"Marvel's Ghost-Rider" and "Marvel's Helstrom" make their way to Hulu in 2020, as Marvel Television and Hulu expand their partnership with the addition of these two new live-action series based on fear properties.
"Marvel’s Ghost Rider" centers on Robbie Reyes, played by Gabriel Luna ("Terminator: Dark Fate," "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."), the quintessential antihero, who lives on the Texas/Mexico border, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. When he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles controlling the power he wields. "Marvel’s Ghost Rider" is executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda, who will serve as showrunner, Paul Zbyszewski and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.
“I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be handed the reins to a Marvel character as beloved as GHOST RIDER. This story hits every note for me—my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the $&!# out of people! It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Ingrid Escajeda.
Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer in "Marvel’s Helstrom." The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the worst of humanity—each with their attitude and skills. "Marvel’s Helstrom" is executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski, who will serve as showrunner and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.
“As a lifelong Marvel fan, I feel incredibly fortunate to help bring this darker, thrilling corner of the comic book universe to life, and I’m just grateful to everyone at Marvel Television and Hulu for the opportunity,” said Paul Zbyszewski, Executive Producer and Showrunner. “Marvel’s known for all the heart, humor, and action they put into every series, but this time around we’re adding some scares to that mix. I think we’ve found a compelling way to dissect some of our deepest fears through the experiences of our two lead characters.”
"We're thrilled Hulu will be moving into a new—admittedly chilling—corner of the Marvel Universe with GHOST RIDER and HELSTROM. Paul and Ingrid are crafting gripping adventures into fear that live in our SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE cornerstone."
his will mark the second time that Luna has played Ghost Rider, previously appearing as the character in the ABC-Marvel series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” However, sources stress that this will be a completely new iteration of the character in no way connected to the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” storyline.
But we'll see what official sources say.

I rather of had a Johnny Blaze or Danny Ketch Ghost Rider show but I guess picking Robbie Reyes which they know they can do decent cgi for and having an already accepted actor for the part made that decision easier for them. I need to still catch up and watch season 5 of Agents of Shield so I am not sure if Ghost Rider showed up in that season but it does seem pointless to try to distance themselves from AoS as they are already doing that just by changing his location.
Not strange once you read the PR and see this is by Marvel Television.
Marvel Studios are the people behind the MCU films and will be the ones handling the Disney+ Marvel stuff. This is how they will be able to bring the cast and characters from the films to TV (e.g. Tom Hiddleston's Loki) as they are the same division that made the films. And all the Disney+ series are expected to be entirely canon.
Marvel Television are the ones handling the supposedly-canon-but-the-films-will-99%-entirely-ignore-them ABC, Hulu, Netflix, etc. series. Not surprised Ghost Rider might not even be canon to AoS, as all these series are kinda separate from each other (save for the Netflix stuff), and from the films. Marvel Television even co-produced the straight-up non-canon to MCU, Gifted and Legion. Different division, different set of people and without direct access to the MCU.
If it was a Marvel Studios production it would had been on Disney+. Since it's by Marvel Television, it doesn't belong there.

While Marvel’s Helstrom is on track, I hear Hulu and the Ghost Rider team had reached a creative impasse which could not be resolved, leading to the streamer’s decision not to move forward with the series.
Quote:
Marvel’s Ghost Rider is executive produced by Stephen Lightfoot, who was to serve as showrunner, Paul Zbyszewski and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb. It is unclear whether the series will be shopped elsewhere.

Marvel's Helstrom is a chilling supernatural thriller inspired by Marvel Comics' Son of Satan and Satana characters, premiering October 16 on Hulu.
The new series centers around Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon), the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, as they track down the worst of humanity - each with their own unique skills (and familial baggage).
In addition to Austen and Lemmon, the 10-episode first season stars Elizabeth Marvel as Daimon and Ana's mother, Victoria; Robert Wisdom as the mysterious Caretaker; Ariana Guerra as Gabriella Rosetti; June Carryl as Dr. Louise Hastings; and Alain Uy as Chris Yen. The series was created for television and executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski along with Karim Zreik and Jeph Loeb, and is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios, which is part of Disney Television Studios.
Wow, Helstrom was smashed to pieces by many critics. Personally I really liked it and don't get the criticism it got. Bleak/dull color palette = bleak/dark mood and atmosphere perfectly fitting the story etc.. The only thing I'd agree on would be some pacing issues.
Again, I never read the comics so I had no preconceptions or comparisons to make when I watched it. One of the things I really liked about it is that for an occult/supernatural show with religion involved, there was no "holy spirit" or the classic "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost..."-crap that worked or had any kind of effect. If anything the show portrayed catholicism/christianity as impotent or even absent/non-existent and as an atheist I appreciated that.
Another thing I liked was that even though it's a Marvel production, I didn't spot a single Marvel'ish thing in the show. It felt like a standalone series that had nothing to do with Marvel, no superheroes or anything like that, just dark entities and a nihilistic bias.
So yeah, I finished watching the season and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it seems like there won't be a second season. Apparently Marvel Television shut down (hence the cancellation of Ghost Rider) after finishing this season. Marvel downplayed the connection between the show and Marvel (after all, it was basically inspired by the comic, not a tv-version of it and thus lacks Marvel-elements).
Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. It did end on a cliffhanger which will most likely never see a continuation.
As for the critics, let's compare Rotten Tomatoes critics score vs audience score:
Critics: 39%
Audience: 91%
On IMDB the score is 6.7/10 and most negative reviews with 1/10 are complaining about how it's not following the source material. I get that but judging a show on that criteria while giving it 1/10 is kind of ridiculous.
I'm 3 episodes in and so far it pretty good.
Constantine meets The Exorcist (The TV Show, that was very dark).
Yeah, those titles were exactly what I was thinking when I watched it (not the shitty movie with the worst casting choice ever with Keanu "whoa" Reeves as Constantine with only Peter Stormare and Tilda Swinton being pretty good).
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
