- it requires way more rendering power
- it makes the headset far bigger and wider
- and worst of all: instead of using a higher resolution for a sharper image, you sacrifice it for a wider view.
Seriously, the sharpness of the image is currently still the biggest draw back of VR headsets - why would you waste resolution to have a wider view when a lot more people complain the image isn't as sharp as they'd like? I find a lot of games are hamstrung because text is often difficult to read - fuck FOV compared to that.
I'd chose better FOV over resolution, any day of the week.. It's just not immersive as it is currently (i've only tried Rift CV1 and i also have PS4 VR). Both horizontal and vertical FOV is important to not get a feeling you're looking though binoculars (like current gen). Rendering power i have and will purchase more if i need it.
Anyways, Primax has all the way up to 8K.. and yes that will get very expensive, obviously.
It happens so much right now, i think i'm gonna wait another year before i purchase VR for PC again.
Resolution is important, but eh, i still sometimes play in stereoscopic 3D in 720p (60") and it looks awesome, can really make my jaw drop sometimes. DLP does seem to handle 720P like nothing else though..

Depends on - with eye tracking the rendering power will be reduced
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.
You can have as much fov as You want but if You can't read shit, then it's useless

Primax seems best.. really great FOV, way better resolution... i'd never buy vive or rift considering the awful FOV they have, they also don't seem to care the least about it since the new ones are equally terrible.
what kind of FOV is on the Valve one, are the specs out?
LOL, in which universe is this true? You clearly haven't spend any time with these HMD's

Pimax is definitely the best by far right now.
Having said that there is still a lot of room for improvement.
Have fun rendering star citizen in 8k twice at 90fps for your Pimax.
clearly not happening, but you have the option of rendering any game at 1080p. 1080p headsets don't have the option of rendering anything at 8k, even if your computer was capable. So yeah bag on a headset for offering more options and more resolution if your PC can handle it while remaining usable with a lower resolution. Makes about as much sense as thinking Star Citizen will ever render at 90fps on anything
Resolution is king, but I don't think you know enough to understand why.
lol great argument kid.
Monitors, projectors, VR and TV's has been a main interest since 30 years back, i've used enough VR sets, TV/monitors and projectors to know what resolution is.
And no it's not wrong that for some games resolution will be very important (when there's text, when there are things in the distance that are important - e.g racing etc). For the games i usually play it's not super important.
it certainly is king for a screen being magnified with lenses sitting 2mm from your eyeballs.
I feel this release by valve coupled with whatever software projects they have cooking here is a potential goodbye oculus/corner the VR market product.. to me this is a make/break moment for VR.. they need an experience so great here people will shell out anything to have it.
Feel a higher quality Onward experience with shithot fidelity + the interactivity knuckles could bring could be it.
"screen being magnified with lenses sitting 2mm from your eyeballs. "
You know it does not exactly work like this right? Even Though the screen is 1cm away from Your eyeballs, the lenses make Your eyes focus on "infinity", so a shortsighted person like me suffers greatly because my vision is reduced as much as I would look on something very far in real life.
Also - if this thing is equipped in fpga modules, then it is going to be expensive

I've been dusting off my Vive (I had to put away because my "play" area was temporarily too small) and it seems in the past half year, very few new games have appeared. The most fun I had, was playing PokerStars in VR which I played for many hours - it feels remarkably organic.
I wish they'd go for more traditional games where they used VR as something extra. For example, imagine a god game like Civilization but sitting down and watching over the land, being able to pick up and drop units by hand, really being an actual god looking from above. Or a space strategy game where you're really in space and can see massive planets up close. There's so much potential for wow-factor and we mostly get indie-style games with a gimmick that gets old in a few hours instead.
PokerStars actually made a good move - take something existing and improve it with VR. Seeing your opponents move, look around, play with their chips, spawn silly toys ( you can spawn guns, lighters, pets, etc.) is quite fun.
I don't think that will translate all that well, the best things about VR shooters is how you can aim with somewhat realistic accuracy.. borderlands Is kinda spongy fake shooter. I guess travelling the world and getting a size of the scale is pretty fun, id say you would get better value with skyrim or fo4 for that.
Grabbed myself a Quest Much better than all that tethered shit, and I can lie in my bed and have a decent wank now, providing the wife is still snoring
Borderlands 2 VR coming soon, it will be THE killer VR app guise!
It's not out for PC? Been out since last year for console. Been thinking about grabbing it, they've actually listened to the complaints they've gotten for the VR version and improved upon it.. i was surprised when i took a brief look at their official forum, devs that actually cares to reply to the users.

Fuck Oculus. Hardware wise the Quest is amazing but Oculus are ruining it by sticking to their rigidly closed platform. It would be perfectly possible to connect to Steam through the Steam Link technology but they're actively stopping any dev from doing that. IF it had Steam Link support, it would be an instant buy for me but they lost a sale because of their greedy bullshit. Oculus is the Epic of digital stores.

I agree.
They have treated the Dev of Virtual Desktop like shit, but he still makes it happen by including the 'removed' (at the request of Oculus) VR Streaming module on his site, which one has to sideload separately, also included to install on SideQuest, which he also said will continue to be shared and updated on there, and works a charm, so fuck you Oculus!
If that's true I may still buy one. I know they don't make much off the device itself so I wouldn't feel like I was supporting them. I love my Vive but the wires and satellite are a hassle and being able to use it downstairs when I have friends over would be great.
Boneworks is the one of the few VR games that's trying some interesting things.
Watched two of their videos and so many things make me go: this is a prototype for a VR Half Life . Bloody headcrabs! As someone that hasn't cared about VR so far this looked really cool and made me care a little.
