|
 |
I'm planning on upgrading my NAS Server and making it more "professional" at the same time.
My configuration includes:
- 11x WD Red 4Tb in total
- Ryzen 5 1600
- 32Gb DDR4 RAM
- X370 Mobo
My current plan is using either a Raid60 setup or a 2xVDEV Raidz2, in both cases using one hot-spare disk in the same case (other spare disks are in boxes).
I'm torn between the two solutions, because I know a lot about how to implement it on Linux from scratch (mdadm raid6, mdadm raid 0, LVM2, cryptsetup, filesystem...), but I know next to nothing about ZFS.
Many sources describe ZFS is extremely RAM intensive and I'd actually like to save RAM for VMs or other Services / Applications, rather than giving the majority of it to ZFS (I don't see the point).
I have separately an ICY BOX 2x 6Tb drives in encrypted RAID0 just for bare data backup, which I'm gonna upgrade to 2x 12Tb once the prices on 12Tb drives fall, also I don't have so much netto data yet anyways, since I haven't upgraded the NAS yet.
The goals are to have reasonable data protection, as I store important documents and my private fotos (long term life "archive", e.g. vacations, baptism, weddings, etc), backups, as well as lon-critical data ofc.
Performance isn't an issue, since both read/write speeds are bottle-necked by my Gigabit-Ethernet cable connection (max 119Mb/s read/write).
The real performance is only noticable when connecting local drives, like for backups, but even then the true perfomance is limited by USB 3.0 bandwidth.
For Raid60 I could expand the disks per raid6 group easily (I'd had to switch Case & Mobo again),
while I heard that you cannot expand the number of disks in a VDEV group in ZFS.
(You had to create a whole new VDEV group with the same number of drives as the others / several disks at once.)
My default postion is Raid60 as of now in terms of flexibilty and simplicity.
Are there any people with ZFS experience who can sell me the alternative solution, and why?
Change my mind why 2xVDEVs in Raidz2 is better.
EDIT: BTW this is the setup I'm talking about...
Raid60:
2x Raid6 groups a 5x 4Tb drives,
then connect the 2x Raid6 groups with Raid0 for one 2x 5 drives data pool.
Similar for ZFS:
2x Raidz2 VDEVs a 5x 4Tb drives,
the two Raidz2 groups are then striped into one data pool of 2x 5 drives (same as Raid0).

Why not use btrfs? zfs is known to be a very memory depending, and I doubt you need what it has to offer. If snapshotting is what you need, btrfs will cover that.
Edit: Ah, you said encryption...

You have very low RAM compared to storage itself. ZFS should be used with pretty much 1GB ram per 1 TB of storage.
RAID-Z2 all the way in your setup. Z1 might be too risky because repairing 4TB drive is taking quite some time.
