Yeah, it was about time, the story was going in circles. I'm pretty bitter that the author had no actual plan for the story's endgame though, it just kept going in cycles with similar beginnings and endings, but it never got bigger than the point it reached early on.
Meeeeh.

Yea, at this point it was either to actually progress the story (zombies origin's) or to end it... Kirkman realised this and choosed the latter I guess.
Rick died but his son survived and made family of his own.
There is no "cure" for the zombified virus but it seems they managed to signify dilute the numbers of the zombies and society is slowly building itself back.
AMC assured “The Walking Dead” fans that the show will carry on “for many years to come,” despite comic book series creator Robert Kirkman announcing he would conclude the book’s run this week with a surprise ending in issue #193.
People are speculating with the comic's end that they could still use it as the basis for season 10 and 11 since a lot of the seasons are based on the comic arcs as it was mentioned the show would be around issue 150 now and the Rick Grimes movies arc is around issue 169 or so. I do commend Kirkman for not milking the end of the book as it pretty much came out of no where with no fanfare basically till a few days before it came out. Most other companies would have been hyping that sort of thing up for months especially on such a long running book. The only thing that I really do not believe is his reason for ending it as he made it sound like he wanted to allow the show freedom to go in its own directions without people constantly comparing it to the book which it could have done anyways.
Personally I have not watched it in a really long time as I think I stopped around season 3 but if the show does have an end point then I might actually watch it as long as I can binge watch it on Netflix at that point.
A Negan movie might be among the next steps, taking the franchise to the past to tell the origin story of the villain who is currently on a path toward redemption.
Started watching again I'm on S8 now. This is a show which really benefits from LONG breaks (almost 2 years for me).. actually i'm a bit hyped to see S9 (which i've heard is better and one of the better seasons as of late).
