No, their strategy is "we don't even need customers any more, Epic guaranteed our profits so it doesn't matter whether they are pissed or not and whether they install anything or not."

Long term never mattered.

It's always the initial sales period even the first week and not hitting some ridiculous sales target expectation, granted this isn't being pushed by some larger publisher but Epic still paid them enough so even with total 100% refunds they would still be good economically.

Gamers forget or move on and then in a year and with a discount to entice new sales the Steam version will probably sell well too even if review bombing and forum criticism might stem things a bit, I think they're quite aware of the consequences although longer term their rep and the ability to drive further backer projects is kinda shot because the hardcore loyal fanbase that actually funded the game no longer really exists since they were kinda fucked over in what three or so ways at least?

Let's see they probably don't get the revenue extras from Fig that Epic now caused with their 100% of the backer amount and who knows much more. (They're still set if they get 100% refunds which they won't even if there's been a fair amount of these too but that's telling already for how much Epic paid.)

There's no longer a Steam or GOG version nor is early backers honored for getting keys to these and it's all pushed by a yearly Epic store exclusivity from how it sounds like and it's from backer responses that they even did the refund thing from what I'm hearing but through a convoluted third party.

Linux is also out as is Mac though Mac support is coming to the Epic store later on but Linux is still going to have to wait until the Steam or GOG versions are available before they can play it short of just pirating the game and throwing out the client heh well that doesn't really sound too terrible either.

Overall loyalty and support to the dev and this project and from backers is also quite damaged, sales might keep them afloat but securing investment for a sequel or a different project? There's a problem with that if they don't get a publisher.

EDIT: Which I see now that you mentioned already, yeah plans and funds for additional titles is a bigger question mark unless sales are REALLY good and well the game might be a more niche one for what's currently really popular and selling or generating revenue through F2P and add-on content.

I think they realized that this type of game would not allow them to fund anything else. Apparently they were the ones who approached Epic. It was a calculated move and they thought it through.

Yeah, it's not like a Larian game that is mainstream and fills bank vaults. Poker Face
Pretty sure that calculated move and thinking it through didn't help with foreseeing how their customers felt about it... sure, even if no one would buy it now they'd be okay... but their name is quite tarnished.

Good luck with the next project I'd say... but I'm sure they thought it through. Smug

They got way less than Larian got in 2013 (700k vs 900k).

Not a deal breaker but it shows that they could have been pretty skeptical about their sales. And it shows that there is way less interest in a game like Phoenix Point. Larian's games are way more mainstream (relatively) than a lovecraftian horror themed xcom style tactics game.

There's no "lovecraftian horror theme" in this game any more. It's indistinguishable from FiraXCOM these days and those games sold tons of copies on PC.

They just don't have any faith their game is any good and as such won't appeal to many people. Same reason they took the M$ deal. It's not a good sign at all that they're so desperate.

Larian made hardcore RPGs and Phoenix Point is an nu-XCOM clone Laughing

I think that the money from funding just run dry so they went for Epic.

I came across a somewhat old mail from the devs regardingg this game. As we all know now they've made an exclusive deal with the Epic store to distribute their game. It's probably already been reported on here somewhere on these pages but it was news to me anyway. All current backers are to receive a years worth of free DLC, a free season pass basically. Yay I guess Razz

Exclusive Epicfail == Instant Yarr. They only have themselves to blame as far as I'm concerned. Wink

I read somewhere that the game is available on the XBOX Game Pass pointing once again that the exclusivity deal is all about not allowing these games on Steam...

How so? These guys actually allowed me to refund my purchase after they announced the Epic switch.

And what does that have to do with anything? I'm not talking class action lawsuits, I'm talking possible suits against Epic for their business practices.

My apologies. I assumed you were talking about refunding as it's a pretty big deal with people wanting to refund after learning that publishers are signing exclusiveness. These guys were very good about allowing it. Other companies, not so much.

Simply throwing more money at a problem doesn't necessarily solve it faster (or at all). If your game is 3rd rate shovelware, recruiting more devs is not magically going to make it a smooth, polished experience.
