I'd like to play it...but I would prefer a game somewhat in the middle between Total War Rome 2 and this in regard to complexity.
When Rome 2 was too linear and lacking in options/complexity, this one has too much of it for my taste...
I love that setting though... :/

Just watch one of the pre-release letsplays, that will tell you if you'd like it or not. The general concensus seems that the early game is busy and exciting, but the mid and late game are both severely lacking.

The learning curve for PDX games is blown out of proportion. The last time you really had to work to understand the games was Victoria 2 and Hearts of Iron 3 over a decade ago. Since Crusader Kings 2 the games are casual friendly. They are easy to play and somewhat difficult to master, but options/complexity shouldn't be viewed as a problem. The learning curve is 5 to 10 hours tops for understanding the main mechanics.

It makes sense. This game will shine later with scenarios similar to the 769 start date of CK2. Like Alexander's conquests, Rome Social War, Rome Civil War, etc.

To be honest, even though I have 1k+ hours in paradoxes grand strategy titles, the UI in this is confusing. I tried to pick this up yesterday evening but gave up after 10 minutes. Will check the tutorial today.

The UI really is a bit daft. The menu icons are not really descriptive (instead of people doing stuff, they should have just used pictures of tools and symbols, like a sword for military, a cogs for tech, etc), and the notifications now blend into the top bar instead of being visibly separate and noticeable (in old titles they had a sense of urgency, I felt like I HAD to deal with them right away, here I barely bother to even look up there). All the usual Paradox bells and whistles are there, just not presented in the usual clear manner. A bright white GUI in front of a brightly lit game map does not make noticing important things easy either.
I know, the setting kinda requires this marble-look, but there has to be a way to make things pop more.

The map is gorgeous, but I feel there's too much going on. I have to see if you can disable some of the icons. Also I had to scale the UI down. On first launch I could barely see the screen from those big, clumped icons.

This really needed to play more like CK2 I think, especially how important family names were in the Roman Republic.

The Total War series is waaay too complex for games that lean to the casual side (like myself). I'm just too lazy to spend a week or two learning even the basic strategies necessary to progress.
This game, Imperator, looks more like a strategy game with a slight wink to the basic mechanics of Risk, just richer and more complex. It's more my type of game.

That's funny - I feel the exact opposite.
Total War always felt accessible, whereas most Paradox games always seemed like spreadsheet menu simulators that'd be more at home in Excel.
Might give this one a shot though.

Ok, I played for about 10 hours and I'm dropping it for the time being. Typical modern paradox game, but more bland than I expected. Wait another 2-3 years for the rest of the game to drop in the form of overpriced dlcs, if they deem it profitable enough. Otherwise they might HOI4 it and move on to other projects. Currently it's not worth yarring it.

Yeah, I think I have to agree. I played last night for a short bit as Rome, @Hard & Ironman and ok, I only played the first couple years, I already conquered half the Italian Peninsula. Everybody loves me, everybody wants to trade with me, they want to be my allies etc.
It has no "missions" or "goals" or anything to strive for really.
Just "conquer shit risk style".
It's typical Paradox "Our games are only 30 bucks... but the complete game will cost you like 200 lol."
Shame, really.
Gonna continue a bit to see if it opens up a bit more, but I am more than sceptical.

I'm gonna try this game myself this weekend, but conquering the Italian peninsula seems to me the easiest and initial part of the game (a bit like Rome: Total War).
Conquering Gaul or Britain might be a bit harder
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

It's just "spend currency X to resolve/cause Y"
Want war? Fabricate Casus Belli by spending 100 X and you get to war immediately.
Are people unhappy? Spend currency Y to make them happy again.
Etc. Etc.
It feels like one of those browser games, where you just wait for a resource to increase to a point, that you have enough to spend it on some action "that does it all" lol.
PS: Steam reviews says it all I guess. It's currently at 47% lol

The biggest problem is all nations feel the same. All the different gameplay systems they implemented should be awesome in theory, but are too shallow to sustain interest. It feels the same playing Rome, Sparta, barbarian tribes, etc. It feels like they've decided to add a feature from every other successful PDX title in recent years, but only the bare minimum, so they can milk it through dlc in the future. If you play vanilla EU4 and CK2 they are still good games, limited compared to the pimped out dlc product, but good on their own. This game is average at best in it's vanilla state. It's like a PDX published game and not developed by their studio.

As a massive PDS loyalist, I have to sadly agree with you sin317 and bronson.
Its (all at the same time) a simpler shallower version of EUIV, a barebones CKII, and a prototype of Vic 2, and it feels less than the sum of its parts.
This is a misfire from PDS, They tried to do too much. Please give us Vic3, CK3 next, and drill down into what makes those games unique, don't muddy the waters by trying to be everything for everyone.
I'm not too disappointed, I adore CKII, and EU4 and even Stellaris has been a massive improvement over the beginning, and they are all being supported So kudos fo PDS for that as those three Id take to a desert island and be happy with.
P.s.
All this being said, Ill happily and optimistically try this again in two years and the game will have found its voice I bet, but until then im out.

Fuck, this makes me really sad. Thanks for the heads up though, I won't buy for a good while and then I'll use some Cream to soothe the DLC. Cheers

For a paradox release, it's okaish.
The game is stable, there arn't a lot of gamebreaking bugs.
Content will come with the time.
A fun game to pirate, a shame buying isn't an option cause of the dlc driven buisness model.

While I agree it's all very barebones, I did start to enjoy it after a little while and you can easily see this will be a great game after a few DLCs.
Playing just the tutorial, after getting through the initial boost of money and other currencies they give you, I noticed that the need to improve relations with the different parties started to grow and I just couldn't go to war as easily as before unless going full dictator. It seems armies and fleets can't be temporarily disbanded, so they always cost, making it also not so easy to make a profit.
Unfortunately, the options currently available are very few and simple. And it really needs a dynasty expansion.

Was playing this for a good while yesterday... and what is there just isn't enough to keep me going.
Didn't have that with the other games. It could turn out better with DLC, but just the fact that it needs that makes me go: Nope, no cash from me for that.

From what everyone is saying this sounds exactly like Sengoku. Remember that one?
What a shame.
I used to be all over paradox grand strategy in HoI2&3 times but these days, they just take years and years of DLC to become "finished" but then there's so much DLC that if you wanna get the "full" game it costs a fucking fortune unless you wait several more years for it all to become a normal priced complete edition.
It was EU4 that pushed me over the edge I think. I bought like 2 or 3 DLCs for that and since then I'm just out. Can't take it anymore. Now the game is almost 6 years old and I'm still waiting on that complete edition to actually start playing it. lol 6 YEARS WTF
