So I finished watching this and while there are a couple of laughs throughout the movie it just feels very adolescent (and made for adolescents). I don't dig the visual style (comic book raster, chromatic abhorrence, claymation style fps on characters but not on everything else and so on). |
I give it 1/10...because I had to shut it off about 20 minutes thru..That bad. Felt like I was watching a kids cartoon. I swear, these reviews on IMDB must be paid off cause this movie is not what Stan Lee would produce. Also, I felt like I was watching a 3D movie but no glasses. What is with the colors? Was it my version that was bad? Or just add another element to this movie that made it more of a POS...

The Kid Who Would Be King - 6/10
My daughter wanted me to take her to see this at the cinema, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have bothered. I expected a 5/10 at best but it wasn’t too bad and I was rather entertained.
May the NFOrce be with you always.

1. It IS a kids cartoon mostly.
2. That ugly distorted color effect is called chromatic aberration. It's supposed to simulate how different wavelengths of light travels through a lens. I never understood the point of this effect since it basically means you're watching the whole thing through a lens as opposed to with your eyes. Add to that the mere fact that chromatic aberration is a flaw that is easily fixed with using a compound lens. It basically makes colors blurry and out of sync.

Nope, I'm referring to the effect known specifically as chromatic aberration, not the # of character animations and it's tricks vs the movies fps. Chromatic aberration is used occasionally (like the other dozen of styles they're blending in there) and since I don't have it on my PC I can't be bothered to find an example of it. It basically separates the colors and then smears them, esp. at corners and edges of the screen. It's one of the effects most people disable when they're present in games. It looks somewhat similar to the effect of old anaglyphic 3D movies (where you use "3D" glasses with blue and red lenses to send different images to the eyes).
I guess some people really liked the mish-mash of styles used in the rendering of this movie. I found it mainly distracting and annoying.

Ready Player One 5/10
It's a solid action romp but it trying to target my field of interest actually made the movie feel worse to me than to a casual gamer. It tries waaaay too hard to appeal to "nerds". "Look, there's Robocop! Iron Giant! Chief from Halo! The DeLorean from BTTF!". At one moment in the movie, the kid says to the evil CEO "you just pretend to be one of us" (paraphrasing here) - that's how this entire MOVIE felt to me, Hollywood, after decades of mocking gamers going "Here, a movie to satisfy your nerdy interests!"
There's also several elements that stood out in a negative way:
- Samantha being a hot chick ... yeah realistic my ass. "Oh no she as a birthmark!" *facepalms*
- an Easter egg is hidden content you only stumble upon by accident, it's NOT something you announce with a giant score board.
- the whole cyber world thing makes absolutely zero sense in how it links to the real world. You see half a dozen different variations which are so wildly different it makes no sense. People in the street with a pair of glasses can fight so why the fuck use complex gear with wires in a van or the treadmills and so on?
- The premise that you lose everything if you get killed is highly unrealistic. Some games try it as a side mode but that's it - it doesn't work with regular games and certainly not cross-games.
Basically, my suspension of belief was tested a bit too much for my taste.

Aquaman was fun to watch, like having 10L of Coke with added sugar.
Spider-Man - Into the Spiderverse 7/10
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Green Book - 9/10
It sure was a surprise and nothing like I had expected. Thumbs up
EDIT: increased score from 8.5 to 9 (I'm always hesitant to give high scores) since this movie is simply awesome. I even had a tear or two at the end and I haven't had tears since I was a kid (well, when it's cold or windy my eyes really "cry" by themselves).

Life of the party (2018) 2/10
Melissa McCarthy was being her usual slef and the move wasn't even remotely funny.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) 6/10
Not as good one as the first... lacked some heart but that is to be expected with sequels.
Also why do they keep adding Maya Rudoplh to everything these days(or so it feels), Will Ferrell had some screen presence in the first one as the "bad guy", but Maya is just annoying in my book.

Aquamenz So fucking stupid and bad/10
It did give me a few laughs thanks to out of place music choices, cringy romanticy feelies and seeing someone getting crushed by stone blocks running away like it was nothing.
It's really sad that with that kind of mythology and budget they can't make something better.

Green Book - 8,5/10
That was excellent. Amusing and charming, yet thought-provoking and with bittersweet vibes, it's a window on America's racism in the 60s seen through the eyes of two memorable and completely different (...or not ) characters. Both Mahershala Ali and Viggo are simply phenomenal here, but that's not a surprise.
If I had to be nitpicky I'd say the parts that are spoken in Italian and their pronunciation felt..pretty awkward (almost incomprehensible xD), though it's just a minor detail that didn't hamper my enjoyment and Viggo's absolutely on-point mannerisms made up for everything. A return to form from Hollyboo after the last couple of flabby winrars. Eyes on the road, Tony!

Derpaman 4/10
Pretty boring and it was a 5/10, but some of the horrible music and komedy earned it a -1!
