I mean, 1080p is still used by over 60% of steam users but the industry went on to 1440p YEARS ago and 4k at least 2-3 years ago. Tv's skipped 1440p altogether so this makes 1440p on pc a stop gap resolution. Come back in a few years and all monitors will be 4k 60/144hz... which is weird since we started getting good 4k framerates and then ray tracing bumped it down to 1080p again.
For me, even 1080p was fine at 27" but small elements were quite pixelated, 1440p was better but still required a lot of aa. 2160p is just for people preferring sharper/less aliased graphics. I've got 2160p monitor myself because all resolutions look good on it and if I can run 4k, it's extra detail. Also it helps that 4k ips panels have least glow for now. |
Artifical standards pushed by TV manufactures to sell you a new TV have nothing to do with what games are made for. You said it yourself, most steam users still have 1080p.
Until consoles can actually play real 4k in high framer
ates in AAA games, it's not a standard for gaming.
4k isn't event a standard for movies, you are watching 2k in the cinemas and upscaled 4k on Bluray. |
It looks nice in some games 
I've been using 4k downsampling to 1080p since forever. Finally getting a 4k monitor makes some games really shine. Either games with no proper anti aliasing or just with a lot of detail. Some games look EXACTLY as they did on 1080p and it's not always worth it. But as a single player gamer it's ok to have. 1440p 144hz is probably better all around and I've had few of those monitors but these always have terrible bleeding and other image flaws that 60hz 4k monitor does not have. And 4k at 27" makes fonts and desktop look like vectors. It's pretty nice at 150% scaling. 40-60hz freesync with this lg unit I have is a nice bonus too! All in all - it is a bit waste of power but nothing forbids me from playing at 1800p, 1440p or even 1080p since integer scaling is here oficially (and was before with an app).
Also - I think 1080p 240hz is way more impressive than 144hz 1440p. But that's probably because I've had 240hz gsync monitor for few months before few 1440p 144hz monitors.... Fluidity and motion clarity of 240hz panel is mind blowing even on desktop. At that point, 144hz felt like small upgrade over 60hz compared to 240hz. But all in all - after years I've decided to pursue image quality (at least for now)

For anyone with RTX gpu cards, you can get Control and new Wolfenstein game on ebay for 10$. I know, it's EGS and Bethesda Launcher, but it's still a good price.

Nvidia coupon can only be redeemed in Sep 9-12.

So benchmarks say it runs shite on Pascal and GCN. Thats what you get when Nvidia has their hands in development. Ah well, will test on my Vega 64 when I get home in 2 days.

Screenshots are misleading. RTX on especially with DLSS looks like a.. Because there is way too much noise. (I am not talking about film grain which I turned off) Noise level becomes acceptable when you stop and wait a bit, similar to path tracers around but in motion it is terrible.
