Shit day at work, need to vent.
I thought I was up for a kind of promotion, but it backfired on me. It's been simmering for a few months now, someone is retiring and I was constantly reminded by my manager and co that the role could possibly fit me. I didn't even really really want the job, it's pretty much 50% more stress for maybe 20% more money. I don't think I need more money than I have now. More is better, but I think my income is good enough.
So last month we have talks, four candidates, the talk went well (manager + general manager). Today I get a mail from my manager, which simply boils down to "sorry we didn't pick you since you didn't fit the profile, better luck next time". I thought "da fuck you've been grooming me for months at least explain. you're sitting 20 meters away why via mail?". I went to her office, asked for explanation. She came to me with the job, told me I was a good candidate and gave me hopes. Who DID she hire, so I can understand what happened? "Nope can't tell you yet, but I can assure you the other candidate is a better fit". How? Why? "We'll talk about this next month when it's all finished". So I went a bit ballistic at this moment, you're a manager fucker give me some goddamn closure. I don't want to get into detail, it wasn't pretty.
Yeah shit day for a job I didn't even want that much. The rejection does not bother me, maybe the other candidate is awesome, but at least explain that shit. Fuck you bitch

Shit sucks dood
But it kinda reminds me of those PR fuckers when you go to an interview, with the "we'll be in touch, good or bad we'll give you some feedback" and then... nothing. That was a hard lesson to learn, but eventually you do learn it.
However it's quite funny when they call you back months after the fact (when you're already employed) and make you some shit offers like "We need someone right now, you have the profile, let's have a meet!" and your reply is simply "how much", laugh at their answer and/or ask for a ridiculous paycheck, even before the meeting

Yeah thanks, so I'm not abnormal it seems. She's been our manager for a year now, I'm about two years at this company. Maybe she thought about it and didn't want someone who'd critique her, she's very smart but a bit insecure it seems. She's very absent as a manager, I've pointed this out several times in meetings. A whole year is ample time to understand what's going on at your department me thinks, so don't ask stupid fucking questions (just paraphrasing). Pro-tip: most managers don't like employees talking back. During my career I've had 6 managers in 5 companies, and I told 2 of them to go fuck themselves. That's a success rate of 33%! I am generally very polite and I never get angry at work, but when injustice is done to me or a colleague, the crazy sufaces.
Oh well, it's over. At least my team lead is an awesome guy.

Nothing worse than a female boss, men don't respect them, women literally despise them, shit just doesn't work, exceptions aside. They don't have that instinct on how to lead a pack of testosterone monkeys so they go into these temper tantrums where they start yelling, hilarious.

@garus : well, seems there are worse companies. It's sad, but most managers I've met (IMO of course) were barely qualified for what they did.

Read the goddman post, it's a woman! As I said she offered to plan a meeting when the other candidate is announced, I declined. I have no idea whether this is standard practice, but I think it's weird. Just tell me in 10 mins who you did hire and why, simple as that. I'm not someone who plays office politics, so I basically said "no thank you I have better things to do" and she got offended.
Case closed, this topic was just to vent a little.

Unprofessional or not, what's done is done. Just do your best to forget it. You did say you didn't want it. I think you absolutely did, but that doest matter.

The problem is that many such similar things happen in the workplace inadvertently or not. Regardless, all you can do now is keep your head down and move forward. Thinking more and more about it will do you zero favours.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

Part of my job is judging employees to see what they can handle and also to help chose new potential employees.
The first few times, I was brutally honest. I told them straight why they didn't get chosen but instead of accepting it, thanking me and moving in, they kept debating me. No, I'm wrong, they want to prove I'm wrong, etc. etc. It gets you nowhere. Most people refuse to admit their faults and pointing them out will only cause you headaches.
Two weeks ago I laid out a plan to promote an employee of packaging department to become head of the department - handle deliveries, handle stock, load and unload trucks, make delivery forms, check all good before they leave, etc. Then another employee comes to me and starts to bitch for ages and ages about why we didn't talk to him, why the other worker got the job, etc.
After him badgering me for an hour I finally cracked and completely told him in detail WHY he's not suitable. Truth is, this guy is mentally not capable of the job. Because he can't handle pressure, because he can't do several things at once before shutting down, because he rushes through things without making sure everything is done well, because he sucks at preparing his job list, because he sucks at calculating, because he's terrible at communicating, etc. He NEEDS someone to hold his hand and to check his work and then he's a good worker but absolutely NOT to be in a leading position.
I told him all this. The result? The guy's performance dropped. He then started to bitch how I demotivated him. I wanted to strangle the cunt.
Honestly, let's face it: you can do your utter best and still not be as good as someone else. This is not a contest for who works the hardest. It's about who is most suited for a job. For higher positions, being able to handle stress, being able to handle everything thrown at you is a must. Most people can't be taught these things - it's part of your character. And yes it sucks when you have a really good worker who would make an ideal promotion but because he's lacking these traits, you know it would do no-one any good...

You tried to explain yourself face to face instead of some standard email (the mail I got was as standard as it comes), I can respect that. How the employee reacts is out of your control obviously. I thought it was very disrespectful towards me, it's my own manager.

look at the moneyball scene how u fire someonefor example, the fewest words possible, cause any extra word the employee will look for a double meaning , there is no debate in management. they arent ur friends. if they are, they doing it wrong, pure cold logic, we think we found someone better for the bottem line

None of the things you've mentioned about your boss was disrespectful btw.
You're just being highly emotional and unprofessional about it. That's all. |
Its easy to expect people to be robots when you're looking at it from the outside. Its off what you said, but i cant really fault him either. Shitty situation for sure.

In this case it is true though, but you're a person and it happens. I'd feel more sad for one who would just be fine and shrug it off like nothing.
