDIT: I think i've found it. HWIDgen 62.01.. I'll leave it here, though the top right order of stuff seems different..

Do you seriously browse through the programs in the start menu Confused Win key + start typing and enter Razz All important stuff I have pinned to taskbar (which is large enough, I have ~20 pinned and it's not even at half my screen).

I had to do the Media Creation Tool update method (because the WUpdate gave me errors) and it sure tooked some time to do it.. DL from W10 (being on 1903) , then restarting into a blue UI, then it'd get stucked at 23-24% for a good time before it moved out.. Around 2-3 reboots required..Around 15-30min around..

Everything on a SAMSUNG EVO 860 SSD 1TB..."Wow, where's the speed, M$/SAMSUNG?"

Once of the bullet points for Windows 8 was frequent and very fast updates. In a few years time, updates are now horrifically slow. I am on the beta channel (whatever that's called), and the update process takes at least an hour on my 8 core, nvme m2 SSD system. Completely retarded.

Microsoft free upgrade activation server is still up. Install Win 7 and upgrade for a free license. I tested on a PC with SLIC (Win 7) a few weeks ago. Install Windows 7 Ultimate, activate with Win Loader, run Win 10 upgrade = Free genuine copy of Win 10 digital license.

I noticed that my Sidewinder X4 programmable keyboard buttons don't work in games that have the shield icon.

So in this case in Amid Evil and Redout they work, but in Mafia 3 they don't work. Why do some games have this stupid icon in the first place. Is there any way to fix this?

that "icon" means it will run with elevated rights.
WHy does Mafia3 has to run as admin???

Try starting the Sidewinder/MS software for configuring the keyboard as ADMIN and leave it open? maybe that help...

Thats the only thing that comes to my mind..

To the system SSD...C:\Games. I have only one SSD/partition
I have 8 games installed there, but only 2 of them have the shield icon (Mafia 3 and Rime). Maybe when I installed them I didn't run the installer as administrator, maybe that is the problem?

Doesn't work sadly.

I can move the folder from C:\Games to C:\Program Files for example then the keys work again and the symbol disappears, but why? Maybe I need to change some permissions for the Games folder?
edit: well taking ownership and/or giving myself all permissions doesn't work, only moving the folder helps

I would have expected moving folders to work the other way around (less rights needed outside C:\program files\).

I would also expect that installing something as administrator can mean its install requires administrator rights as well.

Unfortunately I'm out of my depth here Sad

Yeah, these rights things on Win10 can be a pain, back when I was messing with apps I noticed there are some protected folders you can't even get access to even as Administrator.
Then I forced some permissions with various shell commands and almost bricked my installation. (had to use system restore)
I miss the good old Win7 in that regard at least I was truly Admin there.

simply launch the application with right click -> launch as admin. its a different type of rights it gets than when launching it via double click + yes

if you do so the program gets elevated rights with all processes it still may launch after its initial launch. if you just double click it it only gets the permission to launch itself.

You can also take ownership of the entire C drive under security->advanced tab for that drive. Give your actual user full control vs falling back to asking for windows version of administrator 'sudo' when it needs permissions, or using "TrustedInstaller" that is the owner (I believe it is by default).

Then when you are logged in as that user anything run as your user (vs system) will have full access to the entire drive.
Now that may be seen as risky by some, as if you run things you shouldn't thing can get permissions they shouldn't. But I go by if your comfortable with knowing you won't do anything stupid, turn off all the things that get in your way that windows has to prevent people from doing something stupid.
