He actually did it! MQ Remastered was picked up and licensed for freeware distribution by Square-Enix. Jake has not only released the latest 3.1.x version, but it's also coming out on iOS and Android too. The only downside is that the installer requires a key, which you get for buying any title from SE. I've already contacted Jake to ask for a key, considering I've got a dozen SE titles on my Steam account and FFVIII registered on their website, so hopefully he gets back to me. Still... I see he hasn't lost his propensity for silly installer DRM >_<
To many people, yeah, but it has a special place in my heart That and the RPGMaker remake expands on it very nicely, improving a lot of the older failings, but still keeping the MQ charm and music. I haven't received a reply to my email though.. so meh.. Jake isn't exactly the fastest guy around but still, I want to play! I can "extract" the installer (it appears to be a 7z installer) but then you get a [0] encrypted 750MB file that can't be opened.
A sad turn of events, but it seems like FFMQ-Remaster wasn't licensed by SE and Jake's sales were illegal and fraudulent, his company (Dark Design) was even purchased by Kisareth Studio, who were to publish FFMQ-Remaster and who later announced that he provided them with fraudulent documents and files, so was subsequently removed. Apparently both SE and Kisareth are actually pursuing legal action - meanwhile, his site and FB pages have gone and his Twitter account has been suspended. Not deleted, but actually suspended
We are actively pursuing the matter alongside Square-Enix concerning the matter of the "Final Fantasy Mystic Quest HD Remake", and we are confirming that Mr. Jackson formerly of Dark Design Games has provided fraudulent documents to us and misrepresented himself. We are in full cooperation with Square-Enix on this matter.
It is confirmed by Square-Enix that Jake Jackson formerly of Dark Design Games has defrauded us (especially in terms of our resources/materials/personnel/money), and the public-at-large, about his activities. Any and all projects created by Mr. Jackson/Dark Design games linked to any Square-Enix IP are to be considered fraudulent, and we strongly advise everyone not to send any money or purchase anything in regards to this now and in the future. We also strongly advise everyone not to purchase or support any future projects created by Mr. Jackson/Dark Design Games.
We also deeply appreciate and thank Square-Enix for taking the time to speak with us, and resolving this matter as much as possible. We hope to one day work with them on a future project, and wish them the very best with their impending release of Final Fantasy XV.
And then a followup podcast/vlog/thingy where the Kisareth staff talk about what happened and why;
A bust-up between Jake and Kisareth;

I went away on holiday for a few weeks and come back to find out that John Sierra had contacted my cousin asking where I was worrying the hell out of her. Take this video down now before I sue you for defamatory. Since you guys contacted one of my relatives (which is really shallow of you) I took it upon myself never to contact you again. I'm glad you have deleted the game because it was my own work that I worked hard on for four years. It would have been nice working with you guys further but you have all shown your true colors. I have already reported this video to Facebook so expect it to go down. I was the one who deleted my twitter account because of harassment. I will take the game and sell it to Square Enix one day as they promised and have the whole amount of money to myself. Goodbye Kisareth Studios, I wish you well in the future. Not.
1) Square-Enix Europe Legal told us directly you created a fake contract, and even tried to pawn it off on them as real. They explicitly told me that your "supposed" relationship with them was all a lie.
2) Most of the graphical and audio assets you actually STOLE from some great and talented individuals like LeoHightower. You claimed you did all the work yourself, when in fact, you ripped off the audio from authors from OCRemix amongst other artists on the 'net.
3) If anyone looks at the old Twitter account you had, it'll say "Suspended". Not deleted or taken down of your own accord. It was suspended, you're a confirmed fraud.
4) I would be MORE than glad to have you in court one day, Jake. Because not only did you make us waste time and resources on a project that was never cleared by SE, you stole money from us as well for an item that you never gave a receipt to us for. Not only do we have a significant claim against you, so does SE if they ever choose to go that route.
5) The whole world now knows of your false claims, Jake. You defrauded those people who bought into your scam with the "Pre-Orders" for MQHD. Thankfully, they can get their money back by claiming you committed fraud, which you did. You think this one video is the only thing out there? Go onto Kotaku, Gamespot, and any number of forums and they'll all say pretty much the same thing...you're a fraud...and you scammed people.
Finally, you can try to report this video as much as you like, it's not defamatory if it's all facts. Which this is. All factual. All the cold, hard truth. You even THINK of a court action against anyone, and I'll make sure there's a class-action lawsuit filed against you on our behalf, on the behalf of those people you defrauded, and on SE's behalf.
You're not well, Jake. Not in the head at least to do this sort of thing to people. Don't like the truth? Don't come over here. That's what we deal in. That's our true colors. We get to the truth. We take care of our people, of our customers and potential customers. We don't scam them. We don't defraud them.
Such a strange and unfortunate saga as the game itself was truly great, it was a thoroughly enjoyable remake ( toni <3) of one of my favourite guilty pleasure classics, he improved upon the original and made it a joy to play ... but it seems this came at the cost of many burned bridges. Used assets stolen from talented RM creators, wholesale ripping soundtrack from OST and OCRemix, creating fraudulent contracts and documents and my own personal annoyance, the intrusive and idiotic DRM in his installer. Still, since it's not a saleable product and is just a fan remake without any legal standing in the world, I don't feel any which way about sharing the slightly-not-fucked version of the game that doesn't use some insane bizarro cryptoprotection that relies on creating a whole new temporary virtual HDD from which to run the game from

