Was playing some Mordhau earlier tonight when I unexpectedly got the Windows shutting down message between loads. The system restarted itself cleanly. I had enough time to run Malwarebytes, Windef, and TDSS killer (all clean) before it did it again. Also, Temps seemed normal. Now I can't get more than 3-5 seconds into boot before it power cycles and restarts.

PSU self test fan and Cpu cooler spin up normally. Toggled BIOS to no avail. Board error code is no help as it reboots at a different point each time.

Halp!

Does it even try to load windows? If yes shut it down while it tries to load windows by holding the power button. Do it 3 times, then maybe you get to the recovery. From there you have a few options. Like safe mode.

Or if you have an installation medium (usb) you can boot that and repair it from there.

I've seen similar issues with bad memory sticks. If your motherboard has an extended memory test button, run that. If not or want to test more thoroughly, create a bootable USB of memtest https://www.memtest86.com/download.htm and run that.

If memory passes, it could be your PSU failing to deliver enough voltage to your CPU or motherboard chipset. Undo any overclock you might have performed in the bios and try booting.

It doesn't get to windows load, restarts mid post so can't pull up bios. Sometimes it lasts about a second, sometimes 2 or 3. So strange how windows forced a shutdown twice like that. Id have thought if it was the PSU giving out it'd just poof off.

Is it possible the cpu cooler pump cramped out even though the radiator fan still functions? Temps seemed fine the first time it rebooted though.

Guess I'll start yanking out RAM tomorrow. Sad

If it stops mid post and reboots, it sounds like power issues more than memory issues. Try reseting your bios by using jumper or removing the bios battery for a minute and then putting it back (while the PC is shut down).

I'll echo the sentiment that it intuitively seems like a power issue.

With that said I've had ridiculous experiences with hardware where nothing made sense whatsoever and symptoms pointed to a few particular issues while the solution was something waaaaay different and unrelated.

Try to borrow a PSU if you can.

Indeed. This is why I dont think it is a PSU issue. The PSU seems to work since it stays on.

If resetting the bios by taking out the battery doesnt work and trying different memory sticks doesnt work, there may be an issue with the mobo.

Wait, you think this is a technical issue? Confused
It's just mordhau's new bullyhunter protection kicking in. Cooldown is 48h, so just chill dude Razz

Even a single degraded capacitor in a PSU can cause serious problems on whatever output line it's connected to and cause the voltage to go out of limits which will inevitably lead to many different symptoms . It can also be capacitors on the motherboard giving out. In the end it can be any of the components in your PC.

You'll simply have to do follow the old hardware troubleshooting principle of disconnecting everything that isn't absolutely necessary to boot up the PC (incl. keyboard, mouse, case fans - leave the side panel off, use only one stick of RAM - switch to another stick if it doesn't work) and then go from there.

If you can't boot with PSU-Motherboard-CPU-RAM then you've narrowed it down to one of those parts and will have to see if you can temporarily replace the PSU and/or the motherboard to see if either of those are bad.

Another thing to quickly do is pop the case and look at the bios POST indicators, then look in the manual or online at what stage does it reboot.

My two ridiculous experiences with hardware leading to reboots / nothingness at boot

- Faulty case power and reset buttons. They weren't fully depressing, causing power offs / reboots.
- Faulty case fan. When it was connected to the MB via FAN header or to PSU via MOLEX connector the fan was spinning, but there was nothingness at boot just a blinking underscore symbol.

Nowadays, during diagnostic always disconnect PC case buttons from MB and all case FANs Very Happy

So, a bit of an update...

Started unplugging stuff one by one to find a culprit. Failed.
Plugged in old 750w psu from previous system - something on the board popped and burned - so we never get to find out whether it was the board or PSU at fault. Sad

I really wanted to wait till 2020ish to build a new system, but I'm without choice now. Being jury rigged to this awful bare minimum laptop is torture.
