I saw a few good titles with SUPERBIT on the cover. I look the defenition but it doesnt say much. Do you have better sound or just video quality is better?
Here's what found for those who never heard of it
The Superbit titles utilize a special high bit rate digital encoding process which optimizes video quality while offering a choice of both DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. These titles have been produced by a team of Sony Pictures Digital Studios video, sound and mastering engineers and comes housed in a special package complete with a 4 page booklet that contains technical information on the Superbit process. By reallocating space on the disc normally used for value-added content, Superbit DVDs can be encoded at double their normal bit rate while maintaining full compatibility with the DVD video format.

Superbit maximizes image-quality, and removes all the extra stuff (commentary, behind the scenes, etc).
Audio quality is usually on par with what's available in regular DVD:s, sometimes actually a bit more limited. It's mostly about the image quality here.

Both sound and picture are critical when it comes to getting into a movie.
Thats why i dont go to the theatre, shit quality picture and sound, imo

Well one caught my eye, Black hawk down and we all know how fuckin awesome the sound is in this movie but if the SUPERBIT edition doesnt have better sound, fuck that then. I'll get the 3 disc edition instead cause i think it got DTS on it and DTS is what is all about

i have 5 superbit flicks, and i concider them all excellent quality, certainly better than the non superbit released versions... ill only get superbit if i concider the visual and audio aspects of the film to be WORTH it (ie visual effects films 0 i have 5th element, starship troopers, das boot and mummy returns... and a 5th film im not prepared to admit...  )
basically, get superbit if its a film you really feel warrants it - they 'tend' to be worth it but you cant go wrong by checking out dvd review sites to see if the video quality is significantly improved and worth giving up the bonus features for... personally i think they should just make all superbit dvds, superbit DELUXE editions, and chuck all the bonus crap onto a second dvd... seems really silly not too.

well, one must make exceptions given how dated the source material is, etc etc, but in my eyes, having seen the regular release, this is as good as its ever looked, and contains both dolby digital and dts german audio, and surround sound english, the film is spread over 2 discs, and is the directors cut running @ PAL 216 minutes
side note: this film is awesome, im going to have to make time and try to watch it again soon... best submarine film ever, and ranks among the best war films ever made imo.

I dunno Superbit doesnt look all that much better, especially since your losing sound quality for a lil better quality picture. I'll stick with reg, crystal clear dvd's and svcds.

Losing sound quality?
Its just the directors comentary and such that gets removed for space.
Thats what i thought anyways.

some dvd comparisons ... as you can see superbit is clearly superior or at the very least equal ... but only downside is no extras because all the space on the disk is used to get the bitrate as high as possible ... Actually, it seems like most new dvds today have like only the movie on one disc and the extras on the second... so basically the same thing as superbit.

all superbit dvds contain high quality dolby digital and dts audio streams... superbit give you superior audio and video, at the cost of bonus features... SOME superbit dvds, however, are superbit 'deluxe' editions, which keep virtually all bonus features on a seperate disk... hollow man is an example of this.

for a start, calm the hell down.
second, not all superbits are worth it, thats why i said, personally, i always check first to see if there is an increased quality between the two.... sometimes there just ISN'T, which is useless i know, but get over it. believe me, on some films u really do see the difference. bhd just isn't one of those films.

yeah, that was my point as well. The BHD collectors edition has almost an IDENTICAL bitrate to the superbit.
When dvds first started coming out, and we had mostly one-disc releases with everything on one disc, superbit was much better in terms of video quality. check out jurassic park -- the difference in bitrate is like 5.6 mb/s vs. 7.8 mb/s -- over 35% of an increase. take this with a grain of salt of course, because you need a good tv to see any difference.
Now with multi-disc dvd releases, the first disc is basically the entire disc with video+sound+menu + nothing else=high bitrate. so there isn't a need for any superbit releases as long as these exist, since they become basically just a marketing ploy.

well yes and no. some releases have pointless additional audio tracks and and over the top menu systems and often do shift part of the special features onto the first disc... superbits remove all additional audio tracks except the native ones (or if they are foreign, seem to keep an english dub as well, but lower quality than the original languages)
yes, in part, superbits are a way of double dipping by re-releasing dvds, but i will always maintain that SOME superbits do contain noticable superior picture and audio in comparison to previously released versions of the film. this is why its always important to check dvd review sites before buying ANY dvds.

yeah, superbit are the only people to realize that dolby 2.0 track is pointless, since 5.1 is automatically downmixed to the 2.0 track on most dvd players/stereos.

Look at the text on the guys name tag on picture comparison 2. It does look slightly crisper using superbit. Not much, but to me it looks a little better. Not better enough to buy a new ver of the movie imo.