From Dark Design: Mystic Quest Remastered is todays' adaptation of the classic Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest title which was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was rebuilt from the ground up and does its best to keep as much as the original as possible, while also providing a set of new and welcome changes. A true recreation of the classic RPG experience
Right off the bat, from the looping theme song to the graphics, Mystic Quest Remastered takes you back 20 years when things were much simpler in terms of visuals and gameplay but still plenty of fun.
It relies on good looking pixel art, exploring revisits the top-down bird's eye view, and interaction and movement are done using a handful of keys. The combat system is pretty much the same, with the exception that in Mystic Quest Remastered you can have up to four characters fighting together and the HUD layout is somewhat different. Equip your heroes with the items you want and fight the evil that lurks all around
Just like in the original, monster random encounters no longer exist and are replaced with stationary minions. Fighting them is easy but defeating them, well that's a different story. In Mystic Quest Remastered you still rely on a good battle plan and the proper time to engage because some monsters are simply too tough to beat at a low level.
Fortunately, your characters can be equipped with the items you pick up along the way. Potions and spells still play a huge role in the game and using them can completely turn around the outcome of a battle. Relive your childhood game in a new way or try a solid recreation of a true RPG
On a closing note, you have to play Mystic Quest Remastered to really appreciate it. Of course, for the true Final Fantasy fans some things might not entirely please but looking at the bigger picture, it's an honest overhaul of a classic.
NOTE:
To be able to install and play the game, you must have a purchased SQUARE ENIX title in your possession. You can visit the developer website for more information about obtaining a Mystic Quest Remastered registration key.
http://download.cnet.com/Mystic-Quest-Remastered/3000-7536_4-76208175.html Full link to the latest publicly available (3.1.1.0) build but has DRM up the ass and still creates the temporary virtual drive. Installer doesn't require a key any more but trying to run the game creates an X: drive with the contents; aboutthisdrive.txt and mqrm_cookedpc.exe
Quote:
This is a virtual Tiger (TrueCrypt) drive that stores the Mystic Quest Remastered cooked executable.
We use tiger so that the executable is always on drive X, making saves (and cloud saves) compatible between version changes. Previously, major MQRM version changes would break save games, with using drive X, this is no longer the case.
Tiger (Square Enix build) uses portions of TrueCrypt code, which is open source.
And then the game fails because it tries to remotely authenticate, which can't be done since DDG/Jake has done a runner Anyway, here's my non-fuck-you version;
This is my slightly older 3.1.0.0 version, no key needed, just download and run and it should work just fine. While it's not the 4.0.0.0 HD Remaster that was on sale temporarily before the fraud was discovered and it was shutdown, this is the best version I've posted in the thread so far. I didn't get the HD Remaster because I didn't have the cash to buy it when it was on sale, I guess that was both lucky and unlucky eh? I wonder if someone that DID buy it managed to strip the ridiculous email authentication DRM and upload the build?
3.1.0 is worth playing, it radically improves upon 2.0.4 in every way I'm hoping, in vain most likely, that 4.0 was sent out to people before it was removed and then we can get a release somehow.
Oh and speaking of Final Fantasy; my whole life is a lie!. I always believed that, it was as common a fact and history (even repeated in every "History of FF" series, book, article, etc...) as any.. and it turns out to be false
Still hadn't got around to it, twas in my waitlist
Was about to play it until I heard about the 4.0 version, hoping it would surface some day or DRM getting removed. Don't think I'm going to wait for that seeing what happened.
And I also thought the name was because them having a last shot with the game. Always thought they just kept on going because of the success off their gamble xD
They might like their efu efu, I think the Fainaru Fantajī has also a nice ring to it.

Nope that was actually Seiken Densetsu 1 the first game in the Mana seriies.
This is about Mystic Quest Legend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Mystic_Quest
I kinda liked it as a kid it was my first JRPG apart from the SaGa games on Gameboy (released as Final Fantasy Legend in the west)
I know this thread is super old, but would anyone happen to still be carrying a copy of version 1.7a or older? I would really like to still try this out but didn't like the direction 2.x went in.
