Is this a contest of who is the biggest cynical?
Also, Final Fantasy XV
In development forever and a great fucking concept but very mediocre execution
Cozy roadtrip vibes tho
Special mention No Man's Sky, but who didn't see that coming, plus they pretty much redeemed themselves by now
Also Anthem?

There is no redeeming anything. They're fucking scum and i'll never again buy anything from them. At best i can find the game somewhat enjoyable now, but that doesn't mean i forgive them.

Dragon Age 2
Mass Effect 3
Fallout 4 (To be fair I wasn't expecting much)
Sims 4
X Rebirth
Dawn of War 3
Street Fighter 5
These are all sequels to some of my favourite games of all time.

There's a clear trend in this thread and that is that most overhyped games were sequels which isn't surprising if the original game was a blockbuster.

This year has been solid for me. Maybe that's because I don't have a lot of spare time to play, but I definitely enjoyed RE2, Metro Exodus, Control, Anno 1800 and it seems I'll be able to add at least 1 or 2 more titles now that RDR2 is coming to pc.

Fortnite!
I know how this sounds but it was supposed to be a totally different game with PvE surviving, crafting and base building. I was super excited when they first announced it like 10 years ago to be a cross between Minecraft and Terraria. Yes, there was a single/co-op but it's nothing like it was supposed to be. And when Derpic saw what a big success the BR is, they totally dumped any other content. Or at least I think they did, haven't heard anything about the single player for an year or so.

Aww I totally forgot about that one!
Man until the release my friends and I were actually convinced that game had multiplayer and we thought you could conquer other peoples planets together and war one another.

IW was my first Deus Ex game at the time, and I didn't know Deus Ex 1 existed. So IW was like the greatest game of all time for me. Blew my mind how interesting the levels were, all the paths I could take, the setting/story about conspiracies, etc. Then I played 1 and get why people hated IW. So I'm thankful I got to enjoy IW as well. Might even rank IW higher Mankind Divided TBH.

Then I played the original and was never able to return to IW since then.
But I'll disagree with you on the last part, for all it's shortcomings MD is a far better game than IW. The exploration (in the prague hub alone, shame that was the only one we got) the music, most of the gameplay, even liked where the story was going... still pisses me off how they supposedly cut the game shorter for the SE suits

It's so funny, every year people say the current year is the worst for gaming rose-tinted glasses much |
Or it just gets worse and worse every year |
That's because it is. Games cost more and more money so innovation is almost non-existent due to risk. They change a tried-and-true concept *just* enough for it to be a new title. For young gamers, it's not a big deal since they're not yet burned out on these concepts. For older gamers it's "more of the same". Add DLC, micro transactions, single player slowly being phased out, industry talent slowly disappearing due to being burned out or sick of the state of the industry and this is what you get. It's not being cynical - it's just the way it is. |
To be fair there are still unique and interesting Indie games out there. For examples: "Return of the Obra Dinn", "Papers, Please", "Outer Wilds", "Slay the Spire", "Night in the Woods" etc. But the bigger companies will mostly rely on proven formulas and very rarely risk throwing millions of $$$ in the dark.

The complete list of my gaming disappointments over the years would be so ridiculously long, since it would include most of the heavily consolized sequels that started popping out in the mid-2000s, all the bland departures from interesting concepts, awesomebutton-powered embarrassments, Ubipastas & clones, you name it. Some of the most relevant ones - in random order (although many have already been mentioned).
- I need to be a Durrgon 2: the interesting-ish story absolutely could not redeem the pathetically streamlined meme-like core mechanics and RPG elements, cheap encounters and locations, you press a button and the fun vanishes. The definitive death of Bioware really started from there.
- Oblivion: "member Morrowind? I don't" ~ Xbox 360
- Fallout 4: I expected little and was still let down. The downgrade in terms of RPG elements was absolutely baffling, even coming from the already streamlined Fallout 3.
- The assassination of Splinter Cell by the coward Conviction: no need for explanation, really.
- Hitman Absolution: let's remove everything that makes our franchise fascinating and engaging, it will be great!
- "Deus Ex" Invisible War: the exact moment I realized the apocalyptic impact that the gaming must be more accessible to everyone dogma could have on my hobby.
- Codemasters' Operation Flashpoint reboo: we never really asked for that, then Red River came out and made things exponentially worse.
- Assassin's Creed: I was genuinely hyped for it back then, such a potentially interesting concept/franchise. Unfortunately, Requescat in Pace.
- Star Wars TFU: from the epic JK2/JA to that...thing, not very cool.
- X4 Stillbirth: abandon ship! Itsatrap.jpg
- Tomb Rambo and sequels: rewarding exploration? Nope. Challenging platforming and puzzles? Nope. Cinematic popamole automated tripeA experience? Yes please.
- Thi4f: better draw a veil over that one (a veil that can't jump of course)
- Mafia 3: so painfully repetitive that it made Mafia 2 look like a masterpiece of design.
- Crysis 2: "look how they massacred my boy" - the game. I wonder who did it [console breathing intensifies]
- Resident Evil 5 and especially Resident Quick Time Gears of Evil 6: those were dark times.
- Fahrenheit: an atmospheric interactive adventure with nice detective vibes, what could go wrong? Everything.
- Simcity 2013, The Sims 4, Star Wars Battlefront, nuBattlefields: EA 201X joins the party, the reverse Midas Touch.
There are many other mild to-serious disappointments (Yakuza series, Mass Effect 2/3 + DAI, Monster Hunter, Dead Space 3, Wokenstein 2, Sniper Elite series) or complete trainwrecks that I didn't write (all the modern Calancities, Colon Marines, Syberia 3, DoW3, Andromerda etc long list is long), though recently the biggest one is definitely the tendency to turn everything into a looting hell in order to artificially elongate the gaming time, implement ongoing GAASbage and reduce the experience to a pitiful monetization paradise. Let's hope we can escape from that death sentence, eventually
