It's DRM-free. you can install it and wipe the EG store if you want, then just add it to steam.
This is the simple reason I will download it and then buy it once it arrives on Steam in a year or whatever their exclusive deal is set for. I am all for the Devs cashing in on that guaranteed Epic money as I am sure it will help start their next project but for me, they just won't see my money till it is on Steam.
I do kind of wish I was a Twitch streamer though as they seem to give out keys to almost anyone as I saw a streamer with 500 followers playing it earlier with only like 5 people watching so it seems they are not really targeting those bigger streamers as they would probably have to end up paying them to play it.

well look on the bright side, you don't have to beta test the game and the game will probably be better by the time we get it
i honestly don't know anything about this game.. i don't know if it will match up to the combat in elite dangerous or even xwing/freespace, but i really like the look of the cockpits. 99% nostalgia? too bad they slapped it on the epic shit, but i'll still play it on day 1, denuvo notwithstanding.

The game is practically an updated version of Wing Commander Privateer
I think they figure that even if they get a handful of sales out of it, it's a win for them. And it's probably the sort of game that really works for streaming, given that so much of it is procedural, but also because it's a tough type of game to sell to those that don't know the genre in a 60 second trailer.

^ Definitely giving it the ol' five-finger discount try, loved Freelancer back in the day and if this is even half as good (and it sure looks to be far better than that) it'll be good times.

My biggest problem with the original (apart from the fact that space combat was like naval ships), was the poor ship selection / upgrade paths. Honestly, that doesn't seem to have been remedied very much in this one - with only 9 ships total. Freelancer was definitely bigger in scale and immersion factor than Rebel Galaxy - but I'm still looking forward to playing it (yarrr style of course).
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

9 ships may be fuck all, but they all have unique cockpits and what not. i imagine they also have unique sound and upgrades too. whether the unique ships will make up for the loss in variety i have no idea, although the idea of having less variety for more unique ships really leans better toward simulator games rather than arcade ones.
The difference this time is they will apparently be supporting modding ships in, so that should help (especially for those of you waiting 12 months for a Steam version).

nice, provided the game gets a bit of traction we'll likely see some nice shit added. did they mention anything beyond modded ships?

Nothing specific that I can recall. It was a few months back now in one of the live streams the dev (Travis?) did. I recall him mentioning something about providing model exporters for 3DS Max and the like, so I would think that would also open up the possibility of stations, planets, characters, etc. but I don't really know for sure. And presumably textures and sound effects must also be on the table. But what accesses there is to other stuff like scripting, maps, etc. I don't know.
How popular the game turns out to be probably dictates what will be possible, since if enough people are interested then the community will make their own tools, regardless of official support.

Likewise, another problem that the first one had in my opinion was repetition. It's difficult to avoid the rinse 'n repeat effect in the long run, but I do hope the new one can bring more variety/surprises that don't give that grindy sensation anymore. Everything else looks promising (as long as the pew-pew ain't excessively derpy ).

i think its kind of hard to say at this point because i'm getting mixed feels from reviewers.
at one point they are saying the game is hard, but at the same time i've only seen footage of the player melting ships by holding down the fire button
if the combat feels repetitive the game could turn out really boring, but most people seem to think the game is kinda fun.
although i have a tolerance for elite dangerous, i didn't get all that far in rebel galaxy for similar reasons. lack of depth + repetition are not a good combination.
If you watch that intro version I posted on the previous page, you can see the difficulty options. The higher difficulties strip out the bonuses and aids if you want the super hardcore old school experience. Although of course I'm not sure how much that really helps with longevity. It's essentially an open world game, and it has all the same problems as any of those. If you are looking for a tight linear narrative campaign, this is not it. Still, it's probably good for a few hours of cruising around, blowing shit up until you get bored.
