Game looks good and I like Three kingdoms setting but there is no way that I will give any money to CA. I stopped after Rome 2. I hate this stupid DLC fest (paid blood etcl.)

Same. I swore off TW after Rome 2. Then I fell for Thrones of Britannia and it was just regrets all around due to the half baked features.
And I love ROTK. In the 90s ROTK IV on PC was the game I was super addicted to. Then ROTK VIII for the PS2.
Too bad Koei keeps changing up the formula, I think 8 was a good base to build upon / expand.
Yea ROTK 8 is one of my fav strategy games of all time, I loved starting out as a no-name officer and climbing up the ranks, changing allegiances, backstabbing and starting coups to create my own kingdom. There was infinite replay value and sadly the series never really re-captured the genius of 8 since then.
Sorry for of topic question, but is there a good book (or series of books) that handles the 3 Kingdom era? I'm very interested in this part of Chinese history, but it doesn't seem easy to find a good (and complete) book about this (and in English, obviously )

Yeah, that was the best part. I probably only played an established character / ruler 3 or so times with the rest of the games starting out as a nobody traveling around China and making a name for myself.
There really needs to be more games like that. The power up kit for that even let you get married and have kids and what not, but I think that was PC only.
The most fun I had with ROTK IV was creating a family and having them work for different warlords so my character would end up dueling his dad / brother / sister during wars. That was a load of fun.
Though avoid the kindle one as it's not the same book based on the reviews.
My ROTK experience was from my grandma who was Chinese though she only talked about the general stuff as I don't think she really knew the details. Though her store did have an orange skinned Guan Yu sculpture for good luck.
so is this another thrones of britannia where all the cool sounding features are actually half baked with no depth?
and is melee combat still shit with the blobfest? same engine as empire?
and does the AI still pull massive army stacks out of its ass?
1. This is markedly better than Britannia in terms of the politics system getting an overhaul to where now it's almost critical. Also the fact that each faction earns its own unique resource which can be spent in unique ways, ex - manipulating political standing or annexing cities without having to fight.
2. Same shitty blob combat where 90% of your guys stand around doing nothing. Still awful chase sequences where 300 infantrymen will be chasing and surrounding an archer for 5 minutes.
3. Still bullshit army stacks out of nothing. However, they do tend to move their armies more sensibly than in prior games though.
Overall, I'm enjoying it far more than any recent entry into the series - I just have an incredibly hard time keeping all the fucking faction and family names straight. France, Germany, Spain are easy to remember and keep track of - Wong, Dong, Shong, Mong, Long....not so much. Jesus fuckin' christ.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Apparently there's a bug at the moment where one AI faction can end up with basically every other AI faction as vassals. Quality CA design at its best.
Yeah one weird bug and the game-quality is shit. Herp derp.
Wasn't able to get into this series before, but the diplomacy and city management being nearly equal to the actual rock-paper-scissor combat makes this a really fun experience; especially for people who recall RotTK on the SNES back in the days.
This might be the first TW I could like since Medieval II. Well, the theme is interesting enough to put some effort into this one, at least
Still want to try the demo first though
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
In Total War: THREE KINGDOMS we’ve added in two different modes for the FIRST time in Total War. The Romance mode will create a more romanticised vision. The Records mode will instead follow a more historically accurate version of events.
cool, joe has to deal with the yellow tulban rebellion described in the cartoon video about china history but heh they already look bored after 20 mins and they just fooling around hehe
are child emperors in the game too ?
so they have added back the play as ai in coop, but they still didnt bring back drop in battles where strangers could asume control of ai in campaigns
I love the Three Kingdom settings and I like the game, per se, BUT it's really hard to get attached to anything in this game. There are like a hundred Warlords and Want-to-Be Emperors and Rebels and they all have like the same names lol.
And none of the cities means anything to me. I can care about Rome or Constantinople or even Marienburg or Paris etc. but the Chinese cities all look and sound the same and the map is just one big space of "stuff" that doesn't mean shit to me, lol.
It's hard to get immersed into something so alien to us "non-Chinese".
